We can't say we know exactly what's going on here, but it does appear that the
HP Slate still lives in all its Windows 7 (and Intel Atom) glory. Yep, the guys at
IDG News spotted the good ol' 8.9-inch HP Slate -- now apparently the Slate 500 -- hanging out on a rather hidden HP.com page. The details are few and far between, but they do seem to coincide with all that we originally
had heard about the tablet -- it runs Windows 7 Home Premium, has
"exclusive" HP software and two cameras. And that's not all, the chaps at IDG
also noticed that the Slate 500 was Energy Star certified, and a listing for the same product on Energy Star's site confirms that it will have a 1.6GHz processor. That
too seems to line up with what we had heard about the Slate having a
1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 CPU. We know, it's all a bit surreal considering we just got word yesterday that HP had filed a trademark on the term
PalmPad, and we figured the Slate may have
seen its day. There's no telling what will happen next, but it sure is looking like a HP Win 7 and WebOS tablet may just live in harmony.
HPalm??
@ndroid for the win
No. iPalm
@ndroid for the win
it's got Windows 7. That means no WebOS, right?
@ndroid for the win Gimme PalmPad plz. kthxbai!
@ndroid for the win
FacePalm
@ndroid for the win
EXCLUSIVE HP SOFTWARE FTW!!!!111
@ndroid for the win
mwuahaha!!
I have stolen your @ symbols for my own personal use \(*o * / )
It may be the case that WebOS replaces the Touchsmart UI component they made to run on top of Windows 7. I can't decide if that would be good or bad.
It combines the software library of Windows 7 with the ease of use of the WebOS for widget-type apps.
But, it means overly bulky hardware for a touch slate that is still underpowered to run Windows 7.
In some cases, it's the best of both, in others the worst. We'll see how or if it pans out. By now I think people have stopped caring so just something would be nice.
I vote this device as the unicorn of the month.
@ndroid for the win
And there are Headphones in the box
@ndroid for the win NahPalm...
@ndroid for the win!!!!!!!!!!
@Plazmic Flame
If you want to call it that, it may as well be unicorn of the year. I mean, at least most of the iPad rumors were TRUE.
@ndroid for the win
But the only thing in the box is headphones!
@Haxagon
That's all you need...
1. It charges itself
2. Instruction manual is yourself
3. Who needs warranty information?
@ndroid for the win
Don't get your hopes up folks. I'll take this with a grain of salt until I see a real thing in review!
@tobsmonster2
The name FacePalm should be the name of their mobile video chat service.
@ndroid for the win coming soon to an HP touchsmart near you: FacePalm video chat
@erik1080 Dammit! You beat me to it! Well played sir, well played.
@ndroid for the win
Thank goodness the rumor that this was cancelled is wrong. Windows 7 Tablet PCs are great! It would be so crippled with WebOS.
@ndroid for the win
It's got a pen and is capable of using OneNote. That's all that this need to differentiate itself from the iPad. This would be great in a college class, business meeting etc. .

Facepalm.jpg
@TinWard No, WebOS will not replace the Touchsmart overlay software on Win7- They may make the Touchsmart software more resemble the WebOS for overall continuity, but WebOS isn't compatible with Win7.
Oh my! It comes with headphones!!
@AWBrisebois Actually it's just a box with headphones. It doesn't even come with the Slate otherwise they would have put that as being included as well.
@Khris
This is true...
@Khris Perhaps these are just headphones with tiny HP slates that dangle off the buds for decoration, kinda like techno-earrings.
@Ducman69
Either way, I'd get a boner.
Come on webos!
I would probably buy it.
WTH ? I thought this was canceled?
@MicrosoftOwns Must you be so ignorant?
@MicrosoftOwns
i actually didnt know it was a rumor. lol
I thought it was legit, and then I saw this, and was like "wut?"
But now i know.
@EggoEspada
Give the guy a break lol finally an article about something he likes. On a serious note, though, I have a laptop running Windows 7 HP, netbook running Windows 7 Starter, and Media Server running Windows Home Media Server 2008 as well as 2 XBox 360s including a new slimmer one and I beta'd W7 so I do like me some MS stuff. Just not on my phone. PS I think this would be better with Windows Compact Embedded 7 at least to compete with Android and WebOS which HP will inevitably use at some point.
You do know this is not a phone right?
I have an iPod touch, nexus one and g1, and a palm pre plus and I think that a tablet like this NEEDS a full OS like windows7...I've been waiting for this thing ever since I heard about it sometime beginning of this year
@ac2913 accept windows 7 isn't a tablet OS, its UI is designed for a mouse/keypad interaction. Yes they may throw a skin on Windows 7 but as soon as you open something like photoshop you are in hell as the whole UI will be wrong. Also I have Windows 7/Xubuntu/Android/Meego-X86 on my netbook and windows 7 is slow as hell when compared to the others (meego takes 14 seconds boot, win 7 takes over 1min 43 sec).
So much (potential) WeOS goodness awaits... Nice
@DaHarder
Jus imagine: WebOS as the quick-boot OS, and Windows 7 available for when a 'real' OS is required - The Best of Both Worlds.
Now Get Those WebOS developers on board already!
@DaHarder
WebOS is supposed to be for the pocketable version though, similar to the Dell Streak, not the bigger netbook class one. =)
@Ducman69
Maybe... Maybe Not - We'll See Soon Enough ;-)
@DaHarder
Would that even be possible? How do you install anything on the Slate? Is there an optical drive?
@webran61 Internet or USB, same as netbooks and ultra-thin laptops w/o an optical drive.
@webran61
Current smartphones, netbooks, most slates/tablets, and utra-portables lack built-in optical drives, and installing apps/applications on them hasn't been an issue.
@DaHarder Ooh I like the way you think! Man that would ROCK!
After certain editors did everything to spread FUD about it being vaporware. *rolleyes*
Rumors estimated it might release half a year after that teaser, and if this is true its about on track.
Can't wait to see pricing and more details!
@Ducman69 Mmmm.... fud.
@Laura June
... ge.
Steve Ballmer is now Happier than ever before.
@iPodPhone
I'm not sure if that's humanly possible.
@iPodPhone
