I have to say that what really drew me to this game wasn't the multi-character-control or the great graphics; wonderful soundtrack; fantastic character design; or intriguing storyline -- although all of these have kept me devoting my time to it! [It is] the setting of the game: a mystical 'Baroque' period (incorporating elements from the 17th-19th centuries) that has grown to encompass an Underworld, lost Dinosaur areas, a forgotten Aztec-esque civilization and so much more with the recent expansions.
It's interesting that so many MMO's are set in a more 'high-fantasy' world like Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft, and Aion, or set in sci-fi futures like Star Trek and Star Wars (I know I'm being very basic here. I feel that Sword of the New World is so much more interesting because it applies the mystical fantasy to a romantic, "New World" that is being explored, colonized and just beginning to approach an Industrial Revolution. It is a world of political intrigue, unique monsters, lost civilzations, eerie ruins, romantic vistas and lots of action and adventure!
SotNW blends some 'high fantasy' elements like magic and demonic monsters with Europe and America's own pasts. Add inspiration from all over the world and -- in my opinion -- [one] comes up with one of the most interesting, albeit rather under-appreciated, MMOs out there!
