Gigantic ASUS periodical reveals and specs numerous new laptops
Curious what's inside a new ASUS laptop? Then Notebook Review has the treat for you -- earlier this month, forumite David took the time to download the company's massive 108MB ASUS World Magazine PDF and laid out the spec sheets for not one, not two, but a veritable smörgåsbord of potent portables. There's 36 in all; we've told you about some of them before, to be sure -- but others are getting solid specs for the first time, and there are even a few diamonds in the rough. Enough chit-chat, on with the show!
- U-series: Otherwise known as ASUS' Bamboo Collection, the U-series laptops were highlighted at CES, where we discovered they would have Core i5 CPUs and USB 3.0 support. Well, that's not the whole story. They've also all got NVIDIA Optimus auto-switching graphics between an onboard Intel GMA HD and the GeForce 310M 1GB. Oh, and forget Core i5 -- these machines support processors all the way up to the 2.66GHz Core i7-620M. Highlight: The U30JC, with a combo Blu-ray drive and a chiclet keyboard that won a iF Product Design Award.
- UL-series: ASUS for "UnLimited," you can read UL as "ultra low," as in Intel's ultra low voltage (ULV) processors that provide 8+ hours of battery life and let these notebooks stay cool despite being under an inch thin. We saw the UL80JT sport NVIDIA Optimus at CES and got hands-on with the Optimus-equipped UL50VF; now, the UL30JT now has it as well. Highlight: That same UL50VF, with an estimated 12+ hours of battery life.
- NX-series: Remember that 18-inch behemoth with twin touchpads? Apparently it weighs 10.5 pounds.
- N-series: The ASUS "eNtertainment" series, as reported, has several models with USB 3.0, and several with sound by Bang & Olufsen. There are also a couple with NVIDIA Optimus, a couple with multitouch touchpads, and all have the apparent ability to automatically upscale DVDs to 1080p. Highlight: The N43JF, which reportedly features "GeForce 400-series high end graphics." Mobile Fermi, anyone?
- K-series, A-series: ASUS' lower-end laptops, with a wide variety of specs and features, where nothing particularly stands out save an ergonomic "chocolate" keyboard that won a reddot design award.
- PL-series: Low-voltage Core i5 processors and NVIDIA Optimus switchable graphics give these fingerprint-reading, aluminum-lidded business laptops an estimated 10 hours of battery life.
- G-series: Now we're talking games. We've got additional specs here on the Radeon HD 5870-equipped G73JH we told you about last month, which can apparently support a Blu-ray drive and a pair of HDDs; the 3D-ready G51JX 3D, a Core i7-720QM and GeForce GTS 360M-equipped update to the G51J we saw last year; and a similarly specced but low-res 16-inch gaming notebook in the G60JX.

I would really like to try this dual touchpad.
The U30JC won a product design award? Uh- From the pictures I've seen, ASUS would have had to buy that award. It looks quite ugly from here.
@think before you react
Agreed!
I waited and waited, now its here...... perhaps new macbook pro 13" will suit me nicely (shrugs)
I'm ready to buy the G73JH as soon as they update to the newest radeon.
@Frawley Yes, also the Asus nx90jq looks nice from the feature along with that wide screen (The 18.4-in 1080p screen) and bluray drive. Reactions: http://bit.ly/asus-nx90jq-high-roller-asus-laptop
@Frawley What's wrong with the ATI Radeon HD 5870?
and i got my k42jr few weeks ago ....
fap fap fap
the UL series is AWESOMEEE
*hugs UL30*
@Peytral I was about to buy a UL30VT because my laptop died but I'm waiting for the UL30JT now. Both look like awesome laptops, but I'd prefer to spend a significant amount of money on a current generation CPU.
@iofthestorm I'm waiting for the UL30JT so the UL30VT-A1's price drops :D
@Peytral agreed.
I dislike the metallic one-button design below the touchpad. Either two buttons, or integrate them into the touchpad. That's just my aesthetic preference :\
The N43JF says it has a Geforce 400 series graphics card, pretty cool. I want to know more about that card.
