  • Deus Ex: HR hits PS Plus tomorrow, Saints Row: The Third later this month [update]

Tomorrow's introduction of Deus Ex: Human Revolution to PlayStation Plus may be aptly sneaky. After all, with a week left before E3, Eidos Montreal teases 'The Fall' - a tagline Square Enix registered Deus Ex domains and trademarks for. Then again, this is the same studio that yanked our chain on April 1. Speculation hats off, confirmation hats on. Definitely also coming to North America's Instant Game Collection sometime this month are the madcap Saints Row: The Third, the eccentric Machinarium (PS3), the mysterious Virtue's Last Reward, and the orc-ish Orc Attack. Meanwhile, in addition to Human Revolution, tomorrow's PS Store update brings Plus discounts to Grid 2, Portal 2 and its 'In Motion' DLC, and Let's Fish: Hooked On for the Vita. Finally, as ever June sees a number of games flung out of the 'Plus revolving doors. Sleeping Dogs passes out tomorrow, followed by Closure, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One, Infamous 2, and LittleBigPlanet 2 on June 11. Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny breaks out on June 18, and then BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend says so long on June 25. Update: There'll a few more PlayStation Plus comings and going this month beyond this lot, but Sony's keeping quiet about them for now - perhaps it has a few things up its sleeves for E3. The info comes via PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Manager Paul Sullivan, who took to the comments on the PlayStation Blog. "Not all games coming in and out are listed. Keep checking up on us for some more additions to the list," reads one of Sullivan's comments. Another says, "Keep checking on us, not *all* of the June games have been listed yet."

Eidos Montreal's Emile Pedneault, game designer on the Director's Cut of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, tells Penny Arcade Report the improvements planned for the Wii U version of the game aren't currently in the works for Xbox 360, PS3 or PC. Meanwhile, unused alternative headline to this article: "Square Enix passes on opportunity to sell Deus Ex twice."The improvements include graphical updates, goodies like a strategy guide and – easily the most important tweak – a reworking of those abysmal boss fights. The farmed out boss fights have now been reworked in-house by Eidos Montreal, as was the case with "The Missing Link" downloadable content.%Gallery-183306%

  • April Fools: Deus Ex: Human Defiance augments triangles into pixels

The Deus Ex: Human Defiance news teased by Eidos Montreal yesterday turned out to be an appeal for fan support for a pseudo-8-bit sequel, which uses the greatly reduced budget required for graphics to add two new cities, Montreal and Moscow. This is clearly an April Fools' Day joke – and the winky-face Facebook response makes that even clearer – but it resulted in some real news. "Deus Ex: Human Defiance" was trademarked by Square Enix Europe, and related domains were registered by CBS Films, but the developer revealed in a comment on its Facebook page that "the Human Defiance name was registered on the off-chance it we might need it, but it was decided later that it wouldn't be used." Thus, it was repurposed for this joke.

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution boss fights on Wii U 'as they should have been'

Eidos Montreal didn't mess around when it came to fixing one of the most widely criticized aspects of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in the upcoming Wii U Director's Cut."The boss fights are now as they should have been," Emile Pedneault, game designer on the Director's Cut told us today at PAX East. "We took them and completely rebuilt them. We couldn't change [the boss' character] model and the way they need to die because of the story telling, but we changed the level layout. We tweaked their AI and we've added tons of ways to deal with them."He continued, "You can deal with a boss fight in a stealth way, you can deal with a boss fight in a hacking way. We even have for each boss fight a way to kill them without firing a single bullet."Pedneault showed us the first boss fight, pointing out all the different ways that it could now be completed using other skills beyond "throw every grenade in your inventory and just keep shooting." There are several corridors now for stealth attacks and turrets for hacking, along with other goodies for players to discover. The boss fights were widely criticized when Deus Ex: Human Revolution originally launched, with Eidos Montreal eventually admitting it farmed out that portion of the game to an outside developer. Deus Ex DLC "The Missing Link," bundled with the Wii U version, designed in-house at Eidos Montreal gave a far more flexible experience. %Gallery-183306%

An Amazon listing indicates a Director's Cut version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is coming to the Wii U, with the release date for the United States denoted as May 7.The listing notes the game features "additional content," including using the GamePad with a new augmentation called the "Neural Hub." While Square Enix is listed as the publisher, the listing doesn't mention which developer is behind the port, but it may well be Straight Right. The Australian developer ported Mass Effect 3 to the system, and has been reported as bringing a major Square Enix game the Wii U's way too.Update 1: When approached, a Square Enix representative told Joystiq, "We don't comment on rumor or speculation." Update 2: The Amazon page has now been taken down, but you can see a screencap of the listing below the break, along with the featured box art. [Thanks, Steven]

Square Enix trademarked and registered domains for something called 'Deus Ex: The Fall' this week, adding to the speculation of what's up next for the franchise. Meanwhile, it's emerged Deus Ex: Human Defiance, which the publisher trademarked last week, is likely the name of the film in production; after associated domains were registered by CBS Films. In the case of Deus Ex: The Fall, however, Square Enix Europe filed both the trademark and the domain registrations. Square Enix hasn't announced a sequel to Human Revolution, while developer Eidos Montreal, who unveiled the Thief reboot this week, is working on an unannounced third project alongside the Deus Ex and Thief franchises.

