Hot on the heels of its NB100 netbook, Toshiba is launching another little new laptop -- a 12.1-incher known as the Dynabook NX. The diminutive model comes equipped with a 1280 x 800 display, a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, up to 3GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD or 160GB standard hard drive, 802.11b/g/n, and a handful of the expected ports. No solid word on price, though Akihabara News is speculating the HDD version will run you about €1200 (or around $1736), while the SSD model will clock in at a hefty €1930 ($2793). The laptop is due out in late October, so if this sounds like your cup of tea, you might start saving the pennies right now.

Back in March it was the world's first laptop with a 128GB SSD. Now the Dynabook SS RX1 makes the bump to the RX2 while grabbing the title to the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop. Or so says Toshiba. Fortunately, Tosh didn't skimp on battery life (up to 12.5-hours when configured with an SSD) to achieve that 858-grams (1.89-pounds) weight. Shipping in late September, the SS RX2 features a semi-rugged frame, a 1.2GHz SU9300 ULV Core 2 Duo processor; up to 160GB of hard disk (or 128GB SSD); an LED backlit 12.1-inch 1,280 x 800 pixel display; up to 3GB of memory; Intel GS45 Express graphics chipset; 3x USB and 1x eSATA; 802.11a/b/g/n draft 2.0; integrated DVD super-multi drive; and built-in 3G data -- a road warrior's weapon of paradise.

Toshiba is getting back in the swing of things with a round of Summer updates for a bunch of laptops (at least in Japan). First up on the block is the Qosmio F40, the €1352, 15.4-inch model which now trades its HD DVD drive or a DVD multi option, sports a Core 2 Duo T8100 CPU atop a GN965 Express chipset, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and HDMI outs. The company has also updated the Dynabook AX (€922), which now comes in a pink, white, or shiny black casing, with a Celeron 550 CPU on board, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, HDMI outs, and a Super Multi optical drive. The 15.4-inch, WXGA-screened TX gets an bump in the form of the Core 2 Duo T8100, plus 2GB of RAM, 200GB hard drive, and those HDMI / Super Multi drive fixin's, all for €1100. Finally, the smaller, 13.3-inch CX line sports the same CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, everything else that the other models have, and a totally awesome €1230 price tag.

Your 64GB SSD getting you down? Right, you should be so lucky. Regardless, Toshiba just updated their 12.1-inch Dynabook SS RX1 in Japan with a new 128GB SSD option. Build RX1/TAE bundles 128GB of solid state disk with internal, KDDI EV-DO data module, 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U7600 processor, 2GB of memory, Intel 945GMS Express graphics, a 1,280 x 800 pixel panel resolution, and choice of 6.2 hour or 12.5 hour batteries. How much? Try something like ¥400,000 or more than $4,000 when it pops for Japanese retail next month.

Tired of fretting about which flavor of Windows will work best for you? Toshiba's apparently feeling your pain, and is looking to remedy said quandary by tossing in both operating systems with its new 15.4-inch Dynabook Satellite T31. Apparently, the unit includes Vista Business and XP Professional recovery discs, giving the buyer the option when they finally get it home. Specs wise, you'll be looking at a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T7250 on the high side (with a 1.86GHz Celeron 540 on the low-end), as well as optional WiFi, a WXGA (1,280 x 800) resolution panel, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, DVD burner and a rechargeable Li-ion good for around 1.3 hours. Additionally, the unit touts four USB 2.0 sockets, Ethernet, PCMCIA, a multicard reader, VGA / S-Video outputs and a FireWire port to boot. Check it out right now for between ¥175,350 ($1,573) and ¥206,850 ($1,856).

We already knew Toshiba's Dynabook TXW/69DW came loaded with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 GPU, but according to AVing, Japan could be seeing a revamped iteration that includes the HD 3800. Moreover, the 15.4-inch machine would boast an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 CPU and PM965 Express chipset, but we're left to wonder if any of the other critical components would be upgraded, too. Nevertheless, it seems that a price / release date is also uncertain, but if you just so happen to peep one of these in downtown Tokyo, be sure to holler in comments.

Toshiba seems to be on a serious roll as of late, at least in the world of laptops. Just following the launch of the Dynabook SS RX1 and a whole slew of new Qosmios and Satellites, the company is delivering two fresh, middle-of-the-road models (at least on Japanese shores). Both new laptops boast wildly predictable configurations, consisting of an 80GB or 120GB HDD, up to 4GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics chipset, and 802.11a/b/g -- with the 13.3-inch SS M40 rocking a Celeron 540 or Core 2 Duo T7100 processor (at 1.8GHz or 1.86GHz, respectively), while the 15-inch J63 sports a 1.73GHz Celeron M530. In Japan, the SS M40 ranges in price from around $1531 to $1789 while the J63 sells for $1496 to $1651. No word, however, on when or if these puppies will be making it Stateside.

Toshiba is showing off their 12.1-inch Dynabook SS RX1 this morning with specs aiming to please. According to Akihabara News, the store front model (read: not available on-line) can be configured with a 64GB SSD, a first if true but not a surprise. Configurable with a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U7600 proc, up to 2GB of memory and 11-hour battery. All this in a 19.5~25.5-mm sled. On sale in Japan starting today for about ¥279,800 or $2,284 well equipped but without the SSD.

