Probably-fake video roundup: 24-inch iPhone OS, PS1 emulation on the Pre
This video of iPhone OS 2.x running on a 24-inch multitouch monitor from Swedish design firm Dreamfield is almost certainly fake, but hey -- it's Sunday night, nothing's going on, and we were thinking about how well touch-specific systems would work on a larger screen after seeing those CrunchPad videos anyway, so we thought we'd get some conversation going. We'd be willing to bet that a future Apple tablet has more in common with the experience shown in this video than with what we currently think of as OS X, but we're not so certain we're seeing anything here that makes us want to throw our mouse or keyboard away -- or spend the entire day with gorilla arm. So -- artfully mocked-up glimpse of the future, or just a pipe dream?
Keeping with the likely-fake theme, there's also a probably-fake video of SNES and PS1 emulators running on the Pre, controlled by a Bluetooth gamepad. Yes, it's incredibly awesome -- and undoubtedly possible -- but until we see some evidence of how things are loaded up and connected with the gamepad we're sticking it in the fake category as well.

Ummm... the guy with the Pre put instructions for it so it's probably real.
Id say its fake, however the iPhone on the screen I do think is real, ive seen programs that allow u to emulate the iphone OS, so why wouldnt gbe able to be used with a touchscreen?
this definitely looks like he is playing a video of the gameplay and pretending to use the controller
why cant it just be the simulator in full screen? is it really that hard? i can do it myself. a touchscreen would work as well. i mean i know their is some fancy stuff in the beginning, but past that it just seems like the simulator to me.
*raises finger*
Uhhhhhhhh...
*puts finger down and walks away*
How is this even a probably fake? If anybody took the time to do a two minute google search they would realize that Dream Field is a post production video editing company. This could also be as simple as a pre recorded video from an ipod touch that he is playing along with and I know the title to this post says "Probably-fake" but seriously a 24 inch monitor from Dreamfield a video editing company?
That, and the bit where they rotate the screen and the picture spins - how does it detect said rotation? It's just a screen on a pivot - no accellerometers there
Many LCDs can detect screen rotation. I have a 19 Samsung LCD from 2003 that can do it. I rotate it and it automatically rotates my Windows desktop to fill the screen properly.
Definitely fake, especially since it's kinda hard to make a Dell 2407FPW into a touchscreen.
Not to mention having an accelerometer in a monitor. That's where it went down the crapper for me.
@Kraken: you are an idiot MOST modern flat panels have an accelerometer
to be able to change from portrait to landscape
@Kraken
I think many rotating screens let the host machine know when they've been rotated. They don't need an accelerometer per se.
And though I can't spot any extra hardware, is it that hard to add a touch surface to an LCD?
its not an accellerometer when u turn it it flips a switch so it know when to change.
Wai is right, I own 2 of that monitor and they're definitely the 2407, and they're definitely not touch screen. They do however accept Portrait mode. Excellent monitors by the way. Now working on 5 years of ownership.
hmm giant iPhone OS.
i'll take giant android OS.
no you wont
Why don't we find all the fake stuff on the internet and post it? Srsly engadget, you even admit in the title that this isn't news.
It's 1:30am on Sunday, nothing's happening -- and just because it isn't "news" doesn't mean it isn't interesting, my man.
Monday.
you are an idiot MOST modern flat panels have an accelerometer
to be able to change from portrait to landscape
as well as it could very well be emulated
Uh-oh, sounds like somebody's got a case of the Mondays.
I do have a case of the mondays, very badly in fact. I know it raises some interesting questions, but so would alot of fake tech news, wouldn't it?
Anyway, since we're on the topic, I'll post my personal favorite fake tech video, hypocritical as it may be.

