New York Senate passes ban on Elon Musk's Not-A-Flamethrower

If you live in New York state and bought one of The Boring Company's Not-A-Flamethrowers, you probably want to get rid of it shortly. The state's Senate recently passed a bill that bans the possession of a flamethrower for recreational purposes, and legislators very explicitly singled out Elon Musk's gadget as an example. The measure bars specifically bars any device that projects burning fuel at least three feet away, which appears to include Boring's hardware.

Elon Musk hasn't had the easiest time fulfilling his companies' promises lately, but there's at least one product arriving (more or less) on time. Musk has confirmed that the Boring Company has supplied the first 1,000 out of 20,000 flamethrowers. You had to visit the company to pick it up, but it shows that the device isn't just a figment of your imagination.

Just a few days after opening pre-orders for $500 Boring Company-branded flamethrowers, Elon Musk has announced that all 20,000 have been sold. That's $10 million in sales for a product that will ship in spring (hopefully) on a website that admits it's overpriced and said: "You can definitely buy one for less elsewhere." At least, according to Musk, each order will come with a complimentary fire extinguisher, and, of course, will help fund his tunnel-digging exploits. If you missed out and absolutely must have a flamethrower ASAP, there are others available. USA Today points out the XM42-M from Ion Productions Team that's a bit more expensive at $899, but promises a range of over 30 feet. If it absolutely must be Musk, however, don't despair -- he tweeted that a "snowthrower" would be fun.

No, we're not kidding. After weeks of teases, Elon Musk has confirmed that The Boring Company is selling... a flamethrower. That's right, the same company digging traffic-skipping tunnels is now offering a weapon. Plunk down $500 for a pre-order (there's no word on when it will ship) and you can have the "world's safest" fire-breathing weapon. Just in case it isn't safe enough, though, there's also a $30 branded fire extinguisher.

  • Shoot actual fire from your eyes with this 'Cyclops' helmet

There are good and bad ideas in the DIY annals, then there's this X-Men inspired helmet that lets lets you shoot flames from your eyes. Developed by YouTube user "Sufficiently Advanced," the "Cyclops Visor" is simply a welding helmet with a fuel tank, pump, nozzles and pilot lights. When activated by a switch on the side, it shoots a jet of flames mixed with fuel a distance of around ten feet. As demonstrated in the video (below), that makes the wearer just like Cyclops from X-Men, if that superhero couldn't see at all and was only a danger to himself.

We're still not really sure what a "creative technology studio" is, but it sure seems like a damn fun place to work. Apparently your job at one, like Chaotic Moon, is to just think of "awesome" ideas with little practical purpose and make them a reality. Why? Because you can. Last year the firm used a drone to tase a poor intern, and married an Oculus Rift to a Leap motion so we could punch sharks. This year it decided to try something a little less dangerous (and far less likely to end in a lawsuit). Tyrone Drone is a pretty standard drone with some simple modifications. Instead of holding a camera, he's holds and fires a spray can.

Strap on your 'chutes folks: The Secret World is letting you jump into Issue #7 A Dream to Kill next week! Funcom has announced that this next DLC -- with its mountable snowmobiles, base jumping, flamethrower, and more -- will be released on July 8th. Can't wait? You can get a sneak peek of what's to come in the teaser trailer after the break. Players have been enjoying all the tweaks and bug fixes of Issue #7 since June 26th, but the new content was not included in that patch. Once deployed to servers, the new missions and story arc will be played out mainly in Transylvania and culminate with the infiltration of Agartha by filth through the Tokyo entrance. The Agartha incident is, in turn, the beginning of a multi-patch event that will lead players all the way to the release of the Tokyo expansion. [Source: Funcom press release]

