RIP Palm OS
We knew ye so well
I agree; PalmOS set the old standard, and perhaps webOS will set the new one. Here's to good years.
@Gojulas webOS already seems to be forcing Apple to step up their game. If it's the only thing it does, it still is a success.
@Adduc I agree. Palm's webOS looks to be the most exciting phone OS I've seen in a very long time (which includes Android and WinMo 6.5 *yawn*).
I wouldn't call Android yawn yet. I'm curious to see what Google can learn from Palm, as it had been the pioneer in Smartphone and PDA operating systems.
I love how at 0:19 one of the guys there says "Can you even spot your own device?"
Then either himself or another guy says "I can't aswell"
HeHe If I threw my Clie nv70 in there I Wouldn't either.
The sad part is that the iPhone still can't do the simple tasks that the Palm OS handled routinely over a decade ago. There's still no way to sync third-party application data during syncs. There are still no to-do lists, let alone lists with categories. There are still no memos with categories. Recipes? Meeting notes? Creative ideas? Yep, they're all jumbled together on the iPhone.
The introduction of the iPhone would've been a great time for Apple to finally address the lack of an Outlook-like PIM on the Mac, by building those functions into an iPhone management app. Instead, they did a half-assed job of shoehorning iPhone functions into... a music-player app.
Apple's not the only offender, just the most profound. Palm OS devices typically had 8 MB, which is dwarfed by just about any phone on the market. Regular phones, not the so-called "smart phones." And yet all of these PIM functions are still missing from most of them. How many phones don't even store ADDRESSES in their contact lists? It's ridiculous.
Hopefully Palm is a little wiser and retained all of the PIM capabilities of their PDAs.
Where's the Sony CLIE UX50! It's like the most netbookish Palm OS PDA. Its laptop-like look made me get it :).
It's the greyish-white device on the right...

ohh wait let me thow my treo 700p in there
one of the best phone i have had
R.I.P
Wow, so many iterations of FAIL! in one picture
AHAHAHAH!
Ah you know im just razzin y'all!
Get the hell out of here. Can't you see that EVERYONE hates you? How does it feel to have every person hate you? Just. Leave. Engadget. Your comments are a waste of bytes, pixels, and internet.
You know, pimply-faced 13 y/o basement dwellers want attention too...
Pff that's rich coming from you Lando, you dirty traitor.
Sometimes people just cross the line with Lando. You never cross the line with Lando.
Jesus hates you too.
So this is what internet hell looks like ...
Will Josh be there?
Still better than anything else on the market.
I still have my Lifedrive somewhere...
FML
i loved my Life Drive...
until the Harddrive failed :(
That is sadly ironic. You can always replace the hard drive with a CF card if you need to.
I have two...there really quite nice.
Once you spend the time to get Java and Opera on there its pretty decent for the web.
And video playback is fantastic with with TCPMP. It makes a real nice 4.1" PMP.
That's nothing. I started my whole portable devices deal with the m100 in grade 6 or 7 I think..
http://the-gadgeteer.com/2000/08/27/palm_m100_review/
I remember I hacked a song onto it, one song was all I could fit, and I played it through the ipod-clickwheel-click grade speaker. It sounded terrible but I was just proud I figured out how to do it :P
Then I got my HP iPaq and it changed everything.. colour screen, Windows Mobile, it was like going from a Yugo to a Ferrari.
Oh I think I'm gonna cry... I miss Palm OS already...!
Ah Palm...multitasking, copying, pasting, recording video clips, sending picture mail....long before the iPhone was a twinkle in a trend-whore's eye...
Palm made my first few smartphones in the early-to-mid 2000's and I'm glad to see them (finally) moving into the modern day. The relatively short time between being at the top of the game and needing a comeback shows just how new some of these new devices are that some people take for granted.
No UX-40/50???
No way!! That was the best iteration of a Palm OS PDA.
Otherwise, nice. I loved POS
RIP. I had a first-gen USRobotics 'pilot 1000' (before they called it the PalmPilot, and name was in all lower-case). Note that the picture in the Wikipedia "Pilot 1000" article is actually a newer version. Mine had the aftermarket memory upgrade, I think an additional 128MB or 512MB? to bring it up to "pilot 5000" specs for less money.
I also owned a Palm V after that. Never did own one of their phones though.
I owned a palm V as well. Battery crapped out a couple years ago along with the memory, but it was a great little device while it lasted.
But where's my old Sony Clie in there?
::sadface::
Adieu Palm OS.....the closest thing to my own computer my parents would buy me in 8th grade.
All good things must come to an end!!
:(
Good bye, Palm OS
We will never forget your glory days
As a [former] user of Palm products, I'm shedding a nostalgic tear. As a [former] tech-support / phone droid for Palm, I say "Good riddance!"
Though to be fair, it was the hardware that gave us most of our headaches, not the OS.
I love seeing real gadget enthusiasts. Awesome.
2 words: Tapwave. Zodiac.
mannn I miss the old days, damnit
Sony Clie TH55
It was the top and the end for me.
It's better to burn out
than it is to rust
Hey hey
my my
I use to have one of those really old basic ones, they were awesome. Then I got a life drive (ironically died after a year).
Getting my Palm Pre the day it comes out.
I got involved with the geeky hobby of geocaching a couple of years ago. I use my old Palm III XE to hold information about each location loaded on the Garmin GPS. I hadn't used the Palm in about 5 years. Tossed in a couple of AAAs and it started right up. I still remembered how to write most of the characters. I had to buy a USB/serial cable adaptor to sync the Palm to the PC because when was the last time a PC came with a serial port?
I miss my old Handspring Visor.... a camera module, a gps module, and a phone module.... hard to believe it would've turned 10 this year...
I still have my venerable Sony Clie that I got... dang, nearly 7 years ago? Doesn't seem like it's been that long. It's outlasted 2 computers, a cell phone, and 2 iPods.
Make that 3 cell phones.
That's true , my NX73 it's still one of the best PDA devices I ever have. It took a lot for other PDA's or smartphones to reach that quality and utility, the Palm OS was not my favorite thought ( neither the mobile windows OS) but in a Clié it really shined
Nx70v I had. Was a Legend with its swivel screen, camera and keyboard.
A different time and it could've all panned out differently.
Salutations old friend.
[How much is this thing worth? It's going for a bit on some sites it seems]
What is that one in the bottom left with the game controller? Wicked.
That was an add-on for the Sony Clie systems if your on about that one. Didn't work many games tho and brings back memories of tucows, cnet and Handango trying shareware games and such.
The amount of bewjewled and Pipe frenzy games i played on POS. DAYM.
Sim City 2000 on palm os... ever so sweet.
I have that game controller, and the QWERTY keyboard, and the mp3 player snap-on for my old Clie SJ20. The sad thing was that the game controller didn't work with all that many games. Otherwise it was pretty amazing for its time.
Ahh, Palm OS, what a beut' you were in your day. An open platform and multitasking long before your day. You served me well on my old Treo, may you rest in peace.
palm os ,was killed on 062907 when a revolution occurred. Good riddance!!bring on the hate mail,
Tombstone reads. "death by iPhone "
Tombstone reads "death by WebOS"
I would take my old Treo 650 over an iPhone any day.
Oh the days of universal ir remote apps are over :(
I loved my old pda
And what are the watch type devices i see there?
