More bad juju for JooJoo: shipping delays, pre-sale questions
Monday, March 29 was supposed to be a happy day for Fusion Garage -- that's when the first JooJoo tablet pre-orders were scheduled to greet customers. Unfortunately, it's looking like Tuesday, March 30 will instead go down as yet another day full of unresolved questions for the fledgling company: not only did the 29th come and go without a peep, a new document from the TechCrunch lawsuit sent to Gizmodo suggests that only 90 total pre-orders were made as of February 11, and that 15 of those orders were canceled. Uh-oh. Now, Fusion Garage tells us that JooJoo units are actually in Los Angeles, where they've just been released from a paperwork-related customs delay, and that the "absolute worst case" is that they'll arrive to customers via overnight shipping on April 2nd, although FG is hoping for the 1st. We're also told that the 90 preorder number is low and the court documents are inaccurate because the company's relationship with PayPal was terminated over those issues with the terms of sale -- but the JooJoo website still lists PayPal as the only payment option. Right. See what we meant about questions?
Oh, and just in case this whole saga wasn't sordid enough already, the "leaked document" making all these waves today is actually a statement by TechCrunch's lawyer made in support of a motion to enjoin Fusion Garage from selling the JooJoo, and it's been publicly available since February 22, when it was first filed -- you can check the whole thing in the PDF below. How or why it's being dredged up now is somewhat curious, if you're into that sort of conspiracy vibe, but we'd say the more interesting question is whether Fusion Garage actually gets the JooJoo to customers -- and whether or not it's good enough to erase the uniquely contentious circumstances of its birth.
Update: Fusion Garage just called us to clarify their earlier comments: while the relationship with PayPal is ending in favor of a more traditional payment processor, it's still in place -- so that 90 number certainly seems more meaningful, although it is still over a month old. As for the shipment delays, we were also given a screenshot of the DHL manifest showing the customs delay -- check it after the break.

This turned from the most promising project in a long while (CrunchPad) and ended as the most disappointing 'could have beens' ever
@bazookafx3 It still looks promising its just seems like the sales team and production team is run by idiots. Still a beautiful product with lots of promise.
@bazookafx3 The JooJoo is such a turn off now.
@Techno1q Yeah I know what you mean. The JooJoo is kinda like that really hot girl you know but shes really slutty so you want to stay away.
@bazookafx3 apple will sue
@bazookafx3: Where are the clowns who were going to drop $500 on this dog instead of the iPad?
@bazookafx3
Pretty much. I can see these becoming a collector's item if nothing else though.
@grahamj
All 80 of the pre-orders minus those who canceled were in that one box shipped on DSL. Man these things are flying out the door just like the iPad. If there were 80 pre-sold how many of those were for the press who wanted to do a evaluation story. Where are all the customers, the press sure hyped this thing. I think it shows the a one purpose device will fail. This company will be out of business in no time.
@emopoops
why?
U think apple has a broad patent on delaying delivery of pre-sales order ?
\s
@werty1432k
"if she's really slutty you want to stay away"
Um... if she's hot and really slutty all I think of is how much easier it'll be to sleep with her...
Put it this way:
Hot+prude=meh
Hot+slutty=good times
@Ariel Bender
"So long, suckers." Homer Simpson
90 trusting geeks order the ultimate tablet = WORLD CLASS EPIC FAIL
Fusion Garage really is some dude's garage filled with old computer parts. He mailed out a bunch of boxes partially filled with laundry powder and now he's flown the coop.
@bazookafx3 what changed ? apart from Mrs HissyFit getting dumped ?
@werty1432k - Anything can be beautiful with lots of promise if you don't have to actually deliver a product. I don't give them any points for press releases and demos of something that never exists. There is just too much of that going on, and unfortunately Engadget encourages it by posting every fly-by-night company's wet dream.
@think before you react
Put it this way:
Hot+prude=meh
Hot+slutty=good times=diseases!
hm.. think before you act ! :)
@Ariel Bender
@bazookafx3: Where are the clowns who were going to drop $500 on this dog instead of the iPad?
Here I am :) I have my iPad on the way, hopefully a JooJoo when it shows and of course the WePad when its available. Can switch every day :) All the data is in the cloud anyway (email, calendar, shared files etc..) so there will not be any extensive syncing (except for music lovers, but that stays on the iPhone/iPod/zune/BB/WinMo/Android anyway).
