AOC's 2436Vw does 24-inches of power sipping LCD on the cheap
It's nothing too astonishing in the specs department (300 nits, 60,000:1 contrast, 5ms response time), and the DVI and VGA plugs are rather lonesome without an HDMI or DisplayPort plug to tag along, but we can't fault AOC for the 2436Vw's $220 pricetag. The 49W of power draw in a 24-inch 1080p display doesn't hurt either, and we're sort of digging the clean design. The 2436Vw is out now.

Well I just bought the Samsung 4294HM 24" yesterday at Costco for $200 with cupon. It has similar specs but has an HDMI port and it is name brand.
From Wikipedia: "The cupon was the temporary currency of Moldova between 1992 and 1993. It replaced the Soviet ruble at par and was replaced by the leu at a rate of 1 leu = 1000 cupon. Notes issued included 50, 200, 1000, and 5000 cupon. No coins were issued."
To be honest I'm surprised Costco even accepted this...
Wow, I don't know 24" LCDs were getting so cheap. I'm almost tempted to upgrade from my 22"
Did it come with any USB ports? Are there speakers? This would be nice as a traveling monitor for something like an Xbox 360 or PS3.
Your Samsung isn't LED backlit
My new Sammy does have speakers but no USB ports. The AOC does not have LED backlighting either.
D.J.
The have an awesome 22" monitor for gaming, the V22. AWESOME visual specs, decent speakers.
FIRST. OH BURN
Fail, oh burn
ahhhhhhh
Keep this "On the Cheap" thing up, Engadget. Its actual helpful news for me.
oh cool another 24" 1080p tn panel lcd that uses the same panel that every other 24" tn panel lcd uses
exciting stuff guys keep it up!!
mmm yeah you know how i like it bb
1920x1080 is for TV's, not PC monitors!!!!
And it's a good thing, too. I am considering getting this along with a PS3 Slim for Blu-Ray and games.
Yeah I still like 4:3 monitors. They are much better for reading web pages and long documents.
And how is this a con?
I think it's an advantage to have the same resolution on both... Or at least the same aspect ratio (with the PC having a higher resolution)
As someone who works with lots of on-screen meters (and never with text documents) I love widescreen. 4:3 was a pain in the rear.
The whole idea of the aspect ratio is that you could have two documents (like in Word) side to side.
my 40-inch TV makes a beautiful monitor!
The link they actually intended to put in this bit:

TN-Panels are for cardboard-people.
does anybody actually care about how much power their LCD uses?
Yeah, the people who actually have to pay their energy bills.
interesting, i never checked the power consumption when i was buying LCDs so far. i just assumed all of them must consume roughly the same amount of power
In partial defence of AOC, we supply a 22" AOC LCD panel as part of a turnkey system we offer. AOC do manufacturer their own LCD panels, which are stunning, hence one of their monitors won a top award from PC World. The colors are very rich and the response is not to shabby for video or gaming. The negatives are that the casing and OSD (On Screen Display) is not as robust as those from some of the other players, such as LG and Samsung. From what I understand, AOC manufacture LCD panels for many other vendors too, a little like Sharp. And the company has been around a while too. If AOC can do as the Japanese and Korean companies have done, and sort out their product casing and human factors quality, then they may be able to take on the larger players.
Power sipping? At 49 Watts on a 24" monitor?
Do you guys just copy and paste press releases?
For comparison - the plain jane fluorescent backlit Dell 2408WFP consumes 57 watts when operating at full brightness. Dell's truly power sipping model, the LED backlit G2410 uses only 14 watts - which is almost 1/4 the consumption of what you claim to be a 'power sipping' LCD.
AND, I really like mine. 24" Dell LED backlit LCD. Superb EXCEPT for the color range. I do find for some reason it lacks some color 'punch' and I haven't been able to adjust it enough to match the vibrance of the old 19" Samsung LCD next to it. Otherwise, can't beat 19w, and it makes FAR less heat output in my home office than the old 24" gateway beastly LCD I had. Gorgeous picture, but I always felt like I was getting a tan too.
Wonderkid is dead right. I did a great deal of research two years ago before buying a 37" TV branded "Envision by AOC". They do manufacturer their own panels and the panels for many other LCD marketers. The screen had been great... the remote codes... damn impossible to match. On screen menus are fine as are the speakers.A ton of useful inputs and outputs, 2 HDMI included.
this is what i have been telling people all along aoc is awesome, i bout a 19 inch envision display in 2005 for 300 bucks! ive left it on for days with no screensaver i havent even had a glimmer of a burned in image and 5 years later it is still one of the fastest, clearest displays i have ever feasted my eyes on. The only fault i have with it is a viewing angle issue because it only tilts back at 45 degrees and not forward at all (so if my eyes are below its logo it looks darker). Even with that annoyance it is still better than any veiwsonic, dell, acer or nec display ive had since 2003. i will never buy a monitor or tv (vizio rocks too) that costs more than 400 bucks ever again!
Why would anyone need an HDMI input for a monitor without speakers?
