Eye-Fi's 4GB Geo X2 WiFi SDHC card now shipping for $70
We heard that the Apple Store-exclusive Geo X2 would start shipping to Americans at some point in May, and it looks like the time is now for those who've been patiently waiting. Eye-Fi's latest Class 6, WiFi-enabled SDHC card packs 4GB of space, an 802.11n module and auto-geotagging for those who can't make heads or tails of their latest gallery of vacation shots. It can be headed your way any moment... so long as you're cool with handing over your name, address, credit card number, favorite TV drama from 1988 and $69.95 (plus tax, where applicable). Oh, life and its choices.

Hill Street Blues. Hands down.
I see a lot of articles about this device but can someone explain what this thing actually do/does? Does it convert your computer to a WiFi hotspot, does it provide WiFi service anywhere, or is it just an adapter that gives your non-WiFi computer WiFi? Or is it a device that connects to local WiMax services?
@malexandria1 It wirelessly transfers your photos from the SD card to your wifi enabled computer. This one also geo-tags them via the wifi network (kind of like GPS but a lot worse).
@malexandria1 It is a SD memory card with wifi on it. You can transfer files to and from it via wifi.
@gittenlucky Thanks for letting me know. But what would be the point? It's an SD Card, so wouldn't I just copy the files off the card directly into my computer if the card already has to be in the computer anyway?
@malexandria1 you don't have to take the card out of the camera to transfer to your pc, but you have the option of doing it the old fashioned way as well.
@malexandria1 I just got one of these for my wife for mother's day -- well, an earlier model, but you get the idea. She loves it. All it does is let her skip the physical step of taking the card out and then making a few clicks, but she finds that very convenient.
Apple Store exclusive? Does Apple even sell anything that takes an SD card?
@bsharitt Finally they do, their new line of Macbook Pros all have SD Cards, and the iMac has them.
@bsharitt
Yes.
@malexandria1 It's about time. I'm sure Apple took the opportunity to tout the inclusion of SD card readers and an amazing innovation.
@bsharitt
why would they need to when you can transfer photos via wifi from an SD card with this?
@bsharitt As silly as your comment is (all the MBPs have SD slots, and the rest can read them with ubiquitous readers), it's rendered even sillier by the fact that this SD card is designed to NEVER BE PLUGGED IN. It's a Wi-Fi card, dude. It finds your computer over the network, and transfers your photos while it sits in your camera.
@malexandria1
But your MacBook Pro is already a computer...isn't this for camera?
@bsharitt That's the point. Since most of their computers (aside from the new macbooks) don't have SD slots, this becomes a major convenience for people with those computers. It alleviates the shortcomings of not having an SD slot. That's why apple is selling them, I think.
I wish the geotagging worked in countries other than the U.S.!
@AaronX geotagging works outside the US as well. It relies on the presence of Wi-Fi networks. You can read more about it here:
http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/features/geotagging
@EyeFi Ok, I wish it'd work in Australia and Singapore, other than the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, Korea and Taiwan! But great work with the geotagging, EyeFi. And it's amazing how you fit Wi-Fi into an SD card.
Again, Why is apple selling this? Can't any Eye-fi send a photo to their mac? Is it because iphoto can see the geo tagging?
i guess they're just selling it as an accessory from their store. Doesn't really relate to a specific device.
I'll probably get one of those cards one day, but not yet. Sweetness indeed.
so with geotagging, I assume you have to be in a wifi zone for it to find you?
Call me crazy, but most of the geotagging I would actually care about would take place in areas where wifi is not readily available... ie NATURE.
@petepete Exactly. This "feature" sounds rather unhelpful.
Why don't they make compact flash version? Or is there an adapter?
Any word of an Australian distributor for these?
Would love to get one from a real supplier, not ebay
