Soccer, like almost every other professional sport, has ground to a halt in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak. The most-watched and prestigious leagues, including the English Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga, Italy's Serie A and France's Ligue 1 have all been suspended in recent weeks. European club competitions including the Champions League and Europa League aren't happening, either, and Euro 2020 has been pushed back to June 2021. The Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, which includes an oft-forgotten soccer tournament, is looking less likely with each passing day, too.

Even though 'Street' soccer will be the biggest addition to FIFA 20, hardcore fans of the franchise know the importance of Career Mode. And this year, with the new game launching on September 27th, developer EA Sports is promising to make the feature more authentic and customizable than ever before. Not only will you be able to change the body type, skin tone, clothing, hairstyle of your managers, but in FIFA 20 you'll now have the chance to create and choose female characters. In addition to that, taking a cue from Football Manager, your coach will be able to have a direct impact on team morale based on his or her press conferences, squad rotation, chats with players and more.

When their dreams of growing up to become a footballer don't materialise, many Brits turn to a career in football management. Deciding not to earn their UEFA badges, gamers past and present have grabbed a copy of Sports Interactive's Football Manager (formerly Championship Manager) in a bid to take Woking from the Conference to the Champions League in six seasons. The game's popularity has seen its player database become a bona-fide tool for helping Premiership clubs scout future recruits, and soon it'll make its debut on the big screen. According to Sports Interactive, An Alternative Reality: The FM Documentary is a feature length film that investigates the game's effect on the world's most popular sport. It'll head to a minimum of 26 Vue cinemas throughout the UK on October 7th for one night only, after which it'll find its way online. If you've always wanted to become part of Football Manager folklore, the game's creators will add one luckily cinemagoer to the next instalment of the franchise, which launches in November.

Back in 2008, Everton FC raised eyebrows when it announced that it'd use the player database from the video game Football Manager to scout future recruits. Fast-forward to now, however, and every other manager in the league will have access to the same information. That's because statistics company Prozone has signed a deal to integrate Sports Interactive's highly-detailed catalog of over 80,000 players into its Recruiter platform. That means that Sam Allardyce and Ronald Koeman will be using the same database to hunt for unpolished gems that we've all been playing for the better part of 15 years. Now that all the managers will be playing Football Manager, we just hope that someone recognizes our genius and gives us a shot at a top club -- after all, we did take Wycombe Wanderers to the Champions League.

Typing of the Dead: Overkill gets a round of free DLC today, turning all of the game's phrases into lines of commentary from the Football Manager series. Some gems include "Spooned it over," "Little flick off" and "Horror leg break." How does this make sense? Well, typing and soccer both require dexterity, it's a massive sport in Europe, and they already did a Shakespeare DLC pack.

  • Football Manager 2013 was pirated over 10.1 million times, once in the Vatican

Sports Interactive studio head Miles Jacobson revealed that Football Manager 2013 was illegally downloaded over 10.1 million times in a talk at the London Games Conference, MCVUK reported. He explained that the cracked software featured a "Home" flaw, which let the developer track the IP addresses of all pirates. Among the regions Jacobson discovered the illegal downloads in, China led the group with 3.2 million downloads followed by Turkey with 1.05 million copies of the game. Jacobson added that one person in the 547,000 that illegally downloaded Football Manager 2013 in Italy was located in Vatican City. While the developer said it would "be ridiculous to think" that every illegal download equated to one lost sale of the game, he estimated that 176,000 sales were lost to pirating, and that 1.74 percent of downloaders would have potentially purchased Football Manager 2013 had the cracking software not been available. Putting it in tangible terms, Jacobson equated the lost sales to $3.7 million in revenue that Sports Interactive and publisher Sega won't see. Jacobson was previously optimistic in November 2012 about the new anti-piracy measures placed in the game, noting that Football Manager 2012 wasn't pirated until two weeks after release. By comparison, Football Manager 2013 went 119 days without being cracked, the official LGC Twitter account noted during Jacobson's talk.

Chalk this April Fools joke up as cruel, because Sports Interactive's announcement of Football Manager 1888 today leaves us with a game we know doesn't exist that we want to play so badly. The developer says the fake game gives players "the option of taking over any of the original 12 clubs involved in the 1888/89 season and guiding them to league and cup glory."Screens of the management game's interface are sepia-toned and weathered, giving the game an "authentic" 1888-era look. "You will experience real life problems of the era, such as: players being called up to the army leaving you with a hole in your squad and players having to retire from football with immediate effect following a serious injury," the announcement reads. With the Football Manager modding community being as active as it is, we hope this mode will exist in some capacity in Football Manager 2013. Until then, it's just another one of today's April Fools jokes.

Sports Interactive, developers of the Football Manager series of soccer management simulation games, added "17 or 18" people to the team this year. Studio head Miles Jacobson credited the development team's growth and the heightened expectations for Football Manager 2013 to its anti-piracy measures, in an interview with MCV."With the measures that we used last year, the game wasn't pirated for two weeks. The extra sales that we got in that time has helped us to get the new members of staff this year," Jacobson said. He added that Football Manager 2013's new anti-piracy system had yet to be cracked."If we can hold another, three, four weeks, as long as we can really, it will benefit the retailers and ourselves and ultimately, the consumer as well. If we do much better this year, we'll be investing that back into the studio, take on more people to be able to do more features," he said.

Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. has announced that it will begin streamlining its American and European operations after posting an 7.1 billion Yen ($86 million dollar) extraordinary loss for the 2011 year. The move is expected to create a "smaller company positioned for sustained profitability" with the company planning a shift to a new "digital content" strategy. It'll cancel work on new, forthcoming titles and just concentrate on key earners like the Sonic, Football Manager and Total War franchises. There's no official word on if it'll involve job losses, but the company is setting aside 4.9 billion yen ($59.7 million) of that loss figure in order to cover the costs of the corporate reorganization. In the meantime, we're off to pour one out for one of our childhood staples.

  • The Game Archaeologist plays with MUDs: A talk with Richard Bartle

From talking with Richard Bartle, reading his blog, and looking over several interviews that he's done, I've concluded that the co-creator of the first multi-user dungeon is, in many ways, a card. A smart one, a perceptive one, and an outspoken one, but a card nonetheless. I say this in a good way, of course, because for all of the verbal pussyfooting that often goes on in this industry, it's refreshing to hear the voice of someone who knows what he thinks and isn't afraid to say it, even if it goes against the grain. Dr. Bartle's name often comes up in discussions of both MUDs and MMORPGs. His designs, work and scholarship have influenced MMOs in substantial ways, and it's possible that if our children end up learning about massively multiplayer RPGs in school some day, Bartle's name will be mentioned once or twice. While he's sometimes polarizing, it's hard to deny the incredible work he's done, which is why I was excited to get to talk to him about this month's subject on the Game Archaeologist. So hit that pesky jump and let's pick the mind of a guy who really earned the right to post "FIRST!!1!"
