Amazon and Apple close out the 'app store' lawsuit

After many months of legal bickering over whether Amazon's use of the term "app store" somehow undermined Apple's own thriving digital marketplace, Cupertino has decided to drop the case entirely. Reuters reports that the case was officially dismissed today by US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton after both companies confirmed that they wanted to drop the case.

The original lawsuit was filed in early 2011, and neither side seemed to budge very much on their positions regarding use of the terminology. However, despite the fact that the decision to abandon the case was entirely Apple's, the company's statement on the outcome is that of victory. "We no longer see a need to pursue our case. With more than 900,000 apps and 50 billion downloads, customers know where they can purchase their favorite apps," Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement.
