'Crysis Remastered' trailer proves the Switch can run 'Crysis'
Back when Crysis debuted in 2007, it was nigh-on unfathomable that you’d be able to play the notoriously power-hungry game pretty much anywhere. Crytek is releasing Crysis Remastered on Nintendo Switch and other platforms. A gameplay trailer (via Polygon) shows it in action on the hybrid console, and considering the hardware limitations of Switch compared with more powerful systems, it looks pretty impressive.

50 EA games going offline due to GameSpy shutdown
EA's efforts to transition its GameSpy-based games have been in vain, after the publisher revealed 50 of its titles are going offline once the matchmaking service shuts down. Not only is it a big list of games, but it includes casualties like Battlefield 2142 for PC and Mac, and Star Wars: Battlefront on PC and PS2. Other games on the list include Battlefield 2 (PC), Command and Conquer 3 (PC and Mac), C&C Generals (PC and Mac), Red Alert 3 (PC and Mac), Crysis (PC), Crysis: Wars (PC), Crysis 2 (PC), Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (PC and Mac), Neverwinter Nights (PC, Mac and Linux) Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC and Mac), and Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PC and PS2). EA's service site has the full list of affected games, all of which lose their online services on June 30. "Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time," EA said on its service page. The company noted some of the games retain sizable audiences, and it's "investigating community-supported options" in a bid to retain online functionality. However: "Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don't have anything to announce." If EA doesn't come through, users may turn to services like GameRanger, which provides server support for some of the games in question. However, for many games it'll likely be so long and thanks for all the online fun soon after GameSpy's services go dark on May 31. [Image: EA]
Crysis 8K resolution hack offers a peek at the next decade of gaming
Want to know what you'll be playing on your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Two in the next decade? Take a look at K-putt's Crysis 3 resolution hack. His tweak to the first-person shooter's main Windows program file lets the game's visuals run at up to a very wide 8K (specifically, 8,000 x 3,333). That's about 13 times more pixels than you'd see in a 1080p image, folks. The results very nearly speak for themselves -- screenshots look more like paintings, and even tiny objects are full of detail.
CryEngine 3 already runs on Xbox One
Crysis has thrown its card into the hat of today's Xbox One announcements, to say that CryEngine 3 does indeed run on Microsoft's new console. The company is already licensed to provide middleware and tools for Xbox One, which means that any developers looking to use CryEngine 3 to make their games will have no problem running the code on the new box. There are a number of titles already announced for the Xbox One, but nothing using CryEngine 3 just yet. Don't weep, though; We're sure to hear about something soon.
EA: Dead Space 3, Crysis 3 pre-sales tracking ahead of previous installments
EA had some good news today about upcoming games Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3, announcing pre-orders for both games are trending ahead of their previous installments."Dead Space 3 pre-sells are outpacing Dead Space 2, and Crysis 3 pre-orders are tracking 40 percent ahead of Crysis 2," the company stated in its third quarter financials.In gauging the franchise's growth, EA CEO John Riccitiello has said Dead Space could reach the "5 million unit cadence" with its third primary installment.
Crytek rhythm minigame spreads charitable Xmas cheer
In festive news, Crytek published a free Christmas-themed minigame on its website today. Hop over there and you'll find 'A Very Crytek Christmas' on the front page, the game mixing scrolling rhythm play with a couple of Xmas classics. The Crysis developer says it's giving the money it would normally spend on Xmas cards to charity, instead choosing to spread some holiday love this way.Not that the game itself is particularly charitable. You can either try Silent Night on normal difficulty, which is tricky enough on its own, or you can get your butt rhythmically kicked by the expert-rated Jingle Bells. At least you'll have a few familiar Crysis faces to festively cheer you on, or in our case tell us we're hurting their ears.