  • The Secret World's Issue #7 goes 007

April's Game Director letter for The Secret World is hot off the presses, and in it Joel Bylos shared some juicy morsels about the next issue in store for the horror and conspiracy-laced game. He revealed that whereas Issue #6 was spiced with an Indiana Jones flavor, Issue #7 will be sprinkled with a distinct 007 zest. Yes, Bond. James Bond. Set in Transylvania, Issue #7 directs players to investigate the presence of the werewolves in the area, which ultimately leads them to an Orochi facility secreted away below a glacier in the Carpathian Fangs. Along the way, players get to experience adventures as a secret agent, complete with daring chases (a snowmobile one at that!), dare-devil jumps from exploding bridges, and close shaves with laser beams near sensitive areas. There's also a new auxiliary weapon to brandish -- the flamethrower. But the new goodies don't stop there. Bylos introduced a new feature that allows for custom streaming of radio stations or playlists directly into the client as well as a some PvP changes including tweaks to the matchmaking system. He concluded with some teasers about Black Ops and Issue #8. For all the details, check out the full letter.

In each of my MMOs, I know my weapons intimately. In Star Trek Online, it's a plasma railgun that spits glowy death at 5,000 shots a minute. In Lord of the Rings Online, it's a legendary spear that I've named Metroid. In Guild Wars 2, it's a ferocious flamethrower that's laid waste to most of the civilized world. Burn, baby, burn! Sometimes we're constrained by class and available drops to what weapons we equip, but chances are that you've had a favorite or two in there. Maybe it was a weapon that had a cool design or proc'd a neat effect when used. Perhaps it's something that took you a lot of effort to acquire or create. Or it could just be a weapon that completely gels with your personality. Open up the door to your armory -- and heart -- and sound off about your favorite weapon! Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

  • RIFT reveals the Tactician, master of flamethrowers

    by

    10.06.2012

RIFT has been updated with new areas and content since launch, but the upcoming Storm Legion expansion is set to seriously kick things up a notch. As if tripling the size of the game world weren't enough, the expansion will raise the level cap and add a new technology-based soul to each of the game's core classes. The battle-mage style Harbinger soul was revealed at Gamescom 2012 in August, followed by the Tempest, and data from the test server hinted that the remaining pair might be named Defiler and Tactician. Last night Trion Worlds confirmed our suspicions by revealing the new Rogue Tactician soul to livestream viewers. The Tactician uses a magical weapon that's part flamethrower and part fire extinguisher, able to deal incredible area-effect elemental damage to enemies but actually heal allies. Players using the soul can also place small devices called Cores on the ground to provide area-effect healing, buffs, and additional damage. The flamethrower-like weapon is directionally aimed and can be channelled while the player is moving, so clever positioning is required to get the most out of this unique soul.

Ever get tired of dealing with "pick up these things and bring x amount of them to me" type quests in World of Warcraft? Well, if you have, may we recommend Soulara's method of dealing with it? Pick up a flamethrower and torch things into next year! Sure, whatever it was won't get to whomever it was supposed to and you might wipe out a lot of trees in the process, but it's a great stress release. Really, more MMOs need flamethrowers, we think. Anyway, our opinion tendered, we move on to the note attached to Soulara's bright World of Warcraft One Shots image: "[Here's a screenshot of my character] toasting up some supply boxes in Stonetalon Mountains with the nifty flamethrower." If you've found a new favorite weapon or toy, why not take a screenshot of you using it and email it in to us here at oneshots@massively.com? Be sure to include your name, the name of the game, and a note about what makes that particular screenshot so awesome. You never know -- it may wind up being the next one we feature here on Massively! %Gallery-112285%

  • Ejector seat-equipped B.O.N.D. bicycle doesn't expect thieves to talk, it expects them to fly (video)

Having anything stolen is a drag, but having your pride and joy bicycle go missing is a real kick in the pants. Maybe that wouldn't happen if you had the B.O.N.D. -- "Built of Notorious Deterrents." That's something of an acronym stretch, but we'll let it slide after getting a load of this cycle's ample assets. The most striking additions are of course the caterpillar tread on the back and ski on the front, in theory enabling this thing to manage a man-powered escape across land or snow. It's the ejector seat, however, that will really catch would-be thieves attention, self-armed and rigged to go off if unapproved cheeks make contact (as shown in the video below). Also of note is the bar-mounted flamethrower, designed for singeing the mirrors of commuters who don't make room. Or of SPECTRE operatives who get too close. You know, whichever. This is sadly not a model you can buy, a one-off created by UK bicycle insurer ETA, who we're hoping also offers premium discounts for frame-mounted miniguns and baskets full of grenades.

