HTC EVO 4G root tutorial available, and not a moment too soon
We know that you've been champing at the bit ever since you heard that the EVO 4G had been successfully rooted, so we're pleased to tell you that the gang at the XDA-developers forum has gone and posted everything necessary for you to perform the operation yourself. Better yet, Android Central has even posted a step-by-step tutorial. Now you too can perform a semi-obscure operation on an as-yet-unreleased smartphone! Check out the links below to get started.

Just in time
@jiggz
This is indeed good news. However, I won't be rooting my phone for now. On the day they find a way to integrate HTC Sense into Froyo and put that on the Evo, is the Glorious Day that I will root my phone.
@Starfleet Captain
I doubt that'll happen until the official release.
@jiggz
If only the Evo's keys below the screen werent round :(
@jiggz Indeed, especially when I run that froyo port on my rooted Evo 4G!
Dear Engadget please link to the full site. Not the mobile androidcentral
I wonder.. will installing Froyo help with the battery issues? ive been reading any review i can find online for the evo and everyone keeps complaining about the horrible battery.
@Cg006 thats what I want to know too, not just for Evo, but for all androind phones that are getting froyo. Would be cool at least few % just to say its another step in right direction
@nk edit: android -.-
@Cg006
Every review I read said positive things about the battery, like the engadget review of it.
@Cg006
I have had hands on with this phone for over a week now and I must admit that battery life is not perfect but definitely not as bad as some reviews claim. The battery for me is about equal to my Iphone 3GS and I am by no means a light user.
@Cg006 Only a couple places have said it was outright horrible- most have said it was average or the same as the iphone. Techcrunch said it was bad, but, well, we know how trustworthy their non-apple reviews are.
As far as I can tell, the better battery life is kinda blow out of proportion- they said it would be better battery usage while browsing, but you're not browsing on your phone 100% of the time.
@schmidt1985
How have you had a full week of owning this phone already?
@zsmorr
Maybe you should stop reading only reviews that say positive things about the phone? I have read at least 3 reviews and watched 1 that complained about the battery life being 3-4 hours with heavy use.
That is unacceptable.
@xeren
I am really torn. New iphone is around the corner (i have the old 3g) and now that ATT is starting the Data limitations, that is gonna suck big time. Although they are claiming you can grandfather the data plan. that evo is looking pretty sweet especially with the rooting. I havent been at XDA reading on android.. but i was pretty active back on the WinMobile 6.5 days and i used to change the rom on my phone alot... But i remember that being pretty messy, lots of issues, is the android platform much better in that regard? I plan to root it if i get it and put froyo keep it all stock. :)
@Cg006
How can any self-respecting ex-XDA user consider purchasing an iPhone? Android is the new WinMo; everything else is a flaming bag of restricted access.
@Bandigolo
The reason i got the iphone was because of the simplicity. it just works. jailbraking is dead simple to do, support of all the apps....I got tired of having a phone that even the alarm wouldnt work. WinMo6.5 was a nightmare to me. No matter what custom rom id pick, there were always problems. I had a very bad experience and decided to jump on the iphone bandwagon. and since then besides all the limitations etc.. it has been a great phone.
@Cg006
Your perfectly sound logic cannot penetrate my mind.
@Cg006 check your ATT data usage on your account website. I was all up in arms about data capping until I checked and saw I used no more than .3 gigs a month, except one month that was 1.2 gigs. And I thought I was a heavy user....
@Joao how bout you stupid believing the fud
The iPhone 3gs gets the exact same 4 hours with heavy use. The pre gets about 3. The OnLY smartphones that have decent battery life are black berrys
@Cg006
I'm not sure what to do either. I'm due for an update on Verizon, and I need a new smartphone before I start work in September. I just don't want to get a phone that isn't 4G capable if everyone will have their networks ready early next year. Should I switch to sprint for the EVO? If not, what phone should I be waiting for?
@redkamel
Your phone data usage will absolutely pale in comparison to your data usage if you use tethering. Which I imagine you will since that's the whole point. My roommate and I had this discussion last night. If you don't think you'll use tethering very often, then I'm sure your data cap will never be an issue.
@DefPoet
The only reason BB battery life is better than the other phones you mentioned is because BB's are low-power portrait QWERTY's with small non-touch screens and weak processors. If you love email, BBM, and battery life, they're perfect. But it's an Apples v. Oranges comparison to modern touch screen smartphones.