:P
Dude's not even pressing buttons to make Mario speed run and/or jump. Looks like it's just a video being played back.
Someone can just download the software and see if it actually works, though. (Dear Engadget,)
That controller is pretty sleek with the Pre in it, too!
I did play PSX on my Iphone 2G but its kinda slow.
I think Pre's beefed up specs might be able to handle it
The specs will definitely handle it. PSX on Pandora hardware (also Cortex-A8) is full speed, it should run just as well on the Pre.
This video is a crock though.
So the Pre video is weird. I've seen that guys You Tube videos before and they've alway been legit. I don't believe he would fake something like this because as I've said, he's always been legit. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that he's not actually controlling the Mario game. Is he acting like he is? Is it just a video or a demo running while he's explaining how things work? I don't know. Also, the fact that he gives a link to instructions on how to get these emulators running on the Pre makes the entire thing seem even more legitimate. I think it's real.
As for the iPhone interface running on that Dell monitor...NOPE. FAKE. Running the iPhone interface on a 24 inch monitor is nothing big or anything difficult but the fact that the Dell 24 inch is touchscreen all the sudden is simply hilarious. And sense when did monitors have an accelerometer? So fake.
Palm Pre = Completely real (and fucking awesome).
iPhone on a 24" screen = Fake (and fucking boring anyway).
I need to know, the emulation part, is it fake or is it real?
reppin' the site even late at night.
Just for kicks, Mac Pros don't have infrared sensors for the remote to work...
Regarding the giant iPhone OS demo, I think the fact that the guy deliberately held up the iPod Remote is a giveaway. The IR sensor is not on the screen surely? Yes, maybe it relied on reflection, but it's still slightly over-the-top to point the remote right at the middle of the screen.
The emulation is clearly fake. The NES emulation just released is still kinda slow. I doubt the SNES would be smooth as butter much less a freakin' Playstation. I don't doubt that the Pre might have the power to run all those emulators at full speed once they've been optimized, but it's a bit TOO soon for that much optimization :p
That kid didn't wanna show you game play in Tekken cuz IT IS FAKE!!! I went and read his blog. It's garbage instructions. They're totally obscure and incoherently written. Almost thought it was one of those Viagra spam emails.
"She had beautiful hair. The cat misses eating soup. Plz 0rd3r ur v1agr4 2day."
agreed... its probably a video clip of mario during game play.
Also Both are in Landscape, Nether the Nes or PS1 played in Landscape.
Two crappy ideas for the price of one article.
The iphone one SEEMED real . . . until he flipped the monitor.
Name ONE touchscreen monitor that has the accelerometer necessary to make the iPhone's interface rotate.
is says ipod on the top left screen.
the tekken 2 intro can be skipped pressing start which the guy did continuously and it didnt happen.
I refuse to believe a guy this dumb looking/sounding can accomplish anything more than smoking pot.
i smoke pot (albeit it not regularly) and im going to medschool so pah.
the hardware-part of running iphone os (or emulating it) isn't the problem... modern lcds have a little switch to tell them in which position they are. i don't think its real because of the resolution. its all crisp and clear... that isn't what a os designed for a tiny screen would look like on that big boy.
Sadly fake, just shoot the pre with a blue photo and few tracker points and Voila! Still its quite a good job. I wonder what they used... boujou? AE or Shake? Flame?? Quite overkill though.
Of course the Pre video is fake. The "demos" start with the games already up and loaded. If it were real, the video wouldn't cut all the way into the game, it would show the loading process.
Is this any different than when Apple demos ipod/iphone at Macworld and has a unit hacked to output the screen display?
Or could just very well be the iPhone display at Apple Stores.
Looks like one of these giant iphone displays in vodafone stores lol
Isn't this just like the giant iPhones in O2 shops ?
1. A cheap screen overlay can add touch to any monitor, it plugs into a USB port.
2. Many monitors have a switch in the twist joint to tell the computer to rotate the image, I used one 8 years ago and it wasn't cutting edge then.
3. WHY IS THIS NEWS ?
i guess that emulation of the ps1 is real.
SIKE
looks like he just downloaded the intro to tekken and got it on his phone
that iphone one would be sick though
even if it is fake
The ps1 emulation is clearly fake
1) the video cuts right as it starts
2) he doesn't actually interact with it
3) this dumbass has no idea what he is talking about "look at the graphics;" he says this during a prerendered intro video
4) the pre can play movies, like this one that looks like a ps1 game
I made a parody of the Palm Pre dude:

This stuff pisses me off >_
Real or not, they we're both cool to watch.
a friend of mine believe there's an iphone stuck on the back of the monitor and the monitor responds like an iphone because it's connected to it with that black cable.. anybody think likewise?
