Last month the Coleco Chameleon showed up at Toy Fair promising a taste of retro-gaming glory. But those promises have come to naught after a non-start to its Kickstarter and numerous accusations regarding faked prototypes. Today the Chameleon suffers another blow as Coleco Holdings, the company with the rights to the Coleco name and properties, has terminated its association with RetroVGS and the Chameleon project.

Last month RetroVGS's Coleco Chameleon made a big splash at Toy Fair, promising retro-gaming goodness from such storied systems as the SNES, the Intellivision and the Atari 2600. The Kickstarter was set to begin on February 26, but instead the company made an announcement that evening via Facebook stating that the crowdfunding process would be put on an indefinite delay. RetroVGS says the Kickstarter campaign was put on hold in order to finalize the prototype and lock down additional content for the system. However, an accompanying image was removed from the Facebook post after criticism that the Chameleon may not work as advertised.

The Coleco Chameleon from Retro Video Game Systems won't land on Kickstarter until the end of the month. However, it did hit Toy Fair earlier this week to give the public a little taste of its retro-gaming goodness and score a few deals. And score it did, landing the rights to the Atari 2600 library. That's over 300 games, as well an option for the company to develop new games based on all that classic IP. (Update: We've gotten in touch with Atari; see comments at the end of this post.)

  • Coleco Chameleon retro game console heads to Kickstarter

Coleco's Chameleon console promises a true old-school gaming experience. That means its games will look and feel like the titles you might have played decades ago, and they absolutely won't release wallet-thinning DLCs. They're not computers in a console's body like modern models. Its developer, Retro Video Game Systems, Inc., plans to release new games (in cartridge form, of course) by indie developers and SNES titles ported for the system. But before that happens it still has to raise funds via Kickstarter, beginning on February 26th, 2016.

Rantmedia Games has a knack for rekindling childhood gaming memories -- see its uncannily accurate Vectrex Regeneration as proof. We're glad to hear, then, that the developer wants to revive our nostalgia once more with its upcoming ColecoVision app. The crowdfunded project has all the necessary licensing to recreate both Coleco's system and 20-plus classic games, promising as authentic a Zaxxon experience as you'll get without the hardware in hand. Rantmedia also hopes to foster a competitive streak with leaderboards, achievements and player challenges. Should the company reach its $250,000 funding goal, it expects to release an iOS version of the software by March. The firm also wants to target Android, the PlayStation Vita and desktops, although additional OS support will depend on feedback. Whatever platforms the ColecoVision app supports, it's clear that anyone with a soft spot for Choplifter will want to chip in $10 or more at the source link.

  • "Handheld" arcade games hit eBay

Retro Treasures points us to a set of "handheld" arcade games (more like tabletop) up for auction on eBay. Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaxian, and Dracula have been preserved from the dark era of 1981 and are fully operational, supporting two players simultaneously and running off those not-necessarily-rechargeable things called C batteries. The auctioneer has several other tabletop arcade games on the block, including Donkey Kong and Q-Bert. The prices seem a little steep for some, but sometimes nostalgia knows no limits.[Via Retro Treasures]

Our good pals at Joystiq have just spotted the new Coleco Sonic Handheld, available now for pre-order at Target's website for the price of a single piece of paper with U.S. Grant's gorgeous bearded visage on it. It doesn't appear to be the retro-cool system that Coleco alluded to late last year, but rather an all-in-one device loaded with 20 orginal Sega 8-bit games that include Sonic Triple Trouble, Fantasy Zone, Super Columns, Alex Kidd in High Tech World, Ecco the Dolphin and a whole bunch of others that Joystiq has listed over on their site. So Coleco fanboys, slide on over there to get the full list.[Via Joystiq]

Target is now accepting online pre-orders ($49.99) for "Coleco Sonic Handheld." Could this be the resurrection system Coleco hinted at almost a year ago? It's doubtful; instead of ColecoVision hits, this all-in-one portable is packed with classic Sega titles.
