Sony's PSP Go available t-t-t-today junior!
It may not do UMDs, but it does fun, and it does it well. Just in case you've forgotten -- after all, it's not like anything really happened in September to mess with your memory -- today's the day to find Sony's PSP Go on store shelves. $249.99, you, your local retailer and some fancy digital content -- it's a date. Isn't it?

Maybe I've been under a rock, but I didn't realize this came in white. Looks really good in white.
Agreed. The white does look much better than the black IMO
al sharpton's ears just twitched
Sweet, a white one to gather dust next to my white DS
@ Cannon fodder
stop trolling on the first comment, its a thread about white PSPGos. And the 3000 will not be discontinued, there is even a rumored 4000 model coming next-year. Your UMDs are safe. You can still play them.
well... i got it. yes. thats right. i got it. haterz can say wut they want, ima ride till i die, bitchez!!!
erhem, um.. well... its sitting right in front of me at my cube. its white (for thread continuity -__-') and awfully small... jesus. what used to be larger than my dsi is now smaller than it. thats freaky. havent taken it out the plastic yet but will be doing so as soon as i hit "add comment" XD
Not sure why Engadget is supporting the Go so much. Giving the shaft to people who got the original PSP (aka the target market) isn't the best way to go about things, and there have been a lot of technological advancements since the original PSP came out. Portable browsers that can render original web pages perfectly (and don't run out of memory in the process, I might add), full games that people can play on their phones (through download, even), 802.11n becoming standard (seriously, why is this thing still running on 802.11b?!).
When I bought the first PSP back in high school, I was so excited about it. I had dreams about this device changing the way I did things. I remember thinking about being able to be on the internet anywhere, browsing the web in bed or outside on the deck. I recall buying a racing game (and I don't even like racing games) just for the stellar graphics on that oh-so-beautiful screen.
Then, slowly, I remember wondering, "gee, when are good games going start coming out for this?" Lumines is great for the first week or so, but I was wondering when the 3d shooters and RPGs were going to come out. Then I started wondering "when are UMD movies going to come bundled with DVDs? It seems like a waste to pay for a movie twice." Needless to say, none of these things happened. The PSP has yet to produce a killer game (maybe Grand Theft Auto comes the closest), and UMD movies failed miserably. The Nintendo DS in it's original form, the most unsexy block of plastic i've ever seen, was kicking PSP's well-polished ass left and right. I remember reading review after review of games that "would have been good, except for the 30 minute load times every 5 minutes."
The only thing that I've used my PSP for since is homebrew, which, given the needless drama in the community (if you've kept up with it at all, basically it's a bunch of assholes who hack eachother's code, release code with viruses, cry on their blogs about "quitting the homebrew scene", which i guess is the nerd way of quitting your livejournal, only to come back later because these kids have nothing better to do) is kind of a lost cause.
I mention all of this because the PSP Go is literally the SAME EXACT THING AS THE ORIGINAL PSP, only without a UMD slot and with built in storage. How ridiculous! We've come so far in the four years that the PSP has been around, yet Sony's reluctance to do anything revolutionary is horrifyingly apparent. Why is the XMB still around? With "PSP Minis," which I'm assuming people are going to have a lot of, is a 1D scrolling interface the best solution? Why does Sony insist on "patching" their archaic software to accommodate the changing market?
Obviously I'm bitter about the $250 I threw down the drain four years ago, but I would hope that Sony at least learned their lesson. It's bothersome that they're rehashing to make a few bucks.
@ John
Come on man, don't reply to the first comment just cause you want you post to be near the top. You're replying to a post about it coming in white, which by the way looks pretty cool.
Go=MacBook Air of PSPs.
Sony is afraid to advertise white anymore, after the last time...
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/06/sony-under-fire-for-racist-advertising/
why not add phone functionality to this?
Dude, white looks pretty rad.
@John, you are a douche for replying to the first post about the color just so your post can be near the top. This thread is about it coming in white, which looks awesome. You my good sir, have been down voted.
Why not just make the ultimate device and add a touch screen phone to this and GPS + camera. now 'THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!!'....
