Blizzard's short story series continues with Vol'jin: The Judgment

Patch 4.1 is all trolls, trolls, trolls. You know what? I love the trolls. With the emergence of the Zandalari trolls as stewards of a new troll empire, the rearming of the Gurubashi and Amani tribes, and Vol'jin's staunch opposition to the direction of the troll peoples of Azeroth, we've got a lot on our plate in terms of lore.

Blizzard's leader short story series continues with "The Judgment," written by Brian Kindregan, which chronicles Vol'jin from his years as a young, would-be shadow hunter to his exodus with the orcs across the sea. The series has been a success with WoW lore buffs, adding to the various faction leaders' histories and canon. Hit the jump for a spoiler-filled summary, and be sure to read the whole ordeal.

The story begins with a younger Vol'jin and his friend Zalazane together out looking for trouble. They eventually take part in the Judgment, where the Loa of the Darkspears test worthy would-be shadow hunters. If a troll passes the Judgment, he becomes a formidable ally of the Loa and a shadow hunter. If he fails, he succumbs to their primal might.

After a run-in with a particularly large raptor, we learn of Vol'jin's visions of orcs and Garrosh; his instructions from his father; and the aspirations of his then-friend Zalazane, who players know as the powerful witch doctor who forced Vol'jin's people from their homes and imprisoned many of them under his powerful magic.

The past that Vol'jin shares with Zalazane is a great read with a cool twist -- and as usual, it's quality writing from the short story authors. Knowing about Vol'jin's premonitions and sight into the future makes the events of Cataclysm and the tension between Garrosh and Vol'jin shine in a new light. Finally, players are given more substance behind Vol'jin and his days before being leader of the Darkspear.

Give it a read, especially if you're into the trolls and troll lore, since patch 4.1 is full of good troll stuff in general. Check out the full story.
