SanDisk ships first ever multicard readers with style
Okay, so maybe you've seen a multicard reader or two in your day that wasn't unsightly to the nth degree, but it's a rarity, let us tell you. Furthermore, SanDisk's latest bunch are amongst the first we've seen that we'd actually feel somewhat proud to have sitting on our desks, and considering that there's only so much added functionality you can give these things, aiming for high fashion was probably a good move. The new line of ImageMate readers are currently shipping out to retailers in North America, with the All-In-One reader listing at $29.99 and the Multi-Card reader selling for $10 less.

Pretty cool, but pricey.
And, according to the picture, wireless.
I'd rather stick with my UDMA/SDHC enabled Lexar Brand USB and Firewire800 Readers, it's one of the fastest on the market.
According to the article, it's USB based.
“The new SanDisk ImageMate readers are two of the fastest and most reliable USB readers, capable of transferring 1-gigabyte3 of data in less than 35 seconds,” said Jennifer Lee, senior product marketing manager, SanDisk. “The ImageMate readers’ space-saving vertical design makes them unobtrusive on your desk, but with such stylish looks they can’t help but stand out.”
"Each card slot features a blue LED light, which indicates data transfer activity. Supported formats include SD™, SDHC, miniSDHC™, microSDHC™, MMC, Memory Stick®, Memory Stick Pro Duo™, xD and CompactFlash, among others. Suggested retail price is $29.99."
What's included in the All-in-one?
haha you know... sometimes its the simple jokes that make me laugh the hardest. Well done.
A buddy of mine got one last week. Pretty smooth piece of equip...the detachable magnetic feet are a pretty cool feature.
I bought one of these about a month ago, at Circuit City of all places...
It is quite awesome...and the USB cable doesn't ruin the look...
However, I never liked magnets near my computer stuff. Maybe I am old school. (No matter how weak the magnet is...)

@BigDaddyM
If you don't like magnets near you computer you must hate Hard Drives & Speakers :)
I've had it for a month too, i just placed it underneath the monitor (w/o the stand) and it's practically invisible. The magnet came came apart, and i glued it with Krazy glue, but finally decided to leave it horizontally.
Just add the USB cable and the "style" will be lost.
ARRRR
I don't see why it is stylish to put recangular devices on theirs side and tilt them like it is some sort of antenna. The Nintendo Wii started this, then Asus started building PC's and now it's suddenly stylish to do it with card readers as well so that you can put an entire array of antenna-like devices on your desk and play domino with them.
Agreed; I'd have mine sat upright on its own. Even without the stand, it still looks great.
the girls like it up
:)
Being at an angle make it easier to insert your memory cards (or cds in the Wiis case). I have an older sandisk card reader that's arranged in the same way, looking good is secondary to function in this case.
finally something to get more out of the Exreme III and IV but still not a full utilization of the speed.
^ it is all about playing with design emotions
well, those look amazing. :D
I got the All-in-one for Christmas and I love it. These are way better than the previous version size wise. I had to stop using the stand because sometimes I'm forceful with the memory cards and the magnet isn't strong enough to hold when I push them in. Overall highly recommended. I'm even looking to get a second one for wifey.
I'll stick with the one I've got taped under my desk with double sided tape so it's out of site & mind but right their for when I need it.
I took the liberty of reading that as out of context, so that I could laugh.
stylish? pulease. The box is still ugly. The only thing stylish about it is the the stand. Would it have hurt them to style the black box a bit? They did nothing to it except a bit of grey paint.
The grey/black combo is supposed to look "striking"... like a tuxedo, or a grand piano.
The question is how much more black could this be? And the answer is... none. None more black.
I'll stick with my built in card reader in my 3.5" bay, no need to worry about pushing the thing over when inserting cards and less wires to manage.
One of these was present when apes first learned to use bones as tools.
Wow. Those "legs" are horrible.
Sorry, no Firewire 800, then they're worthless for serious work with my 1Ds Mark II, 16.7 megapixel, and 5D Mark II, 21 megapixel files.
When will SanDisk and Lexar get a clue? Looks AND functionality will sell big numbers. Looks alone make it like Dell and others who think design is skin deep.
The question we're all asking now is...
Will it blend?
Whats the difference between the two models?
One has separate slots including MicroSD and CompactFlash... the other has a multislot for just SD, Memory Stick and their variants.
this reader is actually the only way to get the full 30MB/sec out of the new extreme iii sdhc. i got one and it is FAST!
Finally.
It's a cross between the 2001 monolith and a wii!
Maybe it's just me, but when I have to use a card reader I could really give a krup if it has high style. As long as it does its job is pretty much all I care about. A $10 multi-card reader is no worse than any of these high style units.
Combine sentry turret! I feel compelled to knock it down with a crowbar
i was in the market for one of these until i found a usb drive in our kitchen junk drawer and as it turns out its actually a card reader. its exactly the size of a usb drive and is super portable. i throw it in my dslr bag and away i go. this is sexy however. might not be a bad impulse buy if the price is right ;)
most beautiful of all time
These have been available in store for a while now. Engadget... running low on content?
If you need a reader, I could see someone buying one of these. The price difference is worth it IMO because it looks good and its still not much money really.
But I dont see many people who already have a solution looking at this and thinking gee whiz this sure looks tight I think Im gonna buy it
"... ships with style" , what’s so stylish about shipping with UPS?
I picked up the all in 1 about 2 months ago. The magnet holding the stand and the unit is pretty weak. A couple times the device fell over with the both magnets still attached to the base, revealing the sticky tape used to hold the 1 magnet on the device. Not very easy to use standing up, it wants to fall over. It looks nice tho and saves space on my desk.
I think is good. I love the design... but It will be better wireless!!
i would have had that aluminum portion go up the spine further than the length of the one on the feet, but not up to the top
