Chile becomes first country to guarantee net neutrality, we start thinking about moving
Net neutrality: you want it, we want it, ISPs pretty much hate it. Chilean politicians? Those guys love the stuff! The Board of the Chamber of Deputies voted almost unanimously to pass Bulletin 4915 which, among other things, forces an ISP to:
There are other provisions as well forcing ISPs to protect user's privacy and the integrity of their systems, but it's the network neutrality bit we're really digging here. However, the cynics among us are wondering how long until ISPs start claiming that bandwidth-hogging sites pose a risk to user's systems. We're sure they just don't want your tubes to get backed up....ensure access to all types of content, services or applications available on the network and offer a service that does not distinguish content, applications or services, based on the source of it or their property.

Net neutrality, do they even have power down there?
@jonbruc Misinformed criticism. GDP per capita for Chile is over $15,000. It's not America, but electricity is certainly on their list of "luxuries".
@mrphillipawood You even know what you can find "Down There"
@saraos Yay terrorist training sites.
@mrphillipawood
In other news... Rapidshare moves to Chile.. more after the break.
@Son Of a Gun I Love your imagination... Go and buy a Mapa Mundi...
@jonbruc
I spent several weeks in Chile last October. It is not like most of the rest of South America. The police are honest, the water is clean, and stuff generally works. Chile has natural resources and a young demographic, with the right leadership it will go places. Think of it as California in 1950.
@Ed T Yeah and look how Cali turned out, ugh.
@mrphillipawood
I really hate the ignorant people that think the rest of the world don't even have phones, electricity or internet.
Can you come out of your bubble and see that there are more things to know?!
@mrphillipawood well, is hard to imagine electricity being a "luxury" when there are over 16 million cellphones in Chile (almost 100% penetration) and an Internet penetration rate of 50% of the population (Largest in South America according to InternetWorldStats).
@Son Of a Gun
What's your problem with California, still the biggest GDP of all but a few countries total. Even in a serious debt problem that's not the people's fault either. I wish people were informed before shooting their mouth off.
@jonbruc what a dork these are just two quotes on Chiles economy "the Chilean economy is highlighted among the most stable and booming economies in the world." "a tremendously strong economic reputation, both in Latin America and within the greater global economic community." Read up before making ignorant comments.
"we start thinking about moving"
Bye!!
@dj4monie
Yes, it is their fault. That state throws around money like P Diddy on New Years. and now they have a massive debt. Its simple cause and effect. They need to learn fiscal responsibility.
My advise, do what I do, listen to Dave Ramsey, He'll set ya straight.
@dj4monie california is infact the eith largest economy in the world right behind spain.
@dj4monie - Have you seen Cali's economy lately? Pretty dismal. Not to mention the severe limitations on 2nd amendment rights and exorbitant cost of living. Beautiful place to visit, would never live there.
VIVA CHILE
@mrphillipawood
Also, what are those animals doing wearing crowns? Where did they get that jewelry? The Spaniards?
@mrphillipawood A lot of animals wear crowns when it comes to the (for example) Coat of Arms. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c6/National_Coat_of_arms_of_Denmark.svg/342px-National_Coat_of_arms_of_Denmark.svg.png :p
@mrphillipawood they don't only get internet neutrality but pimpin animals, Im so jelous now!
@mrphillipawood
Two months from now Chile becomes one of the richest countries in the world as all the warez sites will move their servers to chile :)
"ISPs pretty much hate it"
uh not quite.
@MicrosoftOwns "uh not quite."
Good argument. Care to elaborate?
@MicrosoftOwns
Yeah, that's not quite it.
It goes beyond hate. Net neutrality is their Lucifer.
I thought the series of tubes is oredy neutral.
Good for them. Looks like *some*where in the world there are people in power that have level heads about this sort of thing.
@LANmine
Yep, and bring on the censorship as well...
Engadget, don't bee goofs, the net is already neutral - this legislation is to ensure that it is not neutral.
Rights are inalienable items that only God can give, not some lame promise by the apparatchik's of state.
@ROCKandREVIEWcom - Uh, what?
@ROCKandREVIEWcom well you seem to be enjoying your man-given rights pretty well.
@centizen - I know you mean well, but sadly there is no such thing as a man-made right.
@MRCUR - it means "agent of the apparatus"
While here in Engdgt the Google drones frantically giving all their private data away… just don’t tell anything negative about Google-Jesus!
So if we got net neutrality does that mean I could get XBL and PS+ for free? Seems like a gray area to me since the ISPs aren't the ones controlling my access.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget It only says that the ISP cannot control which types of content you have access to, so no. The ISP has nothing to do with Microsoft charging for XBL.
Surprising, but the gov. there has been pushing for internet access even in some of the remote areas. I friend of mine that lives there says there laying out fiber in lots of area. So time to move your servers to Chili and feel the freedom. Hum.. not sure it's that good, just have to dig the the rubble from the last earthquake, and watch for the floods. Guess we all have our quirks to deal with.
@dougbeebe grr. need that grammar/typo checker turned on. :)
Would that also apply to Atacama Desert?
@techlord
Yes, google ALMA. That one and several other big science projects will generate huge data traffic.
Net Neutrality in the USA = Govt control under this socialist President. Think not? Then ask yourself why are they trying hard to redefine broadband as a public utility! If this occurs get ready for taxation and legislation. Any and all public utility falls under govt control. There is an old saying "Do not cutting off the nose to spite the face".
Enjoy your ignorance my fellow americans....it will come back to bite YOU!
@nastro Do you know what socialism is or are you just regurgitating what Papa Limbaugh and Mama Palin taught you?
@nastro You can't even speak english properly are you really from America ?
You don't know what an actual socialist is either and watch way to much Fox News.
Do not feed the troll
@Slvrgun
You do know that the federal govt has the right to regulate all public utilities?
If they cared only about "net neutrality" why try to change broadband into a public utility?
Have you read the news about proposed taxes on the internet?
@nastro wow you really fired up the libtards. I love how they don't bother to refute anything you say. They just talk about your spelling and grammer, throw in some fox hate.
I say engadget if you support the loss of private property rights by all means do us all a favor....move.
@nastro
thats exactly why they are public utilities... not private
Im enjoying how quickly this guy gets downranked
@nastro
Not really. It's a breach of contract. The ISP's job is to move data, and you pay for that. The source pays for that. That's all. By them arbitrarily charging certain "kinds" of data more, they're invalidating all of that. Freely made contracts between free people are the cornerstone of a free society and market. Govt passing laws to protect neutrality are doing their one main function (for once) - protecting the liberties of the people.
@LMLYP Libturds...............Prove me wrong!! Public utilities = Govt control and regulation! If they can regulate, they can tax for reasons that they CAN specify. Prove me wrong!
If you are a private isp and broadband is considered a public utility no matter what you say, the fed can regulate and tax YOU!! Prove me wrong!
@nastro
sweet jesus that honestly doesnt make any sense.
A public utility is funded by the public (government paid for by tax payers) and regulated by the government.
Guess what? government also regulates interstate commerce and corporations! big surprise! everything is taxed. what the hell is your point? did you just realize this or did hearing this shouted to you make you angry?
@nastro Where in the Constitution does it say they have the right to regulate any company?
Hint: Commerce clause is to block interstate tariffs, James Madison said it himself.
