Sony Playstation 3 Disc Error
details
My PS3 had suddenly stopped booting and have started showing disc error. It earlier was going in to a perennial software update and then was getting stuck in the middle. later even that is gone. I have tried all the quick fix available on net, since I couldn't make it work I finally submitted it to the sony service station. Now the service team guys have called be back to inform that PS3 does not get repaired but would be changed directly and I would need to pay half the price of a new PS3 to... Read more →

NBA 2K15 Platform Discussion
details
As a faithful Playstation devotee for the past eighteen years, I find myself interested in buying the new PS4 despite my waning attention to video gaming in recent years.
However, I find myself figuratively salivating after seeing the gorgeous screen caps for NBA 2K15.
Sound Off:
1 - What do you think is the best platform for this game?
2 - Would I sacrifice too much (e.g., graphics, game play, experience, etc.) if I were to just purchase the game for PS3 which I already have?
[This was my first...

Operation Finish all the Games, September 2014
details
So I'm a few days late, but maybe it's perfectly timed: Super Smash Bros. 3DS is out today! We'll probably be picking it up soon. Hopefully it won't distract me too much from my resolution to...

[FINISH ALL THE GAMES]
Once more, here are the rules:
  1. I have to finish or beat at least one game a month. That basically means reaching whatever counts as an ending to the story mode, usually prompting a credits scroll.
  2. Side-quests and...

Tomorrow Destiny arrives for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Reviewers started receiving their copies over the weekend and the servers went online today. Of course, that means no day-one reviews tomorrow, so gamers will be picking the game up tomorrow based on the Bungie name, the pre-release news and trailers and of course, the hype.
Bungie explained their decision... Read more →

The rules, if you didn't see the previous posts:
  1. Beat or finish one game a month. That usually means completing the main story mode and getting the credits to roll.
  2. Side-quests don't need to be finished. That way leads to madness.
  3. I can finish more than one game a month, but it doesn't...

Operation Finish all the Games, June 2014
details
http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/lampbane/135127/63934/63934_300.jpg
The point of this project was to try and reduce my games backlog, which goes back at least 10 years for some games. Unfortunately, new games continue to come out, and plenty of retailers (Steam, GOG.com, Humble Bundle) keep having great sales that I can't ignore, making my task almost Sisyphean. But I'm not giving up just yet, not after I've come so far!
As always, the basic rules of this quest:
  1. Finish or beat one game a month....

[FINISH ALL THE GAMES]
So I've just wrapped up the fifth month of trying to plow through my backlog. I'm actually quite proud of myself, though not as much as I will when I've been doing this for a year, or have finished up my backlog, whichever comes first.
A quick recap of what this is all about:
  1. I have to finish or beat at least one game a month. That...

What are the worst games you ever played?
details

ET may go down as one of the worst games ever made. If it's not at the top of every worst-of list, it's usually in the top three. It wasn't considered a bad game because of the era it was released, it was just a downright bad game. Critics slammed it for it's controls and called it a repetitive game. The game was so bad it's been long rumored that Atari dumped every remaining game... Read more →

Today ends month three of my little project (month two for those who decided to join in after my first post). A shorter month, but that's no excuse not to try. How did I do?
First, for those just joining us, a little recap of the "rules," what little there are:
  1. Beat or finish one game a month. This means doing what it takes to complete the main story mode and prompt a credits scroll.
  2. Side-quests and post-credit content are not...

How close do you sit in front of the TV when gaming?
details
http://i.imgur.com/4h1lCzl.jpg
I've been playing a lot of BF4 lately and had an interesting realization. I sit entirely way too close to the television when I play games. I think my original justification for it is that I wear glasses, so I need to sit closer to see. Except I wear glasses when I play, so it makes that point moot.
Anyway, I sit about 3 to 5 feet away from the 32" TV that I use for gaming. I'm sure that it's not good for my eyes, but hey. How close do you find yourself sitting in...

Taking a page from our database czar Kris, I thought that a good way to encourage us to finish a game a month would be to have a place where we could talk about what we're playing. Today marks the release of the survival horror game Outlast on PS4 (finally!) and I thought this would be a great place to start. It's a free download if you're a PS+ subscriber, or $20 if you aren't and I'm going to imagine it isn't... Read more →

Pathmaking in Games
details
I am working on a Master's thesis in architecture and am interested in pathmaking and pathfinding as they are implemented in the virtual worlds of gaming. There appear to be two basic approaches to both: manual (i.e., designed) and procedural (i.e., algorithmic like roguelikes). My goal is to apply strategies garnered from an analysis of these topics to an architectural design (e.g., museum or game design company offices). Does anyone know of any good resources I could read or search out?
Thanks!...

Favorite games from 2013
details
We've had some exciting gaming discussions here in the forums over the past year. We talked about our initial impressions of the new consoles, if Nintendo can survive, and even what games we're all playing. As the year wraps up I thought it'd be fun to get a good idea of the communities favorite games to come out in 2013. This serves as a great way to check out games you may have missed or forgotten about.

PlayStation Plus: when will the other shoe drop?
details
http://i.imgur.com/LtCqrjV.jpg
For a while now I've had friends touting the wonders of having a PlayStation Plus account: the free games, the discounts. But I was never willing to up the $50, so I passed, since I actually do have plenty of games to play already.
However, Amazon offering PlayStation Plus for $30 on Black Friday? That was too good a deal to pass up, so my boyfriend and I each bought codes: we redeemed one for now, and we'll redeem the other next year. Yesterday, Best Buy also had a... Read more →

The Sims 3 DLC and Update Installation PS3 FIX?
details
When launching the game it says it needs to update, which completes successfully. It then says it needs to install game data and DLC to run. The install process will get all the way to %100 and then permanently freeze the game. The console is still running fine and I can the frozen install at any time. There is plenty of space for content on my PS3. I have tried deleting the game data and starting from the beginning with no luck. My PS3 system is up to date.

RE: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One: Which game console to buy this holiday
details
Today, Ben Gilbert posted on article in which he gives his opinion on which console to buy this holiday season. I realize that everyone has their opinion and since Ben shared his, I would like to share mine.
To be quite frank, the PS4 and the Xbox One are not worth the money right now. Here's why I believe so:
  • Both consoles are missing out key features that were promised and are waiting on updates in the "future" . In some cases, these "next-gen" consoles lack basic functionality that their...

Gaming headsets that are PS3 / PS4 (*and* potentially Xbox One) compatible?
details
For the longest time, I've been using a Tritton AX 720 with my PS3.
http://media.engadget.com/img/product/18/e3l/tritton-ax720-t7t-800.jpg
I have a rather bizarre issue with it. Whenever I turn it off (mostly on purpose after a gaming session, but sometimes on accident if my foot bumps the amplifier), it's ridiculously hard to turn it on again. Basically, it will turn on for a second, everything will light up, and then it will turn off again.
It's really obnoxious!
So, I'm in the market for a new... Read more →