@John:
tl;dr
PASS!
No pass, only fail.
You pass the go?
Collect $200.
*CATCHES*
Unfortunately, passing Go still wont net you enough for a PSP Go.
Also, Monopoly money isn't real currency. :-(
Haha. Its more of a "save $250" than a "collect $200".
Exactly what I did last night when I picked up my PSP 3000 bundle with Rock Band for $199.
If you imported it from the UK, it would cost you a bargain price of $357........... Cheers Sony for supporting the EU once again....
P.O.S.
I wasn't aware that it was delusion day.
yea I'm going to pass on this, PSP Go costs more than the Wii, lol and I'm not into the whole downloading games thing, I'd rather get a PSP 2000 or 3000
Yeah, really. Get an iPod touch if you want lots of downloadable and no physical media, or an older PSP model if you're looking for something with physical media. This thing costs way too much for what it is, lower it to $200 and maybe...
Why do we even care about physical media when every company are finally moving on to digital download?
For us, we have been playing downlodables since PSP came out. Memory stick games for long time!
But my current firmware is still 5.00 m33-6.
I just wonder will there be any custom firmware for PSP now?
The iphone is the death of all of these portable game machines. I fell sorry for the saps who have to buy a phone AND a separate gaming device.
Fanboy much?
if youre into gimped buttonless gaming
well he does use Phanboi's avatar
@Sewer: Same rule applies to both trolls and fanboys; DONT FEED THEM! ;-)
BTW, the iPhone is NOT the ultimate portable gaming device. Since it relies only on touch screen and motion. When you need real buttons, touch screens are worthless. You don't get a decent tactile feedback on a touch screen.
Oh, and good luck making or receiving calls, sms and emails when you battery runs out from you gaming session.
@Matt: Yeah...but sometimes I can't resist =]
I have an iphone AND a PSP (3000). Best of both worlds. PSP is a way better gaming machine not just because of the buttons. Graphics are better, crashing on complex scenes is non-existent, audio is great, saves my iphone battery for viewing movies on a plane when my PSP dies... Playing poker on iphone is fine, but playing a racing game or tiger woods or something is much better on PSP.
Also, I was going to wait for this to come out but replaced my PSP-1000 with a PSP-3000 a few weeks ago (not as much of an upgrade as I'd thought but it was new and good battery)... I'm much more happy I did that since I already have a UMD collection and would prefer to keep it that way. After all, most games I play come rented from B!ockbuster. I don't see any rental potential for the Go.
Lol you are stupid.
Not that i would even buy a PMP nowadays (most phones do the same thing) but if i had to choose: PSP-GO, it is clearly superior; a much better choice.
The iphone has a camera, ergo not a brilliant gaming device.
@macjonny
You fell sorry? Please explain... Actually don't because you might fall again.
Maybe I misunderstood but I believe he is trying to say that the Nokia NGage is a must buy.
OVERPRICED
I also share the opinion that the Go is overpriced.
If you compare it to the former PSP, there aren'ny real incitive despite the new shape and size to go with the GO. If you compare the price to full fledge home consoles, the GO is also too expensive. I mean you can get a Wii or an Xbox360 Arcade for cheaper than that. For 50$ more, you can a full fledge PS3 or Xbox 360 Elite.
Well, if you guys are interested in about a 40 dollar discount go to dell.com and use this coupon: 6FWJ247J1P44CK
It takes 15% off, its still kind of expensive, but if you really want it you might as well get it at a discounted price.
If you want to get it for 200, keep a watch on www.slickdeals.net for deals on the pspgo. Realistically I think this should have been 200 at the most to begin with (ideally 150) but if you look around, you can get it for cheaper.
Making fun of a little boy for trying to read, are you insane?
I'm sorry, I can't hear you. I'm deaf.
No milk will EVER be our milk!
FAIL! I was tempted to preorder one when I heard that Sony would be offering a program to get a digital copy of all my PSP games and that all upcoming PSP games would be released on digital and UMD as well. When I heard that program went belly up, so did the idea of me preordering this system.