Crytek's franchise getting more 'flexible' after Crysis 3, possibly F2P
Though the tale of Prophet, the guy underneath the nanosuit, will conclude with Crysis 3, Crytek is hardly ready to call it quits on that universe. Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek, says it "doesn't mean it's the end of the franchise." In fact, Crytek is already in the initial stages of developing the next Crysis game."There can be literally tonnes of titles out there within the franchise," Yerli told Eurogamer. "Unlike Far Cry, this time around we feel very flexible about Crysis." Yerli says that calling the next game Crysis 4 "would be misleading" since it would "imply the story just moves on" after Crysis 3."We do have a plan for a F2P version of Crysis, but how this looks and when this will be done, whether this is the next one or the next next one, is to be decided," Yerli added. "But we have a very clear picture of how this will look in a transitional period where retail and free-to-play can coexist for one title."

Are you interested in Crysis 3, but didn't play the first Crysis because whenever you tried to, your PC melted into a puddle? Well, EA wants to help catch you up by bundling in Xbox Live, PSN, and Origin codes for Crysis with pre-orders of Crysis 3 on respective platforms.If you're still gaming on the same PC you tried to run Crysis on back in 2007, then this isn't going to help you. Also, you definitely shouldn't be pre-ordering Crysis 3 for your PC. That's just silly.
Crysis series 75% off on Steam this weekend
The Crysis franchise is 75 percent off this weekend on Steam. Crysis and its semi-sequel, Crysis Warhead, are only $5 apiece. Crysis 2 is currently $10, while all three games are also available as a bundle for $17.50.The discounts will deactivate on Monday, September 10. Crytek's CryEngine 3 makes it easier than ever for devs to build games as pretty as Crysis
It's not every day you get to speak with the folks who make one of the most advanced game engines in the world, but today at E3, Crytek (you know, the folks responsible for Crysis) let us in on some of the secrets behind its latest game platform, CryEngine 3. We sat down with Kirthy Iyer, an animation technologist at Crytek, and had him walk us through some of CE3's tools that are enabling publishers to build games for any platform -- including PC, PS3 or Xbox 360 -- faster and better than ever. Among the highlights are a "multi-layer navigation mesh" that automates the movements of AI-controlled game characters, and super realistic water rendering technologies. Crytek's Gface hits beta, wants you to stream your games, life
Facebook games just not doing it for you anymore? Than put on your gameface -- or log into it, rather. Gface is an upcoming social network, powered by Crytek, that seems to be gunning for OnLive (or maybe Gaikai)'s cloud gaming foothold. Yes, streaming's the name of the game here -- Gface is powered by Crytek's new Seed Engine, a cloud technology platform that lets users share context aware game sessions, video seeds and personal media. Details are hazy at the moment, but if the network's new beta subscription page is anything to go by, Gface will allow friends to socialize, share live video feeds and stream casual and high-performance games in both single player and cross-platform multiplayer modes. This real-time sharing setup is designed to be a hardware independent, cross-platform network that runs in your browser, powered by the GFace experience plug-in; imagery on the teaser page suggests you'll be able to seamlessly pick up a game of "Warface" on your PC, smartphone or tablet. NBA Jam and Payday top October PSN sales
We get it: every October, it's all about basketball and bank robberies for us, so naturally the top-grossing games on PSN for the month revolve around similar subject matter. The PlayStation Blog reports that the two top games purchased and installed in October are NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and Payday: The Heist in first and second place, respectively. Taking third place was the re-release of Crysis, followed by Chrono Trigger and Resident Evil 4 HD. Also, we're glad to see Odin Sphere debut in the charts at number 15 -- you may recall, its release is part of the "Only on PlayStation Network" campaign where select PS2 games were given new life as PSN titles. Fujitsu's 10.51 petaflop K supercomputer is fastest in the world
Fujitsu, sweaty palmed from the construction of the K supercomputer, swore the colossal machine would manage a speed of ten petaflops by the year 2012. The effort has paid off handsomely: the hangar-sized machine has a top speed of 10.51. If you wanted to duplicate that setup at home, you'd only need 864 racks, 88,128 processors and enough cash in your back pocket to front an annual electricity bill of $10 million a year. The company will be spilling all at November's SC11 conference in Seattle, where the K will cement its position as the fastest computer in the world. One last thing -- we have a hunch that this machine can just about play Crysis.
