Nokia 1600 survives week in fish's belly, still makes smelly calls
First off, it's rather amazing that someone in a developed nation is still using the Nokia 1600 as their primary handset. Secondly, it's even more astounding that said handset lasted a week in the belly of a cod and could still make calls after it was rescued. In a just-barely-believable story hosted up at The Sun, a businessman was both shocked and confused when his presumably sunk cellphone began ringing his lady friend around five days after he dropped it at sea. As the tale goes, a 25 pound cod managed to swallow the thing, and a pair of fishermen discovered it upon gutting their catch. The best part? The bloke who it was returned to is still using it, despite the fact that it literally reeks of rotten fish. Who knows -- maybe he suffers from ichthyomania.

I smell masochism, which conveniently smells like rotten fish.
...something is fishy here....
Oh Cod that was lame.
I'm a geek and I still prefer the Nokia bricks. They go for weeks on end (literally) without needing a charge, never break and have great reception.
Not everybody in the world is a gadget nerd Engadget. Some people use their cell-phones for just calling people!
I tried the HTC Diamond, Sony X1 and I still prefer using a old Samsung cellular phone that's 4 years old. You're right not everyone like new technology, only what fits.
my mom uses a Nokia 1600. I have an iPhone 3G so it evens out :D
I agree. I came upon this article not ten minutes after receiving a Fed Ex package with a NOKIA 1600 phone from NET 10. I need a phone to make phone calls, period. And its so much more affordable than many of the phones pimped by sites like Engadget.
^
Poor kid's mom can't even afford a new phone because of the iPhone's plan. Way to be considerate.
Yeah, I use a Nokia 1600. It would definitely be fun to have one of the many new, feature-packed phones, but I don't use my phone enough to justify paying $40-70 a month plus whatever the cost of the phone might be; my Net10 plan costs $15 a month AND is prepaid, and that's hard to beat.
Agreed. My mom uses a cell phone that's at least 10 years old. It only functions as a phone, but can it make calls? Yes, better than the iphone.
Was the handset NOM-Certified? This story would make sense if it was. Most consumer gadgets are NOM-Certified... Just check on the back.
ha that fish saying nom nom nom really brightened up my day.
Very interesting story, but the mere fact that the usage of this phone in some countries astounds you (americans), speaks very bad for you. Sorry!
My mother has the same phone and it's not like the country i live in is an underdeveloped country :(
this is just lame.
some people actually DO use their phones for what they are supposed to do - making calls.
I totally disagree. I have a cell phone and what it's supposed to do is email and web browsing. Making calls is a bonus feature, if it disappeared I really wouldn't miss it that much.
Or, to put it another way, if making calls was all that phones could do, I wouldn't own one.
Would my rank have stood a better chance if I took the time to point out that my phone ISN'T an iPhone?
@chefgon_ign
No.
I never, ever thought engadget would link to The Sun online lol
I wonder why the fish ate it.
umm...cuz it has a picture of a fish on it, duhhhh...
that phone always has been a tank!
A little bit pompous and arrogant of Engadget to assume that folk 'developed' are all Palm pre or IPhone users. Most of us do use phones for calling and texting, simple as. Most Brits and other Europens still use the Nokia 6310i. Widely used in Asia too. Losing respect for this site.
I just googled the Nokia 6310i. Losing respect for Europe and Asia.
I just Yahooed "Google". Losing respect for myself.
Im pretty sure people in the UK are more concerned about having the newest/stylish phones compared to US. Just something i noticed after being to both places.
Ahhh the 6310i... I love that phone to death. Used to go on for a week without a charge, and I was a teen so a lot of yapping being done. Why can't they make another phone like that?
6310i
Never had it, but it was one awesome phone.
So someone, in the present economic climate, is using a cheap and cheerful phone to make telephone conversations and send the odd text message. Why spend over the odds on an iphone or blackberry when he doesn't need one?
My main phone (W200i) doesn't even have bluetooth, but when i lost my last phone (a nokia 6500 side, admitted not in a cod) i wasn't going to fork out for an expensive when a cheap and cheerful £20 does exactly what i want.
The Sun... Not a tabloid to be trusted...
If it makes it better for you, it was also in a couple of the broadsheets as well
Great - more paper for wrapping fish and chips.
Doesn't your boss give you proper chip paper?
Dammit, Sam. Epic pwn there, you win. :p
Chip wrappings is too good for the sun...
at least it has boobs
Maybe his lady wife likes to take advantage of the vibrate function.
It would explain why he may not have noticed the smell.
no. just.... no
But NOTHING could of saved it from the fashion police....
I call bullshit. Sorry.. when someone loses their phone, they tend to call their carrier pretty quickly and it gets shut off.
That is definitely not true. I know many people who have lost their phones and not until this day have they got it shut off.
I waited a week cause I thought I lost it in my house
with the lost phone being in the sea I'm sure the owner wasn't concerned that anyone would find it and use it. Hence the lack of urgency to get the service stopped.
I still use a Nokia 1100 for my primary cell and it works like a charm for what I need to do. Make calls, send messages and set an alarm.
oh yea, these NOKIA's are built like a tank, even my little 5310, i dropped quite a few times and still works great, a couple dings in it but no complaints, had a old 6010 that I dropped so many times off of ladders like 10 or 15 feet onto concrete and the damn thing always worked.
No no silly, Fish go IN the tank.
Not the other way around.
Yep the old ones are so heavy-duty I saw some of them being used during lovers quarrels as "flying weapons." They might not look good but they do sure survive a lot better than the new ones.
"An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Nokia. For just as Nokia was in the belly of the huge fish for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights."
Further evidence that cell phones are harmful to your health. Just look what happend to the fish that ate one.
