Sony's PSP Go available t-t-t-today junior!
It may not do UMDs, but it does fun, and it does it well. Just in case you've forgotten -- after all, it's not like anything really happened in September to mess with your memory -- today's the day to find Sony's PSP Go on store shelves. $249.99, you, your local retailer and some fancy digital content -- it's a date. Isn't it?

Maybe I've been under a rock, but I didn't realize this came in white. Looks really good in white.
Agreed. The white does look much better than the black IMO
al sharpton's ears just twitched
Sweet, a white one to gather dust next to my white DS
@ Cannon fodder
stop trolling on the first comment, its a thread about white PSPGos. And the 3000 will not be discontinued, there is even a rumored 4000 model coming next-year. Your UMDs are safe. You can still play them.
well... i got it. yes. thats right. i got it. haterz can say wut they want, ima ride till i die, bitchez!!!
erhem, um.. well... its sitting right in front of me at my cube. its white (for thread continuity -__-') and awfully small... jesus. what used to be larger than my dsi is now smaller than it. thats freaky. havent taken it out the plastic yet but will be doing so as soon as i hit "add comment" XD
Not sure why Engadget is supporting the Go so much. Giving the shaft to people who got the original PSP (aka the target market) isn't the best way to go about things, and there have been a lot of technological advancements since the original PSP came out. Portable browsers that can render original web pages perfectly (and don't run out of memory in the process, I might add), full games that people can play on their phones (through download, even), 802.11n becoming standard (seriously, why is this thing still running on 802.11b?!).
When I bought the first PSP back in high school, I was so excited about it. I had dreams about this device changing the way I did things. I remember thinking about being able to be on the internet anywhere, browsing the web in bed or outside on the deck. I recall buying a racing game (and I don't even like racing games) just for the stellar graphics on that oh-so-beautiful screen.
Then, slowly, I remember wondering, "gee, when are good games going start coming out for this?" Lumines is great for the first week or so, but I was wondering when the 3d shooters and RPGs were going to come out. Then I started wondering "when are UMD movies going to come bundled with DVDs? It seems like a waste to pay for a movie twice." Needless to say, none of these things happened. The PSP has yet to produce a killer game (maybe Grand Theft Auto comes the closest), and UMD movies failed miserably. The Nintendo DS in it's original form, the most unsexy block of plastic i've ever seen, was kicking PSP's well-polished ass left and right. I remember reading review after review of games that "would have been good, except for the 30 minute load times every 5 minutes."
The only thing that I've used my PSP for since is homebrew, which, given the needless drama in the community (if you've kept up with it at all, basically it's a bunch of assholes who hack eachother's code, release code with viruses, cry on their blogs about "quitting the homebrew scene", which i guess is the nerd way of quitting your livejournal, only to come back later because these kids have nothing better to do) is kind of a lost cause.
I mention all of this because the PSP Go is literally the SAME EXACT THING AS THE ORIGINAL PSP, only without a UMD slot and with built in storage. How ridiculous! We've come so far in the four years that the PSP has been around, yet Sony's reluctance to do anything revolutionary is horrifyingly apparent. Why is the XMB still around? With "PSP Minis," which I'm assuming people are going to have a lot of, is a 1D scrolling interface the best solution? Why does Sony insist on "patching" their archaic software to accommodate the changing market?
Obviously I'm bitter about the $250 I threw down the drain four years ago, but I would hope that Sony at least learned their lesson. It's bothersome that they're rehashing to make a few bucks.
@ John
Come on man, don't reply to the first comment just cause you want you post to be near the top. You're replying to a post about it coming in white, which by the way looks pretty cool.
Go=MacBook Air of PSPs.
Sony is afraid to advertise white anymore, after the last time...
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/06/sony-under-fire-for-racist-advertising/
why not add phone functionality to this?
Dude, white looks pretty rad.
@John, you are a douche for replying to the first post about the color just so your post can be near the top. This thread is about it coming in white, which looks awesome. You my good sir, have been down voted.
Why not just make the ultimate device and add a touch screen phone to this and GPS + camera. now 'THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!!'....
@John:
tl;dr
PASS!
No pass, only fail.
You pass the go?
Collect $200.
*CATCHES*
Unfortunately, passing Go still wont net you enough for a PSP Go.
Also, Monopoly money isn't real currency. :-(
Haha. Its more of a "save $250" than a "collect $200".
