Pre deets continue to trickle out; Office 2007 support in the mix
Still no word on pricing or a release date, but the kind chappie running Inside Sprint Now has posted up a little Pre FAQ to tide us over. If you're inclined to believe this information indeed comes from deep within Sprint customer service -- and we've no reason to not to -- you'll find some interesting factoids in the mix, including full support for Office 2007, ringback tones, and custom ringtones. There's also a promise of video recording support and wireless PictBridge printing sometime down the line. Great, great -- but we'd really rather learn all this stuff on our own after release, you know?

Why cant they just give us all of the info already?
Let me introduce you to the concept of vaporware...
Because as much as it's driving gadget geeks nuts, there is a lot that goes into these sorts of things. The way you market and position a device like this can make or break it. As well, they need to make sure everything is working well before selling because they will be competing against 2 (soon to be 3) generations of iPhone, a slew of Blackberrys, upcoming Android devices and countless Windows Mobile phones. They just can't afford any negative press so they need to do everything right.
I'm also very much looking forward to this phone. If it lives up to the hype, it will be my first Palm since the Treo 650 and my girlfriend's first smartphone. Still, I would rather have it come out fully polished and in such a manner as to assure future sales and support.
I beg your pardon greg : are you calling the Pre a vaporware ? lol I've seen allot of Apple fanboys , mostly on engadget but you're in my top 3 easy !
Forget the info. How about introducing these damn Pres to the public for crissakes. It's Pre this and Pre that. This has to be the most elusive handset since the Meizu M8. Enough with the cheesy hype of WebOS. Lets see a real Pre so the hype can disappear in a day or two. If Apple announces an iPad a week or a month later, the Pre will be all but forgotten when both Palm and Sprint file for bankruptcy.
Who the heck is going to wait in line for a Pre besides Ed Colligan or some nerdy Palm fanboy eager to relive his glory days of having the first Palm PDA on the block. So far this product is stunning vaporware.
@iphonerulez
And so far you're just a brainwashed fanboy.
Pre=vaporware
Assumptions are fun to make aren't they?
Vaporware >_> as if other companies don't over promise and under deliver...
For all of you apple fanboys saying that this is vaporware...
Remember the release of the iphone?
announced on January 9, 2007
released on June 29, 2007
Pre
announced on January 8, 2009
so they've still got time
I am 110% sure The Pre is coming out in June. You heard it here first.
So start saving up your pennies people :)
@Sk8rman
iPhone release date and pricing announced: January
Pre release date announced: ???
@ greg
does it smell good up there in steve jobs's ass?
Don't even compare the pre to the iphone. there is no comparison. The iphone is and will always be the best phone ever
@ Félix and Sk8rman - neither Greg nor TheSuburbanWhiteBoy mentioned Apple or any Apple product, so why would you call them Apple fanboys?
Has the "Apple fanboy" hysteria reached the point where you are seeing this "threat" when it is not there? (Further reading: witch hysteria, alien hysteria, communist hysteria)
And it is interesting, isn't it? Others always accuse the "fanboys" of being the ones to mention Apple on unrelated articles, but *you guys* were the ones here to mention Apple on an unrelated article. Or do you take the hypocritical position that it is okay to mention Apple on an unrelated article IF you're anti-Apple but not okay if you're pro-Apple?
Apparently now just being anti-Pre in some way automatically makes you pro-Apple ... how did you figure that one out? Are you saying that the Pre and the iPhone are the only two smartphones out there? You do realise that a person could be pro-Symbian or pro-WinMo whilst being both anti-iPhone and anti-Pre, yeah?
You guys have become so convinced that there is a huge number of so-called "Apple fanboys" out there, that anyone you do not agree with, is automatically labelled as being an Apple fanboy, regardless of whether they've stated a position on Apple or not.
Grow up, guys, and remember that the smartphone market is about more than just the Pre and the iPhone. There are others!
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
You are wrong. The only smartphone that matters is the IPHONE
iPhone push notifications---
announced: June 2008
announced again: January 2009
released: ?????
able to listen to pandora while writing a reply to a blog post like you will be able to do on the Pre and on any other real smartphone: huh? why would you every want something like that? you know it drains the battery, right?? all you need are little numbers on your icons!!
The greater the weight you apply to a liquid, the higher its pressure.
The greater the hype and buzz you apply to a product, the higher its sales.
Physics is marketing.
The pre will also have video recording !!! http://search.twitter.com/search?q=Palm+Pre
Its so sad how you guys fall for this troll bait, each and every time.
but, does anyone really care ?
no one cares... this phone is dead before hit is officially released
I do.