At 8.6-pounds and more than 2-inches thick, this 17.1-inch sled packs 256MB of DirectX 10-capable GeForce 8700M GT graphics -- the new top-o-the-line 8M-series GPU from NVIDIA. The display touts a 1,680 x 1,050 pixel resolution with a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T7300, ±R dual-layer DVD burner and loads of in-and-outs under its glossy red finish. Yes, even HDMI for a quick digital-out to your new flat panel television. Available starting today in Japan with 1GB DDR2 / 120GB disk configurations starting at ¥219,800 or about $1,805.

The Qosmio F30W (F30/87AW) laptop is their AV focused model sporting a terrestrial digital TV tuner and bright 490 cd/m2, 15.4-inch 1280 x 800 pixel LCD. For ¥247,800 (about $2,047) you'll be one the... uh, privileged to hoist your own 4-kg (8.8-pound) / 52.1-mm (2.05-inch) thick slab. The F30W packs a 2GHz T7200 Core 2 Duo proc, 2GB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory, 128MB of nVidia GeForce Go 7300 graphics, ±R DL DVD super multi-drive, 2.7-hour lithium-ion battery, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, harmon/kardon's bass reflex speaker system, and Vista Home Premium loaded up on a 120GB 5400rpm SATA disk. It also brings plenty of expansion with 4x USB 2.0, Firewire, multi-format memory card reader and S/PDIF, D-Sub 15, S-Video, and Japanese D-terminal outputs. Sorry, no HD DVD drive here folks. For that you'll have to check the 10.6-pound Qosmio G30... if you can Alice. Also "announced" are the Satellite TXW and CXW followups to their AW6 and CW2. More new laptops out of Toshiba today for our friends in Japan, this time bringing a few updates to the company's more lightweight Dynabook offerings. The S30 appears to be the more interesting of the two, if for no other reason than the promised 13.5 hours of juice from the laptop's "long haul" battery (we'll take two of those batts, thanks). That marathon battery life is made possible in part by the slow-spinning 4,200 rpm 30GB hard drive and low-power (in more ways than one) Core Solo U1300 processor, running at a sprightly 1.06GHz. You can bump up the hard drive to 40GB running at a speedier 5,400 rpm if you so desire, though you'll have to give up about two hours of battery life for the pleasure. On the other side of things, Toshiba's new Dynabook SS M36 opts for durability over longevity, with a ruggedized design that's promised to protect the laptop from falls of about two feet. The M36 also packs a bigger punch than the S30, with a Core 2 Duo T5500 processor powering things (or Celeron M 430 if you're looking to save a few bucks), 512MB RAM (up to 2GB), a 40GB hard drive, and a combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Look to get between 3.4 and 5 hours of battery life from it depending on the configuration. Both laptops should be available sometime next month, with the S30 starting at 267,750 Yen ($2,300) and the M36 running 197,400 Yen ($1,700) for the Core 2 Duo config.

Aight everybody, we've got a fresh one comin' through here. Sony's faulty cells apparently made their way into Toshiba Satellite and Dynabook machines -- apparently about 340,000 units in all -- which are being recalled. (For reference, thus far we've racked up Apple, Dell, and Panasonic.) The upshot is that according to Toshiba, no one's been hurt and no explosions have been caused by their machines (yet). Unfortunately not much other information is readily available at this time, but we'll be sure to hit you back with the exact models, dates, cell identification numbers, and the rest before somebody's Satellite falls out of orbit and we get massive guilt complexes for not doing our duty as servants to the battery-using public.

While not the smallest of ultraportables, Toshiba's new dynabook SS S30 should be plenty portable for most. The 12.1-inch lappy measures 1.1-inch thick, and weighs a mere 2.7 pounds, while managing 7.7 to 9 hours of battery life based on HDD speed selected. The keyboard has a waterproof seal beneath it for extra durability, and the laptop features a fingerprint reader along with SD, PC card and an optional CF card reader. Both configurations of the laptop are based on Core Solo U1300 processors, with 512MB of RAM, Intel 945GM Express graphics, 802.11a/b/g WiFi and gigabit Ethernet. The main difference between the models is the 1.8-inch 4,200rpm 30GB in one (which makes room for the CF slot and all that battery life) and the 2.5-inch 5,400rpm 40 gigger in the other. The S30 should be launching in September for around 252,000 Yen -- about $2,168 USD.

Toshiba's introduced a whole raft of revisions to its Qosmio and Dynabook lines of laptops adding, on the Qosmio at least, terrestrial digital TV tuner capabilities. Leading the pack is the Qosmio F30, available in black or white, and loaded with a 1.66HGz Core Duo T2300 CPU, 128MB GeForce Go 7300 graphics card, 1GB RAM (maximum 2GB), 160GB hard drive, terrestrial digital/analog TV tuner, and 802.11b/g WiFi. It'll set you back a full ¥260,000 (about $2,260 US). On the Dynabook side of things, the AX, TX, CX, and SS MX models all get spec bumps, ranging from 1.46GHz Celeron M 410 to 1.66GHz Core Duo T2300 processors, and with prices coming in at ¥160,000 ($1,400 US) on the low end up to ¥200,000 ($1,740 US) for Dynabook SS MX, which also happens to be the smallest and lightest laptop of the lot. They all should be available in mid-to-late August.
