Palm's webOS 1.4 emerges: screenshots galore
We heard (momentarily) that Sprint was fixing to roll webOS 1.4 out to Palm devices starting today, and it seems as if one particular Pre Central forum member has stumbled upon the software early. We've already shown you the full changelog, but if you're too anxious to wait for your own OTA alert, hit up the source link for a deep dive into webOS 1.4 screenshots. Oh, and there's a video recorded within 1.4 just after the break -- huzzah!
See more video at our hub!

the video looks great,good job palm!!!
@jmposvip
Hotmail Sync? Is that a feature now or for 1.4?
@Puggs no i have hotmail sync on mine now
@RyanGorup how did you get hotmail sync working?
@dipdeol i dunno haha
i did it right when i got the phone, got to email (the app), click email in the top left, preferences & accounts, add an account, and type in the address and password and you're done!
@RyanGorup is it actually syncing contacts, or just retrieving your mail via pop3?
@dipdeol it just does the mail im pretty sure (i dont really have a lot of hotmail contacts and the people i email i have their contact data on my phone from facebook)
@jmposvip wow this is like so totally awesome!!!!! wheres pedobear?
@Puggs Anything having to do with hotmail isn't so much a feature as it is a curse. Cursed be its name. I currently get 400 spams a day on that POS account. Its the sole reason it was abandoned years ago and now is only used to activate accounts.
@John Doe
"Anything having to do with hotmail isn't so much a feature as it is a curse. Cursed be its name. I currently get 400 spams a day..."
It may have more to do w/ who you gave you address to and sender ignorance (habitual To/CC abuse as opposed to BCC) than curses.
@F C
Well that's certainly part of it, but Hotmail's spam filtering is seriously useless compared to Google's. Don't forget there's plenty of other ways spammers can find your address.
I have my e-mail address publicly listed on numerous websites (so they're easily harvested) and receive thousands of spam per week, yet gmail filters pretty much all of them correctly. I saw my first spam for over 2 months in my inbox this morning. My hotmail account is unbearable in comparison and I've taken far more precautions over that address.
Back on the Palm topic, does anybody know how to force the update manually, particularly if you are not in the US and are using an unofficial network provider? :)
epic! i really want to know what will be in 2.0 and when they will release it. also, all those palm haters are dumb (cough gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/5480452/the-indie-phone-makers-last-stand). palm will be not "defeat" apple, but they will continue to "live"
@RyanGorup I think only a few people thought "death". More like unless they get greater traction then WebOS will revert back to a "Centro" style bridge between clamshells and smartphones. Or they'll be bought out.
I think one nice thing so far is that they tend to make their owners happy with updates. They clearly are a creative bunch that did a lot with few resources; if they can't manage to make WebOS independently, I imagine a few players would relish buying them out.
@RyanGorup They're not palm-haters; they're apple-lovers.
The vid quality is sweet ... the splash at the end is handled very well... so is the sound quality!
I'd love to see the video, but I get a child jumping into a swimming pool on the Engadget iPhone app.
@PaulMdx That's a video of what someone recorded off of the Pre. That is what we're seeing on the main engadget page too.
@PaulMdx this is a video taken from a palm pre not of a palm pre taking video if thats what you were thinkin would be on there
My bad. Chalk that one up to browsing while watching tv.
Palm should decrease the radius of those rounded corners.
Would look more pro and eats less screenspace.
@doutorpiranha
there's a patch for that......*sigh*
@doutorpiranha
Right, you're a better graphic designer than Palm's UI team.
@doutorpiranha The design of the UI and the Pre were inspired by river bed stones. Haven't come across a river bed stone with hard corners.
@doutorpiranha I disagree. If you'd prefer a comparatively ugly UI that is full of giant rectangles and rough edges (in every possible sense of the word), well, Droid Does.
or engadget could have read the article and saw that thats from an unlocked GSM palm pre in vietnam...
@solarmoo900 .. imported from Germany. It's a QWERTZ GSM Pre.
This is poop, where's my update?
I even updated all my apps, which I never do out of protest due to the lack of change information. Come on Palm, how bout telling us what each app update contains like my iPod touch does?
@JerkyChew Some apps do provide update info. It is the software writer NOT Palm that is the problem with the lack of update info. However it would be nice of Palm could "Encourage" update info be provided when an app is updated on the store...
@JerkyChew
Agreed, this is poop. I've been checking the update screen all day and still no 1.4
Hey look, the battery is low! What am I not surprised.
@yankees368 Considering the guy who took this video had been playing with it taking screen shots uploading pictures and videos left and right, and answering everyone's question about it, I can kinda understand why it's low.
That's what happens when you actually use the phone instead of let it sit in your pocket.
@donatom3
I have a pre..er, had (its currently on ebay right now), The Pre has, by far, the worst EVDO radio I have ever seen. In a medium or low signal area, the radio heats up and drains the battery like nothing else. Hell, it will actually DRAIN the battery even while plugged in when streaming pandora.
@yankees368 It was definitely worse in the beginning than it is now. But from what I've seen on my Sprint one, most of the time it drains battery has to do with constantly pulling Data. Email is usually the biggest culprit of this on mine.
I've had all sorts of CDMA smart phones on Sprint, and when it's constantly pulling data in the background is where I've seen the battery usually die.
@yankees368 you must have a bad battery. i talk on the phone for atleast a combined 2 hours, i browse the web a lot (like at least once an hour for like 10 mins) and i look at new apps, i use google maps and everything and my battery is still at 30 percent when i go to bed. i know its not the best but its not that bad and i get great coverage (west chicagoland)
@RyanGorup
I have a launch day pre with 2 batteries. I highly doubt both batteries are bad. Its just a really, REALLY bad EVDO radio.
@yankees368 yeah. do you live in bad coverage? i know if i have my phone in someplace with bad coverage for more than a couple mins (large buildings, schools) the battery gets bad but also it could be the hardware of the phone and its efficiency not just the battery. you're right, the battery could be better but for me at least its not terrible
@yankees368 I don't live in bad coverage, but sometimes I do find myself in those areas. At work, my signal nears -100 dbm. My pre would drop 50% of the battery just idling for 5 hours. My blackberry hardly dips under 5%.
@yankees368 It's possible your phone's defective. While my Pee's on the Touchstone (in my car) I can simultaneously stream Pandora and use GPS and even then the battery still continues to charge (albeit very slowly).
How about, you know, like making a GSM model so the other 6.4 billion people who don't live in the USA might be able to help ya not go broke. Eh, Palm? Haven't been paying attention to the Zune debarcle, ehh.
@Cy Starkman That's a GSM pre from Germany. They're the ones who got the update first.
i want a palm device for at&t already!!! = [
still lugging around an iphone 1st gen, im waiting
yaaaay today is a good day
Has anyone importedthe Palm Pre from Mexico?
It's supposedly has AT&T 3G bands.
Sweet, can't wait to see it on my Sprint Pre..Go Palm!!..please don't go out of business yet!!
The video above with the girl jumping into the pool would have made a 10000x better commercial to advertise the Pre than those awful ones with that creepy-looking pale chick.
Palm, maybe you can use this new version of your OS as an excuse to increase your advertising budget and show off your phones to a public that barely even knows you exist.
WebOS trumps iPhone OS IMO. Well done palm, you'll pull through these tough times!
@werty1432k I actually agree, but their hardware seriously lacks.
@XChrisX I disagree especially from a design stand point. Both the pixi and pre look good to me but we all have different opinions on that. The Pre Plus is definitely a step in the right direction!
@werty1432k
webOS need more information in the homscreen.
@TareG
versus the iphone having none...
