Dell's slim new Inspiron Z family is totally carb free
Dell's got a new lineup heading your way this fall, this time taking its low-cost Inspiron laptop brand to thin land. The Inspiron Z "family" isn't anything stunningly slim, and the 11.6-inch, disc drive free Z in the low end looks positively netbook-ish, but all the laptops are CULV-powered and should probably be arriving at pretty trim price points to fend off the likes of Acer's Timeline series. Hopefully we'll have more details soon (Dell sure does love to tease when it comes to CULV), but for now there are some ultra-exciting laptop stacking pics below to keep you entertained.

For Dell, that's slim.
needs to
needs to be
Give it Ion, and Dude, I'm getting a Dell
for realz!
Yeah that's what I'm holding out on. My brother wants a netbook for college, and I'm telling him to hold out until they give these things a decent GPU. Right now they can't even play Youtube HD, which isn't really even HD.
Can I buy some pot from you?
but youtube hd doesn't rely on a gpu for playback. it requires a faster processor
@Robot Overlord
Only because Flash doesn't currently support hardware acceleration. Adobe is working with NVidia and Broadcom to change that.
do want
So thats the reason for the Mini 12 being dropped.
hmm, not bad, but dell seriously, CULV? use core 2 duos...
i think you're missing the point here.
if you want power, you get a normal laptop with a core 2 duo but battery life suffers.
if you want battery life, that's where CULV comes in. the name kind of gives it away... Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage...
They make CULV Core 2 Duos...
didnt we see something like this a while ago..

looks like the intro price is going to be $499 for the base model. They better market these well, cuz lots of people won't be aware of the difference in processing power between the CULV (Core 2 Solo I'm assuming) and the Atom. Even I'm not sure of the differences (in gaming, power usage, etc) myself.
Are CULV better than Atoms? In what way?
in that they're a ton more powerful.
They're basically a C2D but have only one core and are underclocked
More horsepower at a small increase in power usage (and as a result lesser battery life).
Look like they do have 2 core, not just one core. CULV is basically just an extremely low clocked C2D with smaller cache.
Hmm, if the prices are low enough, they might be worth getting instead of netbooks.
I like it. If more manufacturers can get rid of the bloat then we're onto something. I bet if they wanted they can add a slot load DVDRW....
Cheap plastic crap. Thats a Dell all right.
My question is does anyone currently owning a Dell mini netbook like the touchpad? I went in there and tried it out on the mini 9 and it feels like crap. The left and right click buttons are a joke. I don't know if it's that my macbook trackpad spoils me or what, but it just felt unresponsive.
the touchpad on my mini 9 is fine (if kinda small, but that's to be expected on netbooks). I used my friend's Macbook often, and haven't found differences in sensitivity. In fact, I've never noticed that about any laptop i've used.
Yeah, no don't get me wrong I think these are great laptops, but for some reason when I tried click on the left and right mouse buttons it just didn't feel right. Then again, my macbook's trackpad felt a little strange at first since I was used to a traditional trackpad, and then I got used to it over time. I'm still waiting for an Dell Mini that has the Ion platform on it, then I'll pick up one of these and install Jolicloud. Until then, I can't deal with the fact that it wont run Youtube HD. Or HD video in general.
I worked on a Mini 9 for someone here at school and I couldn't use the touchpad. It was atrocious. Thankfully tap-to-click worked well enough that I could rely on that (I usually disable that on my personal laptops). I was really in love with the netbook too, but the trackpad was just horrid. Hopefully Dell has improved it a bit since I would love to get one of their netbooks (or one of these Z series).
Looks like a Mini on steroids.
Now all they need to do is refresh the Studio XPS 13 and i'm buying.
The Studio XPS 13 is pretty much a brand new model.
the Studio XPS line has been refreshed recently. hence the ddr3 ram and newer graphics cards on the 16 model
He's not talking about 16" model, he specifically said 13". And by the way, they all had DDR3 memory from the start, so I'm not sure what you are talking about.
why could they not give it firmly rectangular edges like they gave the latitude Z?
What a waste of money on Dell's part. Carbon is natural; climate change is normal.
unless you're being sarcastic, the 'carb' in the post refers to carbohydrates (as in food, not carbon emissions). then again, your avatar is for a band containing 2/3rds of Creed.
Yes I suppose it was sarcastic in that I did actually realize the writers meant carbohydrates, rather than carbon.
Bare minimum graphics for a notebook should be able to run WOW these days.
I see Dell's been doing a lot of copying lately. They have the new Mac Mini clone out and now here's a laptop with a buttonless touchpad. Rather than saying "if you can't beat them, join them," I think I can get away with saying "if you can't bring any innovation, copy other's innovation and then merge it into cheap plastic crap so people will know it's still a Dell."
Wow, just wow!
Dell doesn't know to how to make a cool looking PC so the best thing Dell can do is to paint their laptop. Even then Dell doesn't seem to know how to pick a cool color to paint! :)
There are more than one type of CULV Intel processors. I know the Timeline series has the SU2700 and SU3500 (Both single core) and then the SU9400 (Dual core) at 1.4 GHz which is what my Timeline has.
If the one of the laptops in the Z series has the option for a Core 2 Duo SU9600, then I'm sold. I was thinking about holding out 'til the refresh Inspiron 13 came to the States, but I think the Inspiron 13 might be part of the Z series. I've seen an HDMI port on one of the models, and the refreshed Inspiron 13 lacks an optical drive.
Simple but awesome design, PgUp\PgDn\Home\End on the directional keys, the screen was fits well and doesn't need that ugly big border.
Now when are the official specs coming out? CULV 1.2 or 1.4GHz or Atom N280 sounds great, just NO CELERON please! ION would definitely make this laptop a must have for a lot of users, but for some reason the companies are taking their sweet time to adopt it and slap it on their products so better not get our hopes up.
Now this laptop is not that thin, think we can at least hope for the SSD(for the OS)+HDD(to save our random crap) option?
I like it. If more manufacturers can get rid of the bloat then we're onto something. I bet if they wanted they can add a slot load DVDRW....
optical media = dead, please stop asking for it
anyone want to guess at the screen sizes here ?
"11.6-inch" is the screen size.
will it feature a nividia ion cg ?
