Token multitouch screen shows us the future of DJing, today (video)
Think you know multitouch surfaces? Think again. We've just come across a video demo of the Token multitouch, erm, pedestal, which seems to have come straight from the future. A clear sheet of glass that beams out video from your computer and accepts touch inputs in return, the Token concept has been designed by a chap named Rodrigo hailing out of Chile. We know it uses a rear projector for its video, but other construction details are scarce at this point; what's really special here, however, is the way he combines it with a Traktor Pro controller titled Emulator, turning a few intelligent finger swipes into a kickass light-and-sound show. See it on video after the break.

that looks fucking sweet !!!
@Nanosman1994
Parts of this look exactly like TouchOSC for iPad, which I've been using on and off for a couple of months now with Traktor Pro. I love the glass projection though, I think I might have to copy this idea :)
@Nanosman1994
Yeah, I agree. Serato ani't got ish on this!!!!
@Nanosman1994
am I the only person in the world who still prefers plain old physical buttons?
@rekit
no, I only recently (3yrs ago) got into using mk3 1000's. It feels like cheating. Now im moving towards software to save some space. Im pretty sure that is cheating.
@Nanosman1994 yes in deed ! ill take at least one
@rekit yes, I think so...
@Graham J TouchOSC uses the jazzmutant lemur as its main skin.
jazzmutant has been innovating the multitouch screen scene for a decade
it's a shame their shit is so expensive. I wouldn't have gotten 2 iPads with touchOSC otherwise
...Yes, I'm a DJ. and Yes I'd trade my two iPads and a very long bj for that set up above
@rekit
Not at all. Although i think this design is pretty cool looking. Would fit perfectly in a club where you dont do too much audio tweaking during a preformance. But, serious DJ's will pass on this. There is no way you can get the control you need with virtual dials and knobs. Its just not the same thing... imo
Yeh, not bad! Not bad at all.............
i want.
I want one thats sick.
I would guess the table is using a infrared sensing camera next to the Beamer and infrared diodes in the plastic surface to emit a signal on touch. ( ~maybe wiimote )
That is seriously badass!

He is using the build and software from this tutorial.
@SpiralGear No he isn't... that's a pedestal... not a box
@johnvillar Same concept, rear projection, FTIR, modified webcam...
What, no "DJing is bullshit" and "but the turntables!" comments yet?
@whiskers ...you really want'em that bad?
@whiskers
Are you wishing for those comments? You did, after all, post at 11:11
Wow, amazing. Truly amazing.
I was one first people find this video last week. This is really turning viral. But looks really cool. I want that screen! The deejay software and touch is nothing new.
I am not a DJ, but wont it be easier to quickly push buttons and move switches and sliders if they are actual physical sliders etc?
@spawn782 it takes getting used to, like any physical UI
@spawn782
You completely missed the point
@revlayle cool, agreed..Like I said I am not a DJ but was just wondering..but it does look cool.
@spawn782
That us a big if...
You would have to emulate physical controls for every piece of DJ software out there. Including the many incarnations of Traktor
This kicks ass
@Blakberi
That IS a big if... darn it
@Blakberi Good dj software screen layouts give you all the important stuff on the main screen anyway. Traktor is nice, but im a Virtual DJ kind of guy...
Serato>Traktor but this is cool!
WANT
wow that looks SICK!!!! SO sick that it needs some medicine and FAST!
I'm going to open a series of physiotherapy clinics specializing in treating RSI related injuries from people who use devices like this for extended periods of time.
Thank you Minority Report for the gold mine!
Could this this used in the medical field big time!
Lol touchOSC does this....
and while the crowd is going nuts, then the music suddenly stops looks to the dj booth...

Better than Microsoft surface in my eyes
He will LOVE this:

Reminds me of the computers in the new Deus Ex game coming out.
Any details on the availability and cost of the Töken concept screen?
Even though another commenter linked to a DIY tutorial, the tutorial device required IR LED's taped at one-inch intervals on all four sides of the screen. It looks like this Töken concept screen is only connected to the stand on the bottom part of the sides of the glass with no LED's along the outside of the glass in sight. However this screen is produced, it seems more professional.
@trunksy I am certain that it is using the concepts from the maximum PC article which if I remember correctly is about a year old at this point. The FTIR effect does not require the IR LEDs to be placed all the way around the surface, only that they put enough infrared light into the edge of the plexiglass panel. This method also solves a problem with heat generated in the cabinet design of the maximum PC article in that the projector and modified web cam are not enclosed within the cabinet.
Whats the name of the first track?
@ryaneezy Timmy Vegas & Bad Lay-dee "Another Dimension"
Thanks shazam!
@ryaneezy
Never mind I found it. It's Another Dimension byTimmy Vegas & Bad Lay-dee.
It's really a cool song. Check it out :D
The future is NOW
@halfchuck STHU DORK
That is pretty friggin cool
I believe he is using an a Front LLP (laser) system instead of the FTIR (LED's around the outsides) to detect the touch. This would explain how he is able to have nothing around most of the outer edges. It is likely the laser and camera is in the same location as the rear projector (which can be seen a couple times throughout the video. I'm researching his methods more because I would like to build one, the "inside a box" version in the tutorial posted earlier is okay... but... the version depicted in this video is much more interesting. I have no interest in using it for DJ however... but would this be a conversational piece if it was my home computer or what...
@CaptainTaco If you look carefully you can see an artifact of light generated in the lower portion of the panel, in the supports, and because there is no heat build up behind the touch panel, there doesn't need to be near as much IR light put into the edge of the panel to counter the ambient IR level inside an enclosed cabinet. Either way this is still a cool display and it has renewed my interest in building my own multitouch system...
Meh, the DJ'ing can be done already... that's Virtual DJ, I used a similar setup on an HP Touchsmart 2 YEARS ago... Wee... The Future is Now... Meh... Do some research author...
