  • 17 songs pulled from GTA: San Andreas in latest Steam update

According to player reports, a recent patch for the Steam version of open-world crime sandbox Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas adds support for Xbox 360 controllers, but also strips out numerous songs from the in-game radio stations. Presumably this is the result of licenses expiring, as the same 17 songs are missing from recent mobile versions of the game. Beyond the removal of the songs, reports are pouring in from players who claim that the update breaks save compatibility with old versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, strips out resolution options and causes issues with mouse input. As Rockstar Nexus points out, however, these problems may not be the result of the update, and could instead be the result of hardware issues or the many, many patches San Andreas has received since its 2005 debut conflicting with one another. There's just no way to tell, given the huge amount of conflicting information coming from fans. Unfortunately, our attempts to contact Rockstar for more information were met with silence. If you're experiencing issues with the Steam incarnation of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, let us know in the comments. There's currently no blanket fix for these problems, but at least we can suffer together. [Image: Rockstar Games]

  • Report: Xbox 360's GTA: San Andreas HD is an Android port

In lieu of rebuilding Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from scratch for its recent Xbox 360 re-release, Rockstar Games simply ported the existing Android version of San Andreas to Microsoft's console, according to the tech sleuths at Digital Foundry. In a test comparing numerous versions of San Andreas, Digital Foundry noticed numerous similarities between the Xbox 360 and Android releases. "Viewed side by side, Xbox 360 and [Android-powered] Shield Tablet games appear to be a close match - the higher-resolution 2D artwork and the new front end are much the same, though the new console release appears to possess enhanced draw distance over the Android version (even when it's set to 100 per cent on the mobile version)," the report states. "Unfortunately, aside from the inclusion of Achievements, there's very little love given to this new edition. Just like the Android release, there's absolutely no anti-aliasing available, whereas even the original PC version supports this, while the vast majority of Xbox Originals on the 360 emulator supported 2x or 4x MSAA depending on the title." Further, Digital Foundry notes that the game's mobile roots have left its framerate capped at 30 frames per second, a decision that results in frequent hitching and stuttering. "What could have been an opportunity to produce the ultimate, definitive version of GTA: San Andreas comes across as something of a missed opportunity," the group concludes. [Image: Rockstar Games]

Rockstar's recently-revealed port of open-world crime simulator Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is now eligible for release from the company's virtual, metaphorical prison system and is seeking rehabilitation on Xbox 360 systems. If you're looking to relive Carl "CJ" Johnson's adventures in sunny San Andreas, you'll need 2.05 GB of free hard drive space and $3.74 (or £2.99 if you're in the UK) to pay bail. Get it? Bail? 'Cause it's a game about crime! Have fun, you rapscallions. [Image: Rockstar Games]

Following a recent leak that exposed Xbox 360 Achievements for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Rockstar Games has confirmed that an updated version of the open-world crime sandbox is headed to Microsoft's moribund console. Beyond confirming that the Achievements discovered by fans are legit, Rockstar has offered a modicum of information on what will be included in the San Andreas redux. Obviously, the game will feature Achievement support, and the Rockstar support page notes that the game will feature 720p resolution and "enhanced draw distance." Lacking from Rockstar's description was any mention of how much the digital re-release will cost, but we won't have to wait long for the answer to that mystery. After coming to iOS and Android last year, the final game in the Grand Theft Auto 3 trilogy is out now on Windows Phone 8. The debate will ever rage on over which one is the best, but there's no doubt San Andreas is the phattest. Wait, we mean fattest.

A new and improved version of GTA: San Andreas is coming to mobile platforms next month. Rockstar Games points out the mobile port of the PS2 game will have remastered graphics with better shadows. The mobile port also has a greater draw distance, improved color palette and enhanced models for both characters and cars, which Rockstar says will up the graphical fidelity to "make this the best-looking version of San Andreas yet." On top of bringing all the purdy to the small screen, GTA: San Andreas for mobile also improves upon the original's controls with a new contextual control option that displays buttons only when needed, though Rockstar hasn't said specifically how that will work. Rockstar has also added a trio of new control schemes for driving and maneuvering and overhauled the game's checkpoint system for "easier progression." GTA San Andreas for mobile will have full controller support, including Made for iOS controller functionality on iOS 7, and is planned to launch on iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile devices sometime next month.

  • Is Rockstar announcing a GTA MMO?