I already have a PSP I plan on keeping (for games), and I already have an iPhone (for Phone), and a Zune HD (for music). Yet I'm still strangely drawn to this. I might wait for a slight price drop or a new color, since I dont NEED need it right away.
Kid you bought everything: iPhone, Zune and a PSP, What the fuck?
What is this, i don't even.
Just a gadget lover, I suppose. I love my old PSP for games. iPhone is a good phone with some fun apps. Horrible for games though, and a crappy music player. Loved my old 1st gen Zune, so upgraded to the HD a couple weeks ago, and that's my primary music player.
Looks like a waste of money..
Countdown to CFW:

...
...and yet no one cares.
you care enough to mention that no one cares. Troll fail.
@ willxcore
There is simply no reason to buy one other then size/form factor that many have criticized. I have two PSPs and feel absolutely no need to 'upgrade' to this thing. I'm not compelled.
This will be Sony's worst selling console to date. Just wait and see.
Also, no, not 'troll fail', it's Sony not knowing what their customers want FAIL.
If it had a touchscreen and accelerometer to go along with its hardware controls, it would be a good DS alternative for gamers, and a decent competitor for the iPod Touch, IMO. A touch screen might justify the price a bit better, unless they increase the price even more. As for the analog nub, they don't even have to add another one, just switch its position with the start/select buttons. You can just use the D-pad to move forward/backward and strafe.
I never saw so much reluctance on a Sony branded gaming device. Its absolutely well deserved. This system is an absolute waste of money and an insult to customers, It's a cynic attempt to get more money out from customers offering much less... I think the best deal for this device will be offering it for less than 50 bucks including a proper game trade in program.
Who gives a f-f-f-fuck!?
so ummmm yea... gimmie a 64GB version for the same price as this and I'll jump on it
the psp 1000 was superior in build quality to the psp slim(flimsy motherfucker but that screen is awesome). And this pspgo is nowhere near the build quality of the 1000. So I'm getting less product for more money. This is like buying a salt free ketchup, they don't spend the money putting in salt but they charge more for it than the one with salt.
Ergo, less product, more cash.
SONY KISS MY ASS!!!!!!
Early adopters unite
No Big Deal. I saw this at my local Meijer on monday.
Cannon Fodder is right on with this one. It's the whole reason I won't switch and I think a year from now Sony won't be selling it. If I can't go to Gamestop and trade my game in for ANYTHING then it's a waste to me.
I don't understand why retailers would bother to sell such a device. The retailers will make nothing on games since you have to download them elsewhere.
too much money. coulda made it a phone, that woulda been cool. i woulda got it, too.
/facepalm
Nokia N-gage 4tw!
No dual analog = FAIL! PASS!
I would only buy this if I could use it to play my games remotly on my PS3 through Wifi. Otherwise, I see no point to owning this.
If this sold for $99 and had Sony implemented a way to transfer UMDs I would get this in a heartbeat. As is it is something I will never own. I haven't touched my PSP-1000 is about a year.
Pass,
Just add an analog stick stick, some extra shoulder buttons and the ability to play ps3 games, yes ps3 games via remoteplay and i'm sold!
Predicted News Report:
Nov 1st- Sony sell only 1,000 PSP-Go's in the first month.
Jan 1st 2010- Sony pulls the PSP-Go- The little customers that bought these are pist.
Jan1st to Dec 30th- Still Sony making bad decisions. Surprised? Nope.
so this is only $50 less than a ps3? loll
Good luck using your PS3 on the train.
Harrison, for the commuting everybody already has a DS.
Well I was hoping I could get one for my birthday tomorrow. Then I found out how to contact companies to get products to review on my gadget blog. And so far I don't have anything for tomorrow...
I wonder how Sony's sales will go though?
Stef,
the 12 soon to be 13 gadget blogger @LaptopMemo
This new PSP is great value for the customer!
/sarcasm
Also add a great value(*) for retailer
(*) not monetary.
