HTC Hero approved by Global Certification Forum, rocking GSM and HSPA
We're unfortunately light on details here, but The Unwired is reporting that HTC's Hero has been approved by the Global Certification Forum, listed here as "HERO100," with support for quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 1800/2100 MHz. With the company's touted London event just around the corner -- this Wednesday, to be exact -- we wouldn't be surprised to see the phone and its oft-rumored "Rosie" Android UI take center stage, in possibly two variations. Other than frequency bands and the associative name, the GCF isn't giving us anything else to work with, so for now just sit back and hope this uncertainty is cleared up sooner rather than later.

....just joking.
Android really kick ass! Superb!
nothing to jk about, you really were first.
a douche, but first =].
Nice, would love to see that Rosie UI.. And Oh, its got that "Jay Leno Chin" thing going on for it! Nice... ;)
The HTC Leno. You think Jay will sue?
it's made for gangsters so that when they g' their pants, the pockets are so low that the otherwise uncomofortable chin sits flush with the kneecap. :o
That Lancaster is looking way more ideal to me. I can't switch to a touchscreen phone without a keyboard. I love my G1.
for me the lancaster seems more of low end device, it has a fixed focus camera which means all the barcode scanner apps like shop savvy and compare everywhere WONT work as they rely on a camera Auto focus feature...And it only totes a 2.8" screen which is pretty small and gonna be cramped for touchscreening ( pretty much renders the portrait virtual qwerty useless) and it only has a 4 row keyboard.
I just think that the HTC hero might not be the answer to physical qwerty loving people but the G1 has better specs than the lancaster, I cant imagine AT&T really promoting android really heavy becuase they have the Iphone, they will prob just carry low end to middle end android devices and the lancaster is no doubt low end..
I hope that's not what the phone looks like.
What's wrong with it? Style over function? I see...
Personally I think it looks really nice.
Which area uses 1800MHz UMTS?
there's no such thing as 1800MHz UMTS. 1800 is 2G only.
Yet engadget sez "dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 1800/2100 MHz"
1800 actually is used for 3G in Japan. This is a pretty good resource for seeing what bands are used where:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
The UMTS 1800Mhz spectrum is Band III and it’s not that common, but it is used in Europe and Asia. If that is the case then it looks like this is a pretty specific device for a specific carrier.
Really, that's about the fugliest non-KIRF phone I've seen in a long time...blech.
I agree it looks ugly and boring.
i loath the htc leno bros
i loath the htc leno bros
i think the worst part is that the whole phone is ONE color - even the buttons. makes it look really generic.
Was not expecting comments like this, but Different strokes for different folks right.
I think this phone is sexy, although the whole leno chin thing is a turn off, I can look past it.
well its not an iphone.
SWEET JESUS GIVE ME ONE!!! ITS NOT AN IPHONE!!!
it does however resemble the dream...
Crimson chin?
Rosie UI is great. It looks really nice, but is not meant to run on the G1, at least not yet.
Gotta love android though :D
I dunno, it seems to have been optimized by the brilliant people at xda to the point where its very snappy on a G1.
What's up with the phone names? HTC always manages to come up with gay names for its phones.
Ok they could be better, but at least they have a shred of imagination. I'm looking at you, Apple.
HTC Hermes = Best phone name ever, although some of the others were not quite as good, I always laugh at the HTC Star Trek.
next thing you know HTC will come up with
HTC Gromit
HTC Gomer Pile
HTC Pythagoras
HTC Socrates
uhhhhhh...
HTC Balzac?
HTC HERO is the new game from Activison.
In here you control your very own HTC phone. Similar to guitar hero. But instead of playing songs, youre doing phone related stuff.
Prepare to get ready for alot of sms'ing, emailing, and surfing on the internet. Become a HTC HERO.
In stores whenever
US Tmobile launch? With 3g? pretty please?
not the "s" variety... thank god for that...
HTC needs new design and marketing teams. The design reminds me of the 80's in a bad way and the names of these phones are just goofy.
Exactly! It seems like HTC has taken inspiration from the old block style cell phones from the 80s and candy coated it like might have been done in the... 80s. HTC is turning out some sexy WinMo devices lately. Who the hell is in charge of the Android devices!? This is the main reason I am not considering getting an Android device.
Oh, and by the way, the Rosie UI doesn't look any more slick than SPB Mobile Shell 3 does on my Touch Dual (which is also better looking than the HERO).
goofy but better and more memorable than: N97, N85, K550i (a sony phone i owned), etc.
HTC, bring on the HTC Lincoln,HTC Napoleon, HTC Barack, HTC Einstein, HTC Jobs (dare ya!), HTC Schickelgruber(dbl. dare ya:P)
"It seems like HTC has taken inspiration from the old block style cell phones from the 80s and candy coated it like might have been done in the... 80s."
What, you think that's an accident? Dude, this is obviously their low end device targeted at preteens teens and tweens, if you pull your head out of your ass for a minute you might have noticed that 80's fashion is *huge*. Very smart move on HTC's part.
I think, HTC have a contract with Microsoft which states they have to make ugly looking phones whenever they dop not put Windows Mobile on it.
you don't mess with the chickenator
That'd look awkward in a pocket.
Yup... Superman with his X-Ray vision will be like WTF is that?!!!
damn it's ugly... ;/
If you think this is ugly, just wait to see the rest of the roadmap. The names are worse too. They look like Pontiac Aztecs.
Hero is an amazing showcase of just how much companies are able to customize android.
I for one am very excited about where htc is going with their design/software these days.
I'm running the JACHero Hero r1.72 rom on my G1 right now, and I'd havta say it's pretty spiffy.
If you can get past Haykuro's spl that everyone is afraid of right now you should give Hero a try.
....................oh wait ... is that's a comment in itself ?
I read it as, "HTC Herro"
Weird, the comments on the engadget mobile portal don't get posted here. >.>
So no news on what carriers will get this? T-mobile can suck it, I want an android phone for At&t. :x
Unnecessary T-Mobile flaming aside, AT&T is getting the Lancaster, didn't you see all the comments about it above? And the Lancaster is not going to be a good phone, no offense to them, the specs just suck. So if anyone can "suck it", AT&T can. Especially with rumors of T-Mobile picking up the iPhone as soon as next year, when AT&T exclusivity agreement is over.
Well I didn't want to have it seen as flaming, I don't have T-mobile and they're pretty much the only carrier in the US with a released android phone. Thanks for the info about the lancaster, but all the more reason I would like to have this phone available to ATT, if not a more variety of carriers.
on no ! what is it ?
