Samsung's Epic 4G for Sprint looks to score FCC approval
Does this outline of a really awesome phone ring a bell for you? No? Well, let us toss you a hint: it's from Samsung, and it's got WiMAX. That's right -- what you're looking at is a Sammy bearing model number SPH-D700, which we believe to be the phone you know better as the Epic 4G for Sprint. The test report identifies the D700 as a "Cellular/PCS CDMA/EvDO Phone with Bluetooth, WLAN, and WiMAX," so unless Samsung's got another 4G phone for Sprint waiting in the wings, that sounds like pretty damning evidence to us -- especially considering that the ID label document's outline basically matches up with the real device. Interestingly, Sprint has yet to commit to a release date for the Epic, which leads us to wonder whether it was waiting for this to happen... let's hope.

Can the present please be a cockslap to the face? Pleeease.
@liftedngifted1 Come on Engadget. The Captivate has been out for two days now. Where is the full review?
@NikAmi
um...this is about the Epic, not the Captivate. Anyway, the Epic 4G is going to rock. I'm still trying to decide between the Epic and the EVO. Right now I'm leaning toward the Epic.
@benthe1
Dude, don't even bother with the EVO.
The Epic has an awesome QWERTY keyboard, 4-inch screen (which is only .3 inches from the EVO's, and is Super AMOLED to boot), and has the fastest gaming processor on the market in the form of the Cortex A8 Hummingbird (which the iPhone runs a variant of).
The Evo is (once again) crippled by HTC's seemingly prolific ability to fuck up their devices in at least one major way, this time around it being the Evo STUPIDLY limited to 30 FPS, when the Google standard for Android devices is 60 FPS.
@r34p3r The 30FPS is not at all a problem. There's plenty of reasons I'd choose the Epic 4G over the EVO but the 30fps cap that's there to make HDMI work without issue is definitely not one of them especially since it also saves battery life. 30FPS on a tiny screen is very smooth-unless you're testing it side by side with something doing 60FPS you won't notice.
I wish the Epic 4G had Sense UI though, if only because the virtual keyboard that comes with android normally is a piece of crap.
@NikAmi
Not only is that out but you can tether it too. Along with the best desktop syncing on a android phone. Also works for all galaxy s pines

Waiting for EPIC 4G. Definitely my next phone. My contract ends in August and Epic's release timing cannot be better if they do it August.
I checked out Captivate at the store and the screen is just gorgeous. One has to see it in person to really appreciate it. Am loving it!!
Sprint is going to have to have its first really good quarter in many years this quarter. The price of sprints stock is all based on confidence of it being able to turn around from the steady loss of many customers for several years now. Shit is gona go through the roof when quarterly reports come out on july 28th. Right now they are trading at 4.70$ compared to verizon and at&t at around 30 and t-mobile who has less subs at over 12$ last number I heard on the evo was 300,000 a few weeks ago. I just picked up 4000 shares, wish me luck and maybe get in there yourselves ;)
@robotlove
That's a good investment. I would know, I'm a millionaire.
Whoopy
a little late to the party, but makes up for it IMO
Cool phone, esp. The keyboard aaahhhhh!!!!
Wow, sprint has 2 limited market 4g networks?
Easily the most EPIC phone of the year (Gingerbread lineup excluded).
*Amber alert*
An Evo has run away. It is extremely distraught and unstable. Has an extreme fear to 4g sliders. Please contact you local PD.
what's the date?
@cdkb
Word is early Aug
@evilecho
The *extremely* hypothetical, but also *extremely* likely date is early August.
They could have a bunch of stock that was just awaiting FCC certification and do a surprise launch this weekend too. I would guess if they have a bunch of stock, they'd do a launch next week, on account of the Droid 2 being pushed up.
@cr3amy
But early August makes sense, as long as they beat the Droid 2 to the punch
@evilecho Let's all hope it's early August because I can't wait to get my hands on this!!
FINALLY!!
Im headed back to sprint very soon.
Okay, hopefully we'll get a release date soon !!!!!
Come on Epic 4G!
I want this phone so bad that I loaded android on my TP2 to get ready.
Thank freakin god. I've been on a G1 since the G1 was new and it is quickly deteriorating. I would have gone with a Droid 2 or Droid X, but the monthly price for Verizon is $30 to $40 more and you get less minutes.
Sprint's pricing is on par with T-Mobile, I'm gettin a physical keyboard, Super AMOLED, Android 2.1 (probably root if 2.2's not there quick enough), and I'm not paying $120/month for it!
Hell. Yes.
I thought they came out already
Bout damn time!
As an Evo 4G owner, I must say that I am a bit jealous. Don't get me wrong. I love my Evo. It truly is a wonderful phone and ever since the update, the battery drainage has improved a good deal. However, I do miss the physical keyboard. With this phone and the Evo on Sprint's Network, the Video calling will take off even bigger.
You mean there will be 10 video calls instead of 5? Video calling on android is a joke.
@Starfleet Captain
I was thinking about the same thing but EVO with Sense is much better than Samsung's TouchWiz. Only thing epic is better than evo is the screen.
@HAL2000
Really, and do you really think that video calling on the iPhone 4 is better? Only having to be connected to wifi is the Joke.. LOL and thats when you can get a signal...
The Evo has been out for a little over a month and are still selling like hotcakes out of the gate. Video calling on Android will gradually pick up as more and Android phones with front facing cameras are released.
@larciel
Agreed. Sense is the best Custom OEM UI for ndroid on the market now and works as smoothly as Vanilla Android.
@larciel
and the image processor on epic is better than evo
@Starfleet Captain
Wow he didn't even mention the iPhone, no one did.
@tobsmonster2
He / She didn't have to. Read the comment, now check his / her comment history.
Heck yeah baby, come to momma!!
Epic 4g evo4g sprint what's next? Sprint needs a blackberry with 4g
I've heard sprint is trying to get a touch screen blackberry with wimax by christmas.
Epic fail!
lets hope it gets here before august, i just can't wait that long!
GALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXYYYYYYYYY EPIC!
Finally!! Some Epic 4G news. Been waiting for a while for anything. Please give me another preview or something soon. Why have there been no reviews for the Captivate or Vibrant? I'm not sensing any Samsung Galaxy S superphone love.