Exactly what I did last night when I picked up my PSP 3000 bundle with Rock Band for $199.
If you imported it from the UK, it would cost you a bargain price of $357........... Cheers Sony for supporting the EU once again....
P.O.S.
I wasn't aware that it was delusion day.
yea I'm going to pass on this, PSP Go costs more than the Wii, lol and I'm not into the whole downloading games thing, I'd rather get a PSP 2000 or 3000
Yeah, really. Get an iPod touch if you want lots of downloadable and no physical media, or an older PSP model if you're looking for something with physical media. This thing costs way too much for what it is, lower it to $200 and maybe...
Why do we even care about physical media when every company are finally moving on to digital download?
For us, we have been playing downlodables since PSP came out. Memory stick games for long time!
But my current firmware is still 5.00 m33-6.
I just wonder will there be any custom firmware for PSP now?
The iphone is the death of all of these portable game machines. I fell sorry for the saps who have to buy a phone AND a separate gaming device.
Fanboy much?
if youre into gimped buttonless gaming
well he does use Phanboi's avatar
@Sewer: Same rule applies to both trolls and fanboys; DONT FEED THEM! ;-)
BTW, the iPhone is NOT the ultimate portable gaming device. Since it relies only on touch screen and motion. When you need real buttons, touch screens are worthless. You don't get a decent tactile feedback on a touch screen.
Oh, and good luck making or receiving calls, sms and emails when you battery runs out from you gaming session.
@Matt: Yeah...but sometimes I can't resist =]
I have an iphone AND a PSP (3000). Best of both worlds. PSP is a way better gaming machine not just because of the buttons. Graphics are better, crashing on complex scenes is non-existent, audio is great, saves my iphone battery for viewing movies on a plane when my PSP dies... Playing poker on iphone is fine, but playing a racing game or tiger woods or something is much better on PSP.
Also, I was going to wait for this to come out but replaced my PSP-1000 with a PSP-3000 a few weeks ago (not as much of an upgrade as I'd thought but it was new and good battery)... I'm much more happy I did that since I already have a UMD collection and would prefer to keep it that way. After all, most games I play come rented from B!ockbuster. I don't see any rental potential for the Go.
Lol you are stupid.
Not that i would even buy a PMP nowadays (most phones do the same thing) but if i had to choose: PSP-GO, it is clearly superior; a much better choice.
The iphone has a camera, ergo not a brilliant gaming device.
@macjonny
You fell sorry? Please explain... Actually don't because you might fall again.
Maybe I misunderstood but I believe he is trying to say that the Nokia NGage is a must buy.
OVERPRICED
I also share the opinion that the Go is overpriced.
If you compare it to the former PSP, there aren'ny real incitive despite the new shape and size to go with the GO. If you compare the price to full fledge home consoles, the GO is also too expensive. I mean you can get a Wii or an Xbox360 Arcade for cheaper than that. For 50$ more, you can a full fledge PS3 or Xbox 360 Elite.
Well, if you guys are interested in about a 40 dollar discount go to dell.com and use this coupon: 6FWJ247J1P44CK
It takes 15% off, its still kind of expensive, but if you really want it you might as well get it at a discounted price.
If you want to get it for 200, keep a watch on www.slickdeals.net for deals on the pspgo. Realistically I think this should have been 200 at the most to begin with (ideally 150) but if you look around, you can get it for cheaper.
Making fun of a little boy for trying to read, are you insane?
I'm sorry, I can't hear you. I'm deaf.
No milk will EVER be our milk!
FAIL! I was tempted to preorder one when I heard that Sony would be offering a program to get a digital copy of all my PSP games and that all upcoming PSP games would be released on digital and UMD as well. When I heard that program went belly up, so did the idea of me preordering this system.
I already have a PSP I plan on keeping (for games), and I already have an iPhone (for Phone), and a Zune HD (for music). Yet I'm still strangely drawn to this. I might wait for a slight price drop or a new color, since I dont NEED need it right away.
Kid you bought everything: iPhone, Zune and a PSP, What the fuck?
What is this, i don't even.
Just a gadget lover, I suppose. I love my old PSP for games. iPhone is a good phone with some fun apps. Horrible for games though, and a crappy music player. Loved my old 1st gen Zune, so upgraded to the HD a couple weeks ago, and that's my primary music player.
