  • Feel the horror of the NES mashup video

You've got to feel for the poor guy from Kung Fu. First, he gets embroiled in a murder mystery that involves a surfing cat and an aerobics instructor, now, things have somehow gotten worse. Now he's stuck in NatrapsX where he's forced to kick Koopa shells and fight Zangief with only the Green Giant to aid him. Later, the white spy from Spy vs. Spy is squashed by a giant Princess Toadstool. So ... yeah. He's having one of those days. This video is, perhaps, the most compelling example yet that eight-year olds should not be allowed to drink. For if their alcohol-addled minds were to stumble along this nightmare in the dim hours between dusk and dawn it is certain, certain, their sanity would not live to see daybreak.[Via Hemmy.net]

  • The latest iPhone Twittering, on a map

I have a confession to make: even though I was there at the iPhone launch, I haven't actually purchased an iPhone. Yes, I'm part of that supposedly small (though I think there are quite a few of us) group of Mac fans who have chosen not to shell out $2k over the next few years to own a little piece of the revolution. But I still want to be on the cutting edge of the iPhone zeitgeist and that's why I think this little mashup is so cool. Reader ADM tells us that he's squeezed together Google Maps, Twitter, and Ning to bring you a geographic, browsable representation of what people are saying on Twitter about the iPhone. Now you too, even if you don't have an iPhone, can stay up to date about what people are saying and where they're saying it.What's that? You don't care about the iPhone? And even if you do, you think something like this is completely silly and unnecessary? Touché. But ADM has also included the source code through Ning, so you're welcome to make your own mashup about whatever you want. Meanwhile, I and mine will continue to listen intently through the tubes, and hope for our own little bit of salvation: a price drop.

  • Today's best crossover video: Fighters and shoot-'em-ups

Our latest trip down the internet's (You) Tubes leaves us basking in the mash-up glory of JudgeSpear. This videomaker's page showcases dozens of game crossovers, with characters from different titles fighting, and even non-gaming characters get inserted into the action. While a little long, we especially like one of the shoot-'em-up crossovers, where a spaceship is piloted through several fighting games and even a GameBoy version of Super Mario Bros.If you're still not convinced, let this sway you: Mike Tyson makes an appearance near the end. Watch the video after the break.

We don't know when it became in vogue to dub over Pokemon cartoon clips with audio from 300's trailers, but that appears to be what's hot on the streets nowadays. And when we say "the streets," keep in mind that we mean Youtube. Some mashups are better than others, so we've pasted three of these animated adaptations for you to cast your hot-or-not votes on past the jump. If you've ever wanted to see the likenesses of King Leonidas and Mewtwo played out, today is your lucky day.[Thanks, Ali!]

  • Today's franchise face-offiest game video: Bauer versus Riker

It's Riker versus Bauer in tonight's video pick. (What, you thought we'd post about that other video again?) Through the magic of editing -- and a rocking soundtrack -- these two leaders face off in a game of Street Fighter. Bauer uses his ability to multitask to get Gamefaqs tips, while beardless Riker has only his grimace and guile. This YTMND mash-up loops soon after it starts, but the quick editing is dense with detail; we laughed through several repetitions. The video isn't embedable, so you'll have to venture into the dangerous tubes beyond Joystiq. But be sure to come back to tell us what you think.

  • Mashup: NES meets DVD and wins

Joystiq reader Zach has just spent countless hours, amounts of sweat, and possibly even ounces of blood by mashing up a Nintendo Entertainment System with a portable DVD player. The end result is a pretty swanky DVD player that even has a controller hooked up to it via USB to serve as the remote. It also plays nice with his PlayStation Portable, making this a completely bizarro world where Sony and Nintendo work things out and just get along.Check out his Flickr album of the whole project here, and then swing by and check out the video of the whole thing if you're so inclined. It's an impressive amount of work and looks pretty darn cool. He even has the original Nintendo bag as a little carrying case for it! In fact, if these were for sale, we'd buy a couple of 'em. This may have just inspired us to dig the old NES out of the garage and give it a whirl. One day the sweet day will come when someone mods a PS3 into one of these things

We're not going to lie: we're huge Daily Drawing fans. More importantly, we're fans of Jim Welch's gaming mash-up paintings, which usually center around Nintendo characters. See, that's our thing. So when he sent word of his latest illustration, combining the dungeon crawling goodness of The Legend of Zelda with the tense, barrel-dodging gameplay of Donkey Kong, we couldn't help but check it out. Good thing we did, as it's one of his best works yet. As always, we've embedded the video past the post break.Past illustrations: ContraVania: a gaming mash-up Metroid + Mario = Metrio? • Nike + iPod + Google Maps = Runometer

Here's something I've been wishing the Nikeplus.com site to implement itself: integration with Google Maps. Not ones to wait around for giant companies to switch on niche features, a small software company by the name of Gordian Labs has created the Runometer, a not-quite-even-beta mashup that lets you view and compare your Nike+ running data, as well as plot out your runs on Google Maps. By providing software and/or instructions for Mac OS X, Windows and even Linux, Nike+ owners can upload their run data, sketches of their routes or even GPS data for the ultimate in geek running goodness. A handy how-to guide is provided to help you get on your feet, but you'd better get moving - Runometer users have already ran over 1000 miles and plotted 284 routes![via Engadget]

We've made it to the last of our grand prize contests in the Countdown to Burning Crusade, and it's high time to announce the prize winners. The runner-up, who will take home a JINX World of Warcraft hoodie for her efforts, is Myssiing on Stonemaul, aka photochik02, who sent in the following video pitting night elf versus blood elf in an Annie Get Your Gun-style sing-off to the death (no, to the pain!). Grats to Myssiing, and stay tuned for our first place machinima winner!

We're no strangers to the work of Jim Welch who, through his website, maintains a strict regimen of drawing daily. His end products are, often, amazing and instill in us feelings of envy and jealousy. We wish we could produce such lovely pieces of art. Instead, our destiny seems to be on the business end of a laptop, captured in a cage and left to blog until our fingers are tiny nubs and the last sliver of light has disappeared on the dungeon wall.Video has been, as always, embedded into the post past the jump. Update: now with working video!Past illustrations: Metroid + Mario = Metrio? Yoshi gets reimagined

  • John Lennon + Halo 3 ad = instant karma

Following hot on the heels of the Gears of War remix phenomenon comes a stellar entry in new Halo 3 "Starry Night" remix/mashup arena. It's surprising how well John Lennon's "Instant Karma" works with this ad, and it just plain trumps the Halo music, sorry Marty. Please don't go all Yoko on our ass.[Thanks, Eric]

Ever wondered what you can get up to armed only with a map of the world and a game idea? These game mashups use Google Maps in some pretty exciting ways, from a scavenger hunt to an online golf game. Some of them are fairly old, but they encompass a range of possibilities. If you're inspired to create your own, the site also has a list of possible ideas for Google Maps-fuelled antics; Risk and GPS-based games seem more obvious than "The World of Kingdom of Loathing". Some really cool collaborations could spring forth from here.[Via pasta and vinegar]