PERFECTLY SAID "ZEN" PASS GO! COLLECT $250! LOL the $250 You'll still have in your checking account for not getting this rip off of product! Sony amazes me on how cocky the guys are! don't they know people here in the U.S much smarter than Japanese Brain Washed Idiots! $250 LOL Just another way of keeping their PSP 3000 at a ridicolous price of $169.00 and not having to drop the price since the PSP GO makes the 3000 look like a bargain! LOL NICE TRY SONY but we are much smarter than YOU THINK I PRAY NO ONE BUY's THis Ridicolous Piece of Crap so that they are forced to make it $149.00 Before the Holidays!
WOW! You've not only added random capitalization, but not-very-subtle racism as well as misspellings! Congratulations! You just failed hard.
Now that the PS3 Laptop is officially here? No thanks!
Really!?! I'm the only one to comment on the awesome "t-t-t-today junior!" headline? I tip my hat to engadget
Wonderful. a Billy Madison reference
the price is too high. :(
Billy Madison WIN!
+1 for the Billy Madison reference.
Just brought two....Perfect for what I need it to do ...Play Games....my 3GS is a phone with apps..nothing more :)
In all honesty, id get a PSP 3000 instead. 50 bucks cheaper and i can get games on the cheap instead of being restricted to the prices on the online store.
Got one and its awesome. Flat out awesome.
I'd have to agree with John. I've always liked playstation products. And when the psp initially came out, I thought this was going to be the all-in-one device that I was searching for. Finally, I had a device that I can surf the internet with, play ps2-quality games, watch movies, use as my gps, and possibly do video conferencing. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out that way. Surfing was frustrating at best, could not initially use my own videos (and had to buy UMD movies on a machine without video out capabilities), good games were released to far in between, and the GPS and camera were never released. Of course they've since fixed some of these limitations, but it was a little too late. Had Sony actually listened to what people wanted, they could've had an awesome all-in-one device. But I guess hindsight is 20/20 and maybe they were a little too overambitious with the PSP. After all, it was difficult to release an all-in-one handheld product 4-5 years ago and keep it somewhat affordable. Still, Sony could've avoided a lot of crap had they listened to their target audience in the first place.
No second analog stick, no touch screen, no accelerometer, no camera, no SD support, no phone, lousy ergonomics, no UMD support, NO THANKS!!!
I'll pass. This should be way more advanced than it is, like touch screen.
Personally speaking, as someone who has an iPod touch and a PSP. I play my psp way more than my iPod. Gaming needs buttons, just saying!!
I think the Go is a miserable flop although an amazing attempt to try something new.
Sony should have introduced a hybrid system. I understand they want to shrink the size but come on guys, give us the option of playing our old games or ATLEAST a conversion program. The consumer has the power in the end; I hope this doesn't play out like the exorbitant price tags of the PS3 hurting sales numbers and concurrently developer support.
Also just another add in, the apps I buy on my ipod touch rarely exceed 3 dollars and for the ones that have, I never play them enough to justify the pricing!
oh and an interesting note, apart from a capactive touch screen I think the iPod touch 16gb and PSP 16gb are fairly matched (all size discretions aside) and the PSP is a tad bit cheaper for the same capacity.
"Gaming needs buttons,"
Nah, you can use your mind now.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/video-mattel-mind-flex-hands-and-heads-on/
Now only find a way to make this work in a video game.
PSP Going on ebay because i dont want it for myself.
JUST GOT IT!
$250 is pretty steep...but got it for $213 (with CA tax, even) from Dell with a coupon and Bing cashback. I can stomach that a bit better. We'll see if I like it tomorrow when it gets here...
I just bought the PSP Go Pearl White version in Best Buy during lunch time with two ladies and one guy from Sony. They took a picture of me and a Best Buy employee, "Cheers". I guess I was the 1st or second one to purchase the PSP Go today, so that's why they took a picture.
Price is steep but I have all PSP versions from 1st generation and PSP Slim 2000. PSP Go has Bluetooth which is cool but WiFi 802.11b may be the reason that causes slow software download via WiFi.
Nice! Great Goodfellas reference (Title)