  • Earthrise character build brings the pain

Things are starting to pick up on the Earthrise news front, and thank goodness. We gamers are a fickle and impatient bunch, and extended time out of the spotlight invariably brings cries of "vaporware!" and the like. Happily, Masthead Studios has begun to release more details regarding its upcoming sci-fi sandbox, including interviews, screenshots, and dev diaries. The latest diary appears courtesy of German fansite OnlineWelten and features the third in a series of character build articles designed to highlight aspects of the game's combat and equipment systems. Moving on from last week's featured avatar, a ranged specialist named Tommie, the Earthrise devs have unveiled Freddy, who looks to be Enterra's answer to the traditional tank archetype -- albeit with a hefty dose of offensive capability thanks to the game's use of skills over classes. The dev diary goes into great detail regarding Freddy's skill build and also drops a few hints about his equipment (which includes the Translunex Corporation's Agony flamethrower as well as power armor). "He can lay waste to a carefully planned team build and as such, is a primary target... Freddy is one of the most powerful builds in Earthrise," says the article.

Korn's "Freak on a Leash," Smashing Pumpkin's "Tonight, Tonight" and Michael / Janet Jackson's "Scream" come to mind when thinking of stunning music videos of the past score, but we're guessing that a 3:19 clip from the good people in Dancing Pigeons will be joining that fray. The music video for "Ritalin" was shot entirely on a Vision Research Phantom and Canon EOS 7D, with the former handling the slow motion work. Which, of course, is the star of the show. You may not think 199 seconds of flamethrower vs. fire extinguisher would be entertaining, but you'd be wrong. Hop on past the break and mash play, but be sure to position a drip rag beneath your chin beforehand.

We covered the hilarious (and terrifying) DDR mod known as Dance Dance Immolation all the way back in 2005 -- for those who may have missed it, here's the basic premise: You play Dance Dance Revolution, and if you do poorly, you get shot in the face with flamethrowers. Fortunately, you're equipped with a flame retardant suit -- though if you weren't, we imagine DDI would make for an awesome Saw trap. (You must dance ... TO SAVE YOUR LIFE!)Anywho, the game/art installation has only made about eight public appearances since its 2005 inception, and it recently showed up at "How To Destroy the Universe," an industrial art festival in the San Francisco Bay area. BoingBoing recently got a chance to talk to DDI's pyrophilic progenitors (the folks from art group Interpretive Arson), and even summoned the bravery to step aboard the dance mat/convection oven. A video account of their combustible misadventures are posted after the jump!

Now, if you'll excuse us we have to go try out that "Spaceballs! The Flame Thrower!" on a few zombies...

Firesky has launched a Stargate Worlds channel on YouTube, and has promised that a new video will go live every week day from here on out. So far there are six videos, all of which are brief, punchy developer interviews related to the various weapons in the game.A few of them are a little painful to watch due to extreme geekiness, but there is a somewhat amusing running joke about the flamethrower weapon being a terribly kept secret. Its existence is unconvincingly denied in most videos, and in one it is confirmed but the developer insists that flamethrower gameplay is not ready to be shown to the public. He says this while a monitor behind him displays all kinds of in-game flamethrower carnage.Firesky proudly brags that the channel was the #1 most subscribed on YouTube during the week of the 21st, and that it sits comfortably in the top 25 for the whole month of September. That said, most of the videos have only had a couple thousand views, except for the very first video (the flamethrower one), which had 8,000 views. Huh; that's kind of like a microcosm of the monthly lifecycle of an MMO! Anyway, we've embedded the flamethrower footage on the other side of the jump.
