Sony Ericsson concept phone is as clever as it is unreal
Looking for some innovation to go with your porridge this morning? How about this fan-made flip phone concept that pivots vertically and horizontally? You can use it as a standard old clamshell, with the lower of the two displays acting as your number pad, or you can rotate it down to pair the screens into one snazzy widescreen panel. That's all there really is to it, but it seems like such an ingenious idea to us -- maintaining the slimline dimensions that some think are crucial to phones, while offering the generous screen size that we all want. Hit the source link to see more of this "Sony Ericsson" FH concept.

This is awesome!!
wow thats realy smart!
i bet its going to be made soon.
Hire this guy NOW Sony.
@jahkamren That looks pretty good for a fan-made concept, but I rather see the HTC 1 become reality than this..
@jahkamren
I dont think the idea can work. Are you telling me that in clamshell orientation the display will not be protected by a bezel on 2 sides? That would make the display extremely fragile. And if you add a strip to add protection, the display would become very divided in landscape mode.
@jahkamren
It is indeed awesome as a concept, in fact if you go check the link, it shows that the two pieces can detach also!
It is however, just a concept. As another poster stated, the screen would require a bezel at the fourth side too, which kinda rain down on the whole jointed-screen thing.
Also, Nokia had a phone with a similar double-flip joint system, the N93, and it was rather heavy.
@Ryzvonusef
The best part of waking up, is vaporware in your cup!
looks awesome, but looks clunky at the same time
i thought flip phones were dead already
Why is it whenever I see a dual-screen device I am reminded of THAT device. I can't even bring myself to say the name.
The courier is dead! Long live the courier!
Julio Iglesias would sad: Fragile
@roba3000 you mean Sting
@eddib yes, together of course ;)
This is genius. I'm hoping the execution of the idea doesn't screw it up.
@Rickreation
It won't be executed, its a fan made concept.
@Rickreation
it's hard to make the screen start at the edge of the device, if it weren't we would be seeing a lot of screens without bezels.
also I don't see it improving usability much more than having some decent controls on the flipside.
Widescreen? It looks pretty square to me...
Japan already has production dual-flip phones.
Nice work, nonetheless.
at least it runs andriod
@Icebird
Android? Look at the bottom of the top screen; "Safari", "iPod" ...
Since when did Apple start licencing iOS to competitors...
@ulwur
Where are you reading this exactly?
Looks like android to me...
Android notification bar, Android chat application, Android YouTube applications, general Android interface...
Plus the fan probably chose to run his "device" on because Android is so customisable.
@petehix
He likely went to the source and looked at the other renders of the phone. A couple of images not only show iOS but Windows Mobile as well. Here's a shot showing the other two OS:

This concept is cool as hell but the colors are ugly as....
That's a remake of the Motorola MPX!
@illogict That's the first thing I thought of, too.

so fat!
Is it just me or is this design just not working?
The horiontal hinge simply has no function in this concept.
Is it just me or can this concept just not work?
The horizontal hinge has no function in my eyes. (Because there is no connection betwenn upper and lower screen.)
@user47alpha Arg. Now both posts are there...
@user47alpha
It flips up along the silver hinge, and twists around the orange knob. Only one end of the hinge actually connects the two halves. The mechanism is similar to the Samsung Alias 2's hinge system:

@user47alpha
In case my explanation was unclear, here's an image showing the pivot point:

@wrathkind Yay... 2 shots... 3 OSs.... What's up with the Android, iPhone, Windows 6.5 mash up!?
Yeah Ericsson come back!.. but I think it will break easily
Nice design, but when made for the real world a plethora of problems will be found...
But hey, SE makes and sells the Xperia purity, them making this wouldn't be too surprising
Only problem I see is that you first have to open it as a flip phone then rotate the top section down. So multiple moves to get to where you want to be if you want the landscape mode.
We have an Samsung Alias and two Alias II phones in our house atm and they use a simular design that opens as a flip phone vertically or as a full keyboard landscape mode depending on which way you flip the top section, but in one motion.
Surprisingly they are very durable and we have never had a problem with any of them so far, even with the 3year old Alias. So I don't think the design would be any weaker than any other phone out there. Certainly not as damage prone as full screen touch phones are.
And what about getting really crazy with some Rubik's Magic Puzzle mechanism combined with LCD touchscreens ?
That would really blow my mind !

I love how he's used Android, WinMo and iOS screenshots...
Based on a similar concept developed by Psion around 2000. They had an idea for a mobile device with a 2-3 part screen.
Clever design.
While it does look cool, It will annoy the user in real life scenarios
Sony Ericsson Never mind spending all your time & money on concepts until you start releasing up to date firmwares to your phones (x10 still running 1.6) & new phones you release fewer phones than Nokia & that is saying something.
PLEASE Release a 3.7" touchscreen running Android 2.2 with 8 megapixel & xenon flash, PLEASE. Sony ericsson & Nokia are the only phone companies who have put a xenon flash on a smartphone (except motorola xt701/xt720 but this is poor)
That big-ass nub sticking out would be a huge problem. Just think about the slight curve on the back of a recent phone and how much complaining it caused. This thing would get caught on everything.
Sony Ericsson Nutcracker.....
Finnaly, my very own pokedex
@LightAce That's what even I was thinking, make this red and black and it looks just like Pokedex.
That joint looks easy to break
while I was in japan, i saw many flip phones that folded both vertically and horizontally...but the screens didnt actually meet when folded horizontally, just the frame. but still, the core design isn't anything new
So to accept a call, you would need to go open it up and press accept button, then go back to clamshell to hold it up to your ears?
@istical
It only opens up vertically (clamshell-style); you can't open it horizontally at all (landscape mode). Presumably, when there's an incoming call, the act of flipping it open will automatically accept the call, just like most (all?) clamshells. The only way to access landscape mode on this device is to flip it open vertically, and then twist the upper half 180˚.
