HTC Droid Eris gets an ultra-minor update

What you want for your Droid Eris: Android 2.1. What you're actually getting: the tiniest of updates designed to fix just one bug. ROM version 1.17.605.1 is starting to make its way into the world via the phone's over-the-air update mechanism, fixing an intermittent bad signal indicator when bringing it out of standby. Yep, that's it -- so there'd better be a much heartier update in the wings later this quarter as Big Red has previously promised.

This is a significant update. Seriously. Anyone who has had their phone freeze will understand how annoying it is. Not as bad as when you had to pull the battery on a blackberry...but still not fun.

I woke up this morning and my Droid Eris had a message saying a software update was available. I was like yes! 2.1! And then I saw the update size...... 5.6mb

Uh, it doesn't fix a bad signal indicator from what I can read. It's to fix a pretty nasty bug that has been causing a lot of lockups when trying to bring the phone out of standby or unlock it.

I do notice it's a bit snappier. ESTask Manager is also reporting 51MB free memory, while prior to the update I never had more than 32MB free; I can't recall altering any programs/widgets to change it so I assume it's from the update. I'll take it!

hey it also added alittle function if youu hold down the power button theres a option that lets you turn your mobile network on or off

Finally! The last software update messed up my Eris big time. My phone freezes once a week when someone calls or texts me, and I have to pry apart my case and take out the battery. I swear verizon, if it wasn't for your network I would drop your ass and get an iPhone.

This post is more of a warning not to get our hopes up more than anything. And really, anyone who bought the Eris (including myself) was aware of the extra wait time to get to 2 (or 2.1). I've had very few problems with my Eris, and yes, the network is great so I guess you won't be hearing any 'iPhone switch threats' from me.

So, with the nexus 1, will all Android updates be practically instantaneous since Google will handle their distribution? If so, that would almost be reason enough to go that route.