Square Enix trademarked the name 'Deus Ex: Human Defiance' yesterday, suggesting a follow-up to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Square Enix Europe filed the trademark, and the list of goods associated with it heavily indicates a game in development.Square Enix hasn't announced a sequel, and Human Revolution developer Eidos Montreal is understood to be working on an unannounced third project that's "alongside" the Deus Ex and Thief franchises. Straight Right, the Mass Effect 3 developer for Wii U, is reportedly porting a major Square Enix game to the Nintendo console, and if that's accurate Human Revolution is a contender and Human Defiance may relate to that.At this moment, however, Square Enix has kept any upcoming entries in the Deus Ex franchise as stealthily hidden as Adam Jensen in an air vent - perhaps until now, that is. We've reached out to the company for comment.Update: A company representative tells us, "Square Enix does not comment on rumor and speculation."

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution film 'not a rehashing' of game

    02.22.2013

Deus Ex: Human Revolution film scribe C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson claim they're taking care to present a believable cyberpunk setting in their upcoming film, based on the Eidos Montreal game. "Yeah, the chief philosophy is we're not making a video game movie, we're making a cyberpunk movie," Deus Ex film co-writer C. Robert Cargill says in an interview with Crave Online. "We've taken a look at what's worked in video games and what hasn't, and really what we've broken down is what we think the audience really wants, [what] the audience that loves Deus Ex is going to want to see out of a Deus Ex movie. And it's not a rehashing of the game."The duo, which think of Mortal Kombat as the best video game movie yet made, will borrow motifs from the game, rather than attempt to replicate specific events. "The thing about Deus Ex, the landscape is massive. I mean, it is a big, broad, sprawling game, and look, it's impossible to get the aesthetic of that game into a single movie," Derrickson says. "That's the nature of turning a video game into a movie, is keeping the elements that are iconic and important, [that] advance the game, but also recognizing that if that's all you do, you'll just make another bad video game movie."According to Derrickson, there's a draft of the film already, and the process as a whole is "moving like a rocket."

Agent 47 is a fashionista (one doesn't accidentally wear $10,000 custom suits), so it should come as no surprise that he's also fashion forward and into Adam Jensen of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's garb. Today, Hitman: Absolution's launch day, both Adam Jensen's armor and pistol are available as downloadable content in Mr. 47's latest outing on Xbox 360, Steam and, likely, later today on PS3, following the PSN update. The Deus Ex: Human Revolution DLC suit provides "better protection from firearms with advanced armor," while Jensen's pistol can be equipped with a silencer for Agent 47. There are also a series of pre-order bonus costumes available for a buck apiece, or bundled for $6. Agent 47 isn't the only Square Enix protagonist getting in on the dress-up and raiding closets, Sleeping Dogs' Wei Shen also got in on that action.

Scott Derrickson, the director of Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, will direct and write the screenplay for the Deus Ex: Human Revolution movie, coming from CBS Films. Derrickson is partnering with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill on the Deus Ex screenplay."Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence," Derrickson says. "By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can't wait to bring it to the big screen."Eventually, we can all look forward to Derrickson's deep, tense, ballsy action flick based on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Our augmentations are tingling in anticipation.

Straight Right, the Australian developer porting Mass Effect 3 to Wii U, may also be working on a "triple-A Square Enix" port for Nintendo's new console. The info is based on the LinkedIn page (now altered) of Chris Slater, Straight Right's technical project manager, as spotted by an eagle-eyed NeoGAF user.Slater has since updated his LinkedIn profile, but a Google Cache of the page as it was on September 25 shows the project manager is "working for Straight Right on a short term contract, porting a triple-A Square Enix game to the yet-to-be-released Wii U platform." We have a screen-grab of the Google Cache page here. It's already known Straight Right is working on two Wii U games in addition to Mass Effect 3, with one an original IP and the other stemming from a well-known franchise. Since the Square Enix game is a port, it means this'd be the one from a well known franchise. Hitman Absolution, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and the new Tomb Raider are primary candidates. Crystal Dynamics previously denied Tomb Raider is coming to Wii U any time soon, saying the studio would have to design it "very differently" and with "unique functionality" for the Nintendo console. We reached out to Square Enix, but a spokesperson told us the publisher "cannot comment on rumors or speculation."