@DefPoet
Aaaaand Symbian ones..
@Cg006 No is not. You install a rom you want and then you find out bluetooth doesnt work like it should. Other have microphone problems.
Is just a huge mess. Is lovely to hae the ability but 80% of the roms out there are crap. With the exception of cyanogen & enomthers and they are pretty much stock with tweaks.
I was in that android world for 2 years. Not worth it. So im back to my dumbphone (iphone) and im happy with it. The quality of the apps use to botehr me on android. The iphone have awesome looking software.
To each it's own. I went from iphone to android to webos. The grass is not greener on the other side.
@Johanu. OK you got but I have a excuse as to why I didnt mention them is we Never see them on thiaaa county. But you are correct about their battery life
@Bandigolo That's b.s. How is having to root an Android any different from having to jailbreak an iphone?
@vqro
You're kidding, right?
@Bandigolo
android is the new what? you sure you frequent xda? android roms improve performance a little and add custom themes but that's it. I remember back in my WInmo days I would go to XDA everyday and test out new apps that actually did something. android apps do get me by when it comes to business, but as a phone I am embarrassed daily when calling the wrong client 3 times a day because the call log on this phone lags.
@vqro You know what I just did? I just beat Super Metroid on my Droid. You can't do that on an iPhone without jailbreaking. Apple restricts apps while the OHA does not. That is the difference. The only apps that need root on Android are the ones that actually need root.
@flexte
Yes, but WinMo is dead, my friend. let it go.
@FrankDTank
Exactly!! That was my issue with Winmo a few yesrs back. I got tired of messing with the custom roms. SOmething always didnt work. I was doing a little reading on the current Froyo rom for the evo.. apparently none of the phones sensors work; and that reminded me of the Winmo days. I remember like every other week id change roms. That is why i have stuck with my iphone. Same hardware across the board so its all the same. it all JUST WORKS. i am still interested int he evo though... but if the roms situation is like the winmobile stuff.. i think i will have to stay away.
@wakeuplan
Get the EVO 4G. When your contract is up, LTE should be available from Verizon and hopefully stable.
Yesssss can't wait til tomorrow!!!!1!1!1!!
everything is better, rooted..
champing at the bit? isn't it "chomping"?
@jj91709
champing is the original form, and the 'correct' form depending on what writing standard you need to adhere to(eg. Associated Press)
Chomping has become generally acceptable because of its common misuse.
Are you glad you asked ?? :)
@AstroSeven
Hey thanks for the grammar lesson! However, I still can't see myself saying "champing at the bit" and having everyone correct me at which point fists will likely fly as I break out my grammatical chops.
@AstroSeven actually, yeah. i didn't know that, and it bugs me when people use terms that are "correct" through common misuse (i.e. "i could care less." god i hate that one). i'll try to remember to use "champing."
EVO: "Nick, look at your HD2...now back at me. Look at it again, now back at me. Sadly, it isnt me. but if it stopped using WM 6.5, it could have potential."
@Nick B *looks at my hd2* *goes on xda* all the potential i need.
@Nick B Lmao epic win +1
@Nick B "Hello, Nick. Look at your HD2. Now back to me. Now back at your HD2. Now back to me. Sadly, your HD2 isn't me, but if it stopped using windows operating systems, it could look like me. Look down, back up. Where are you? You're in a Sprint store with the phone your phone could look like. What's in your hand? Back at me. I have it, it's your HD2 with 2 apps that you love. Look again. The HD2 is now an EVO. Anything is possible when your phone looks like the HTC EVO. I'm on an iPhone."
tomorrow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but i kinda like HTC sense..what to do what to do?
@neeko18 ill root once Froyo can be installed without losing HTC sense and 4G.
@neeko18
That's what I said...... :)
@neeko18 From what I understand ROOT just gives you some advanced capabilities like system admin. You CAN flash a custom ROM to replace sense, but you can root and keep sense.
Can you completely brick your device if you mess up the process? Or is it like the iPhone (which is nigh impossible to brick)?
I really want to do this when I get my Evo and would HATE to brick my brand new phone!
@NaeemTHM
Higly unlikely. If you ever get in trouble, you just boot into recovery, were you can backup/install new rom. Atleast, that's how it is on the droid.
