Call it the Surface Player: Why Microsoft needs an iPod touch competitor
details
Maybe I'm only saying this because the Zune HD never got the love it deserved, but Microsoft should come out with a Windows Phone-based competitor to the iPod touch (i.e. a smartphone without the phone part). Why? Because it would help establish Windows Phone as a viable platform. Challenging the iPod touch isn't going to tip the balance for Microsoft all on its own, but having one could make things a little easier (and it probably would not upset Microsoft's OEM partners as much as doing a... Canceling a zune pass subscription is an ungodly nightmare.
details
(This is about the zune pass service, which is not listed in gdgt's database.)
A few days ago my brother signed up for a free 2-week trial for the zune pass service. My mom called me in the room asking me to help her cancel it before they billed her. xbox.com instructs you to go to billing.microsoft.com, sign in, click on the service, and click "CANCEL MY SERVICE." we go to said website, and the link says "HOW TO cancel my service." We click the link, and it directs us to the zune site.
Why did... Read more →

What about Samsung making Zune music devices...?
details
As a loyal Zune Pass subscriber and a Zune 120 owner I was a little upset when Microsoft announced that they would no longer be producing Zune hardware. I understand why they are doing it they are way behind in the smartphone race, however I just don’t see why they would abandon music fans like this. No matter what you say until a Windows Phone 7 device has a battery that can last as long as a dedicated music player can those of us who listen to music a great deal and don’t want to be stuck... Zune Pass to start a streaming only option @ 9.99
details
Currently you can get a Zune pass monthly for $14.99, 3 months for $44.97, and yearly for $149.90. I just recieved an email from Zune stating:
"We want to let you know about important changes that are coming to Zune® Music Pass in the United States.
On October 3, we will be discontinuing the $14.99 Zune Music Pass plan and introducing a new version of Zune Music Pass. After October 3, the $14.99 plan will not be available to new subscribers. However, because you are a current subscriber, you can... Read more →

Four moves Microsoft could make in mobile
details
While landing Nokia as a partner for Windows Phone a few months ago was a huge win for the platform, it's clear that Microsoft still has its work cut out for it if it wants to gain a solid foothold in the ultracompetitive world of mobile operating systems. There are plenty of things they can do to improve the OS itself and to better market it, but if they really want to win in mobile they need to accept that we live in a multiplatform world now. And it's not just that there are... Read more →

Podcasts, how do they work?
details
No really, how do they work on the Zune software? I've just moved my podcast folder as I'm juggling drives around, and now it is insisting on re-downloading a huge chunk of my podcasts, creating a bunch of dupe entries (which I still have from my initial migration) which I can't delete. The podcast behaviour is actually pretty annoying. Does anyone have a link to a resource that would help me make sense of how it works?

As a Microsoft fan bordering on fanboy it is extremely depressing to look at what the company has done and imagine what they can do.
details
Zune HD is a wonderfully designed hardware proving they can make beautiful and functional hardware even as a software company. The Xbox 360 is a commercial success and while it does not show off their hardware chops thanks to some missteps (I am looking at you RROD) it still shows that Microsoft is still wonderful at software because one of the biggest reasons Xbox 360 tops other (in my opinion) is the easy to use and functional UI along with an excellent web experience in Xbox Live. #wp7 #zune Boxing up iOS devices for disposal...!
details
Never thought this day would come, and nor in the last few years did I think there would be any chance of doing so, because no other PMP maker seemed to hold playcounts / track-state syncing in any particular regard. After Microsoft decided it was important too, for a long time I was staring from across the Atlantic at the potential of Zune. And now it's fully here, I gave Windows Phone 7 with Zune a spin and have decided it's sufficiently worthwhile to dive fully into it - so have... Read more →

RIP Zune?
details
Paul Thurrott, writer of all things Microsoft, posted a brief blurb that Zune is no more according to his sources: "And what about Zune? Although both companies talked up virtually all Windows Phone-based services, Zune was conspicuously missing—both in discussions from both Elop and Ballmer and on a global reach marketing slide that was created by both companies. My sources tell me that the Zune brand is on the way out and that all Zune products and services will be moved into other... Read more →

I've just got my zune and I'm having some problems with the facebook/twitter apps as well as the piano app.
details
the problem with the piano app is that it just doesn't sync to my zune, it says "syncing Piano" but it never gets added to the "just added" list and it's not on my zune. Facebook Never loads up my notifications when I click on that Icon. it just stays loading forever. Twitter never loads my timeline. It did once when I first used it, but since then I get a message that it can't be updated due to external issues. any ideas anybody? I'm gonna try to delete...

What's next for Zune?
details
* * * This piece appeared originally in the gdgt newsletter. Sign up at gdgt.com/newsletter/ if you're not already receiving it! * * * I'm guessing not many people have had this on their mind lately, but since the launch of Windows Phone 7 I've been wondering what will happen to Zune, Microsoft's oft-maligned line of portable media players (make your jokes now so we can get them out of the way, ok?). It's easy to dismiss Zune as a punchline, but whatever Microsoft does... Read more →

Just had an odd problem with my Zune HD, thought I'd share in case someone else encounters a similar issue.
details
Was listening to music yesterday when all of a sudden all of the buttons on it stopped working. Music was still playing, but I couldn't get the screen to come on and so I couldn't pause, skip tracks, adjust the volume, etc. I tried holding the power button to get it to shut down, but that didn't work, and connecting it into to my PC didn't do anything either. I ended up just letting it completely charge down overnight. Tried connecting it to my PC this morning but nothing... Read more →

Finally at long last I picked up a Zune HD last month and I have to say the build quality is amazing!
details
The interface never bogs down and is a pleasure to use, add in Zune pass and I've got my perfect jukebox. I know support is probably going to wane with WP7 coming out, but even if that be the case, as a stand alone device with a focus on music it's pretty much perfect to me. When I switch over to WP7 I think I'll relegate the Zune HD to in car and house jukebox.