If you've been sitting back just waiting for a look at an online version of Grand Theft Auto, you'll have to wait a little longer... but at least not much! Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto Online is on its way. The announcement, however, is just a teaser that the premiere of the game, along with a gameplay trailer and previews, will be incoming on Thursday, August 15th. The move to an official online version is not unexpected. Back in January, the voice chat update brought the franchise one step closer to MMO-dom. We've even done an impressions piece on a multiplayer version of GTA San Andreas. And last month, Massively mused on the possibility of an MMO after noting some online features in the reveal trailer for GTA V. But will GTA Online be an actual MMO, or will it just be a multiplayer lobby for GTA V? The answer may be forthcoming Thursday. [Thanks to Dengar for the tip]

OK, you know that guy who's always going on about how bloody awesome it would be if someone ever made a working multiplayer mod for Skyrim? If you don't know him, well, you do now, because he's me. Back before I was bitten in earnest by the MMO bug, I spent quite a lot of time messing with private servers of both the Jedi Academy and Neverwinter Nights persuasions. And when I say "messing with," I don't mean I logged into them, I mean I hosted them, made mods and skins for them, and generally wasted significant portions of my youth serving as a GM. Needless to say, it was a blast, and the thought of having that experience again in a larger game world is just short of orgasmic. Alas, no one has made much of a multiplayer Skyrim mod yet, and while private servers for NWN and Neverwinter Nights 2 are still running and serving their niche communities quite capably, those are topics for another edition of MMO Burnout. I'd like to tell you about something similar that I've been playing lately, though. It's called Multi Theft Auto. %Gallery-177696%

  • Backup singer loses lawsuit against Take-Two over GTA: San Andreas

Michael "Shagg" Washington, supposed former Cypress Hill backup singer (though the band denied any affiliation), lost his 2010 lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games over alleged use of his likeness in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Wednesday. Washington claimed he met with the game's developers in 2003 to discuss his troubled youth and "street life." He first learned of his resemblance to the game's "CJ" character six years later, leading to the $250 million lawsuit. The California appeals court upheld the ruling in favor of Take-Two, in which the judge said the "plaintiff is relying entirely on CJ's physical appearance in the game, but that appearance is so generic that it necessarily includes hundreds of other black males." The lack of evidence in whether Take-Two actually used Washington's likeness, in addition to a failed test for insufficiently transformative use, led to Washington losing the case.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas now has an ESRB rating for PlayStation 3, following in the footsteps of PS2 siblings GTA 3 and Vice City. Curiously, the ESRB also re-rated Vice City for PS3, maybe feeling the need for a nostalgic revisit in light of its 10th anniversary and arrival on iOS and Android. With GTA 3 recently releasing on PSN as a PS2 Classic, it's not a great leap to suggest we'll see Vice City and San Andreas do the same in the future.

  • Cypress Hill backup singer suing Rockstar and Take-Two over GTA: San Andreas (seriously)

When you think of Cypress Hill, you probably don't think of riding bicycles around the mean streets of Rockstar's fictional "San Andreas." But perhaps that's where your mind should go, argues backup singer Michael "Shagg" Washington, who's suing the developer (and its publisher, Take-Two Interactive) six years after the game's release. Washington claims he met with Rockstar in 2003 "to talk about street life for the [then] upcoming game," including a description of his "troubled life in his youth" and specifics about "how the teenagers in his gang rode around on bicycles." IGN got its hands on a copy of the suit, which explains that Washington didn't see San Andreas in action until this past July, when his nephew was playing it. "The plaintiff had never seen the game. He did not own or play video games," the complaint admits, further explaining, "Upon examination of images of 'CJ' and comparison to his photos from that year and other evidence, it became clear that Rockstar had stolen his image and never paid him." For Washington's claims, he's asking for 25 percent of Rockstar's profits from San Andreas -- approximately $250 million. Take-Two, unsurprisingly, says the case "is completely without merit" and the publisher "will vigorously defend itself in the matter."

This week's Xbox Live Deal of the Week finds a few Xbox Originals at a 33 percent discount (sounds so much more substantial that way). As previously noted, the promotion includes the original Fable for 800 ($10), along with Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas at the same $5 discount. Before you impulse buy, make sure you aren't interested in next week's Deal of the Week, which finds all of Fallout 3's DLC (Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta) at 400 ($5) apiece. Broken Steel is a must-have for the level cap increase, but all the packs help deepen the already epic game.
