Sony Dash given ability to stream TVs and movies from Netflix, new lease on life
We were filled with excitement the moment Sony took the wraps off of its Dash personal internet viewer back at CES, but after learning that this was less of a tablet and more a sophisticated widget machine for in-home use, our joviality was understandably squashed. Today, Sony has given the doubters a reason to perk back up and pay attention, as the April-bound device will ship with the ability to stream Watch Instantly content from Netflix. As if that wasn't enough, Demand Media will also be offering Dash-tailored portals to content from eHow, Golflink and Livestrong.com, and it'll have no issues streaming "online music videos, television, or film content on-demand" to the 7-inch touchpanel. Still not convinced that this thing is worth $199? It's just an external battery mod away from greatness, you know!

I just hope that Sony can keep to that price point. They haven't been the best about creating devices like this at a reasonable price. As a larger screen Chumby it was worth the $200 but with Netflix its very much worth it.
Boom! Officially more useful than the iPad
@Jordan stick a battery on it and boom the ipad 4.0 competitor
@Jordan
And at a fraction of the price.
@Jordan Yeah, if it had an integrated battery it would be. Sadly this has to be plugged into a wall at all times -- no built-in battery.
@DarrenMurph, come on now Darren! Someone already informed you that no one reads more then ten feet from an outlet,....... What's the problem?
@Irondog Ha, I couldn't care less about reading, but I'd love to get a 3G or 4G card in here and watch Netflix on the go!
@Jordan
But still less useful than any simple netbook
@Plexus "But still less useful than any simple netbook"
Indeed, but unlike the iPad the Dash actually costs less than a netbook. At least I can't gripe that a $200 terminal can't multitask...or can it?
@Jordan Boom! Weren't you banned?
@bullshitexpresscom:
Ummmmm no....
Again, I stand by my previous statement, possibly the World's greatest Bedside Clock
@PATRICKmcnicholl I agree 100% looks like a great bedside clock...silly chumby
@PATRICKmcnicholl
No ... that would be the Pure Sensia.
This will be the worst Internet Radio in the world though, if they retain the Chumby incarnation of that function. He's hoping they make a "real" internet radio though, in which case, on that functionality alone, this will make a great set.
Sony also has to not ruin it by making the display too bright to be acceptable for bedside use. They tend to do this, unfortunately.
I am buying one, same day it comes out!
I've had the same bed side alarm clock since I was 15. Now I'm 30, and it's finally time to upgrade. I love the Future.
@ScaryFast You live in the future? Why am I always stuck in the present?
Sony needs to stop thinking they are Apple. They can't pull off locked-down proprietary crap too, one is enough.
@obarthelemy Lolwhut? I know Sony has a history of proprietary devices and formats, but how does a Chumby fueled device fall in line with that statement? The Bravia link, et al is just an app they release on top of the framework which is open to development by anyone if I recall.
I wonder how the sound quality on this thing will be. If it's decent, then I must figure out a way to unload my Logitech Squeezebox Radio and pick one of these up instead.
Wonder if this means that the widget will also exist for regular chumby's, since this is basically a chumby at heart?
@andysexton I wondered this as well! I'm not hopeful, though, as the press release seems to indicate that it will get content from two main sources: 1) Chumby OS and 2) over 1,500 apps from Sony's Bravia Internet Video platform.
I'm guessing Netflix is through #2, but here's hoping otherwise!
@DarrenMurph "I'm guessing Netflix is through #2, but here's hoping otherwise!"
Heh, you're probably right if it's a Sony funded app; but it can also be a similar situation to what the droid platform faces. The chipset in the Dash is much more powerful than the Chumby isn't it?
I have to admit, there is something that draws me powerfully to that jumped up alarm clock. I'm always amazed at the little things that make a difference to me. I have devices with 3.5" or similar screens and I have devices with 15" or larger screens, but something with a 7" sounds just right for a little $200 bedside entertainment center.*
*That's what she said
@borland502 +1 for epic that's what she said
Im buying one... i wonder what the retail price point will be... if sony is selling at 199, i woudl expect Etailers to come in ~179ish
hulu and im sold
Does the Amazon icon in the picture mean Amazon on Demand too?
@Seth Levy It is using Bravia Link so yes....you'll also be seeing that on the PS3 when it gets Bravia Link in the next couple of months (this will be how PS3 chucks the Netflix disc).
According to the screen shot, on Aug 20, 2010, it will be 87 degrees in San Diego. So this thing does future casting of weather?
@joelaf
lol
I suddenly have a reason to get this. Before, it didn't really do anything a smartphone couldn't do. I'd still like a couple other advantages though, as I don't know how much I'd actually use Netflix at bedside. E-reading newspapers would be nice.
Exciting product. Just pre ordered on Sonystyle.com
Look at the date the picture taken is from the future lol
I am buying this product day one but if Sony can add a webcam and some Skype action for even $50 more, it would be the best thing since slice bread.
Finally, something that I want from Sony that's also affordable! (I wonder if it'll play my ATRAC files collections...)
i would absolutely love to have this thing as my alarm clock... if it only had time, weather, and twitter, i would be willing to pay the price... how hard will it be to convince my wife that it only cost $50? pretty difficult i think...
and yes, i fear my wife...
@frooshfreak1 now that i think about it, i could probably get her to buy one as well... for the facebook app... heck, she already has a $1200 facebook machine i like to call a macbook pro... ugh... friggin facebook...
That's great and all. I am getting one. My wife and I have been searching for a product like this for years.
Netflix though....recently? Meh. No need to watch quality gems like the 2012 and Transformers imitators which seem to far outnumber the actual things I call movies.
That's more the movie studios fault (and partly Netflix lets be honest now) and not Sony's but still. The Netflix add-on is not adding much to the already great deal in my personal opinion.
More Wiggles from my alarm clock! XD