I do.
How cute.
The Apple fan kids feeling the heat, trying to attack the Pre before launch.
Did you clowns think that people don't sense what you are doing?
Oooooooh, no one cares!!!
Ooooooh it's just vaporware!!
Oooooh it's already dead!!!
Really? Is that the best you've got from HQ?
Basically anyone who wants a smartphone with a nice screen, modern hardware, proper QWERTY, proper multitasking, Exchange/Gmail/Facebook integration and cheap rates is interested. Progress in the mobile arena is constant and anyone halfway interested in gadgets and personal tech at all ought to be interested in a major new offering. I can't think of a single device out now that offers all of the things I listed above. Some come close but I haven't found one that does all.
I do, and I probably won't even get it.
Yeah I do, I don't think I'll get one either but I would still like to see it in action. I feel the same way about the new iPhone. I just would like to see what they do with the thing, course I don't think the firmware is going to change all that much on it. I'm still leaning towards getting a blackberry.
As an aside, why do we have to be in camps about tech? Can't we just be excited about something new when it comes along? Does it really matter all that much if it isn't carrying a particular logo? I remember when I bought APPL stock for 7.30 a share, and got a lecture from my father about wasting money in dead companies. I'm hoping this does well, so much so that I even put down some cash for PALM as well. I say good luck and I can't wait to see what the phone is like.
It must just be the true nerd in me.
Hey chilly, my crystal ball is broken, can I borrow yours?
I do, and I have no plans on buying one.
And the fanboys are all responding to this post from their cubicles in Cupertino - while they still can't really copy and paste.
i care too. gonna switch from 9 years with VZ to get this sucker. got my pennies saved
I cannot wait any longer for the Pre. I already sold my instinct last week. Please let May 17th be the date
Hate to break it to you but it's looking more and more like early June. I would expect to see the first dedicated TV ads starting within the next week or so and the release should come toward the ass-end of May but more likely the beginning of June. The 7th is the currently rumored date. You shouldn't have ditched your featurephone in favor of a smartphone that won't be out for a month.
I am using a Treo Pro. So its all good. Getting myself acclimated to the Pre's keyboard
Currently, the big money is on a June 7th release date.
The guy(s) that write for Inside Sprint Now claim that they do know the release date (as well as price), but that they are under NDA and will not spill the beans nor confirm/deny anything. So, I guess a good ol' fashioned "Hotter, Colder" game is out of the question.
Interesting that they have a graphic depicting a calendar with June 7th on it. I wonder if that makes the June 7th day *more* likely or *less* likely (since that graphic, if correct, could possibly interpreted as a violation of the NDA).
Either way, just get me this phone... now!
has anyone noticed the image of a calender with June 7th on on Inside Sprint Now site?!?!
You think it's a hint? Looks like it's one to me. Like a little easter egg.
Knowing that Sprint releases Palm phones on Sundays, and knowing that it's a _ 7, one can deduce that it's a 17th release date, not the 7th as everyone else believes. This guy knows something, I think he can't say 17, so he lets you figure it out, if you're smart enough I suppose. -snowy
it has to be June 7th. As June 7th is a Sunday and it does say June so it won't be June 17th a Wednesday. and as it says June it won't be May 17th (a Sunday).
Sprint has a history of releasing phones on sundays.
Doubly so, that the June 7th calendar page also includes a picture of the Pre.
That image is absolutely intentional and crystal clear, so if that's not the date, then they're intentionally misleading us.
17th is a Sunday too.....perhaps that is the date. Let the iPhone cool and drop the Pre on their party. It Makes sense.
MAY 17th is a Sunday.
JUNE 17 is on Wednesday
just sayin...
I want this already!
8 weeks left in "First Half of 2009"
our work is waiting for the pre - if they blow this, we're swapping to at&t and getting iphones.
I really don't like ATT and Verizon (due to anti USA Constitution position).
I really wanted to get this. But it has minimal pod casting, much worse than the no monthly fee itouch.
If your primary concern is a podcatcher, then a smartphone is overkill. This is for people who want to do a whole lot of things with one device. Anyway, with Pandora on this and the media players and apps sure to follow, I can't imagine it would be tough to set this up for podcatching. The whole point of this thing is to integrate with info on the net so it will likely do just fine. If the monthly data plan is your hangup then you should definitely stick to a PMP like the iPod Touch or some other device.
It has a freely available SDK, there will be a podcast app for it in the very near future.
Enuff with the CDMA crap, when are we going to see this GSM? Its so much better with being able to swap out SIMs, unlock and change cell phones.
