Google's Chrome OS — which runs the Samsung Series 3 ChromeBox — has improved over the past year, but it's still largely a web-based operating system with far more limitations than Windows, OS X or other standard desktop operating systems. Despite the ChromeBox's low price, unless you're curious about Chrome OS, or are looking for an easy-to-maintain computer that will be used solely for web-based activities, you'll be better off with a standard desktop PC.

The Samsung Series 3 Chromebox is a nice alternative to a cheap nettop that you're buying just to get on the Web, especially for that relative of yours that "needs to get on the Facebook." If it came with HDMI in the box, it would be a home run hitter. As it is, it's a decent utility player.

The attractive Samsung Chromebox Series 3 desktop turns Google's web-based Chrome operating system into a decent option for low-cost desktop PC shoppers, so long as you're happy with shortcomings such as low storage and an OS that's still teething.

If you want a Chrome device, then the Chromebox is a decent enough machine. It feels a bit slow - it's certainly not as enjoyable to use as our Windows-based desktop and it's obviously a lot more limited.

In a lot of ways the Chromebox makes more sense for Google than the Chromebook; it provides a speedy, well-designed and novel way of getting online quickly with enough additional functionality to make it a fine second computer.