@MosesusedaniPad
yea these guys have always seemed real croocked to me. Buying from them would feel like buying third hand off the black market.
@bazookafx3 I still want one, but I need it to get released and reviewed! damn it! :|
@bazookafx3 I just don't understand how you think they copied a product that noone even knew anything about. Or like MarcusMaximus said, the multiple devices that other companies have made before Apple's iPad. What patent would Apple use to sue them? They don't have a patent on the tablet form factor.

@werty1432k
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was a beautiful statement.
I think Fusion Garage needs to advertise!!! And properly. (*cough* like Palm should for the Palm Pre *cough*)
April Fools!
Oh my God! Get it together already.
Fantastic article title.
@SolidSnake
and I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly commend Nilay for managing to wait this long in the news cycle on this device before giving into the unavoidable pun...good show!
is there even a tablet?
they could be just lying haha
@inertone Probably not. Wouldnt surprise me one bit at this point if a customer received an actual brick in their delivery box. Or a brown turd, take your pick.
@peestandingup As opposed to what, a blue turd?
@WalnutSoap Hey dude, its possible. Ever ate those "Oops! All Berries" from Cap'n Crunch??
You'll shit all the colors of the rainbow.
@WalnutSoap
Chinese food makes green turds
No JooJoo beans for anyone... =(
This company has gone through a lot of ish in trying to get this product out...could this be that thing you people call...karma?
@Plazmic Flame
TRUTH!
I realllllly want this to be a good tablet but who knows if it will ever work out right.
Its unfortunate really
I bet iPad is better
Worst name since the Wii.
@AlwaysThere - And Nintendo went Wii-Wii all the way to the bank...
Now it looks like it's going to be worth getting one just for the collector's value, so you can say "I own one of only a few ever produced JooJoos" and sell it on Ebay years from now to some nostalgic guy.
I'm sorry but this entire JooJoo thing was a joke from the start.
90 preorders total? Lmao. I would never put down $500 to some unknown company for a device that has been through so much controversy, especially considering that Fusion Garage's CEO comes across as one slimy bugger. Watch the Engadget video interview with him and Josh T and you'll cringe. I did.
@juliojorgeortiz
I'm curious to see if anyone here admits to preordering hehe
@grahamj I'll admit it. I ordered a JooJoo (the day it was available for pre-order).
I had been following the cruchpad for a while before, and the JooJoo looked much nicer (in concept anyways).
I ordered the JooJoo, it was for the 16:9, web viewing (flash, silverlight, etc...), for HD content and that 9 second boot-up time.
Now I'm sticking with it just to see how it turns out.
Wow, that really sucks for them (if this is true).
It's hardly suprising that the pre-orders have been so low. I think it's a vastly-overpriced web browser. The philosophy around getting the device out at the end of March, was an attempt to beat Apple at their own game.
These companies should be pioneering, not following in the winds of Steve Jobs.
@Ruthless Following in the winds of Steve Jobs? Ewww, I bet there's more than one app for that.
Early customers get a free Optimus keyboard dock.
They should have just stuck with TechCrunch and Michael Arrrrrrrrington.
It's confirmed, primary reason engadget likes reporting on this is to have the chance to type out the name joojoo
Wow. 90 whole preorders. I bet most of them are buying it just to sell it on eBay as a collector's item next year when Fusion Garage is out of business.
I sort of want one now.
It's always looked like basically a good product.
I WANT MY JOO JOO!
Laughing my balls off at the 90 pre-orders figure.
Notion Pink Adam is next. Maybe it can manage to sell a total of 100 units before flaming out.
No one forget that Engadget was implicit in creating a lot of hype for a product in the middle of a lawsuit with an extremely sketchy background. Even linking to the product page and encouraging people to buy one.
So Engadget was implicit in ripping anyone who preordered one off.
@Tenkiyohou We never encourage anyone to buy anything -- and even if you stubbornly think we did, it doesn't look like we were any too successful in this case!
@Nilay Patel All the repeated "I want one" are encouraging a purchase, then all the time dedicated to Chandra with as much as a video interview from Topolsky. There were nothing but praises for this tablet without mention of the sketchiness.
And no, thankfully few people bought one because Engadget's readers are typically smarter than that. And I should clarify. I'm not accusing you Nilay, I'm accusing Topolsky. It's like he had a bitter period or something and more than hype up the JooJoo just wanted to tread on Arrington. Not that I like Arrington, just I didn't like what Topolsky was doing.