Other than that, I don't like low-res screens, so Asus, it looks like you're out for this gen. Sorry.
@Jacob1
I agree.
@Jacob1
I'm sure nvidia can rename a 210 um.. 310 to meet your expectations.
@Jacob1 seriously - i cannot stand this trend of 15.6" laptops that sound awesome except none of them even have a 1600x900 res...reminds me of butterfaces, everything looks great until they turn around.
and no, i dont want the only laptops they do offer in 1600x1080, a big bulky gaming laptop with a hideous cover =/
The UL30JT might just replace my current girlfriend.
@HawtDawg
Imaginary girlfriends are quite easy to replace uh :p ?
@JonJon
Yea... :'(
The N43 looks amazing, my only criticism would be the low resolution screen.Any word on a release date?
@geegee A release date will not suffice. I saw the N82 on here in January and they said Late February it would be released and now its looking like it will be released in May/June. This N43 looks really amazing but im not willing to wait till christmas
I wish I had enough money to upgrade my N81 to an N82, I could really use the Optimus technology. It doesn't seem as if the battery is in the back though.
I've got to say, ASUS laptops are really impressive. They really put the bang in the buck. I'll be buying a laptop soon for university. I'm almost definitely sure it'll be an ASUS.
Wow. That's a lot of tags . .
Oh and hey, I'm new :)
What the..? No 12"s? What is up with that?
Wait, nevermind.. ONE 12"... and with an Intel 4500... boo.
Well, looks like I may be going 13" unless HP brings out an updated version of the 311 with long battery life and ION2
@Organic Jerk
they already released the 1201N
@Organic Jerk
And the 1201T
@darkNiGHTS & @JeremyBenthem : Both are ok, but they lack in battery life..., and since ION2 was introduced, I'm looking forward to it.. Want to make an overseas trip soon and need a mini powerhouse to tag along..
I'm surprised there are no ION2's supposedly on the ASUS horizon... besides the nettops I guess
This is a comment.
@Alexster404
Nahhh
@Alexster404 No, this is madness...
@pogodrummer Madness? This is Engadget!
@Alexster404
This is LAME.
Wow so many TAGS :D good job Engadget
yesss! these are the laptops ive been waiting for. now we just need a release date :(
Hmm, I might pick up a PL30JT after I sell my Macbook, but I wish I could test it out somewhere first...
Why are their no ULV i5/i7 ones without dedicated graphics? Like the old UL30A
Why is it taking so damn long for any Core UM parts to make their way into anything. Been waiting for many many months now.
@adwhitex Supposedly Acer bought a ton of them so other manufacturers are having trouble getting enough for their own laptops.
Ahaha I tip EnGADGET for this article :D. I'm proud.
@JonJon
nice tipping.
BTW it's the biggest amount of tags I've never seen on an article...
Like a Tags visual aggression.
The U30 really gives the Vaio Z a run for it's money, no?
@Atkins
Does the JT have bluetooth ? Anybody know this ? None of the laptops seem to mention BT in their connectivity options.
But still no ARM netbook! :(
I'm losing faith ASUS.....
@grobbo
Hate to break it to ya, but it is going to be a long time (if at all).
Your best bet is to wait for Chrome OS to be released, and hope that it makes some decent sales. By that stage I am thinking quad core 2GHz Cortex-A9's will be in production, and they will make Atom look like pez (Actually Atom already looks like pez next to the current 1GHz dual cores).
But another problem is, if Chrome OS is sold with the netbook and the manufacturer never intends any other OS such as a full blown linux distro to be installed, we may only end up with cheap "good enough" CPU's and like 512MB RAM (Such as the $499 Skylight, eff that).
My dream is a 13 inch smartbook with a powerful quad core ARM CPU and 2GB+ RAM with a thin, sturdy build quality. And while 13 inch sounds too big, I believe weight is the most important factor in portability and it should be possible for a 13 inch smartbook to be as light as a 10 inch netbook, a pretty ideal weight.
