Hey, American PS3 owners ... tired of your Xbox 360-owning friends laughing in your face because they can play Stranglehold right now while you're stuck waiting until the end of the month for your interactive John Woo-inspired goodness. Well the mockery is over, because today you can play Stranglehold on your console of choice.True, it's just a downloadable demo, but playing it over and over and over again until Sept. 25 is kind of like having the full version. • Stranglehold demo on PSN this week? Forum mod says "Yes"

Sony set a dangerous precedent with last week's PSN update (and also, a tragic mistake). We'll be expecting similar amounts of content for the US PSN and a much greater amount for the EU PSN (alright, alright -- enough moaning about the EU PSN, but honestly: we're bitter). So far this week is shaping up quite nicely now that we have confirmation of Motorstorm's Coyote Revenge update and, now, a Stranglehold demo. That's right. A demo for a game that doesn't involve balls or wheels. We're excited! The announcement was made on the official Midway forums by the moderator "Echo77." Where do we recognise that name from? Oh yeah, he's the same fellow that started the Stranglehold region free nonsense a couple of months ago. Regardless, we're going to remain cautiously optimistic and hope for the best come Thursday.

After last week's glut of new games, the offerings have slimmed down once again. Last week was short on shooters though, so we're sure action fans will be pleased with this week's lineup. This week we (finally) get a crack at Stranglehold and Medal of Honor: Airborne. So, which will it be: John Woo Hong Kong action or World War II paratrooping combat action. Of course, there is the possibility of an even bolder choice: none of the above. But where's the fun in that?If you need help deciding, don't forget that demos are available for both titles on Xbox Live Marketplace.[Via Joystiq]

  • Stranglehold for the cheap and HDMI 360s

It's that time again when we open up the Sunday newspaper, gather up all the retail ads and painstakingly look for the best gaming deals this week has to offer. So, enough setup already ... let's get to it.One of this week's best new release deals is at Circuit City where they're offering Stranglehold for only $47.99. That's a $12 savings which is quite the deal. We couldn't find any other software deals, but ran across Circuit City's 2-day Labor Day special (Sunday and Monday only) on a Premium 360 where they'll throw in a copy of Rockstar's Table Tennis and a wireless controller for free. Nothing amazing, but it's something. Finally, for those of you who want to be guaranteed a HDMI connection on your 360, Best Buy is advertising the "new" Xbox 360 Premium w/HDMI SKU. It's a very nice gesture that prevents online orderers from getting an old, HDMI-less 360.That's all the noteworthy deals we could find in this week's Sunday ads, but we're sure you've come across other deals online so feel free to share with your fellow fanboys. You know, because sharing is the right thing to do.

  • Stranglehold delayed until late September for PS3

This is coming from a long line of "is it, is it not" scenarios for John Woo's action title Stranglehold. First it was held back, then region locked, then region free, then delayed for the PS3 indefinitely (but not really). So forgive us if another delay announcement doesn't exactly spark a very violent reaction with us -- we've run this course before. This time, though, both the PC and PS3 versions of the game get held back. While the 360 gets their white dove action on September 5th (in Europe, 14th), the PS3 has to wait until the end of September, slated now for the 25th with a vague October listing for Europe. Still, we should be getting a demo of the title over the PS Store soon, right? With all these delays, it'd be silly not to have that demo up before the game hits. Otherwise, we just might lose interest. Probably not, though, since this game looks pretty slick.[via Joystiq]

  • Stranglehold is gold we're told

Filled to the brim with all the slow motion diving, double-guns blazing action you can stand, Midway has announced that Stranglehold has officially gone gold. The game has gone off to the printers, as it were, and will be making its debut on Xbox 360 on September 5th. By the way, if you absolutely can't wait to get your Stranglehold on, the 360 is your only shot, as the PC version ships on September 18th and the PS3 in "October." If by some coincidence you haven't heard of Stranglehold, it's essentially Max Payne with John Woo flair. It's also decent fun. Don't take our word for it though. Go download the demo and try it for yourself.

Guy with two guns epic Stranglehold is still struggling to get a grip on the PS3 and PC, with both versions facing delays just as the Xbox 360 version sees completion. Inspector Tequila's seething vendetta against neatly stacked grocery stands begins on the Xbox 360 September 5th (September 14th in Europe), with the PC version now following on September 18th in the US and the 21st in Europe. Shacknews reports that the PS3 version of the bullet bonanza is now scheduled for release on September 25th, which translates to an imprecise "October" for Europe.

There's nothing more indicative of gamer culture than the fact that a bunch of us got together at a fan event, with games to be played right over in the exhibition hall, to talk about business. We can't help it! We love sales numbers and such.Vlad Ceraldi and Steve Bocska from Hothead, Steve Bowler from Midway, and David Freeman from Sabertooth Games held a panel to talk about licensed games yesterday at PAX. All of these individuals have unique qualifications to talk about the subject: the two Hothead representatives, in addition to working on Penny Arcade Adventures now, previously worked on last generation's Simpsons games. Bowler worked on NBA Ballers and is now on John Woo Presents Stranglehold, and Freeman juggles licenses in his work with Sabertooth's Universal Fighting System card game.

Midway has confirmed to Joystiq that guy with two guns epic, Stranglehold, has been delayed past its initial August 27th release date on Xbox 360 and PC. John Woo's thoughtful study into the nature of exploding watermelons will now release on September 5th, with the PlayStation 3 version still following on September 17th. If you're clueless about Stranglehold or just have an urge to crush goons beneath suspiciously tethered neon signs, we'd recommend you have a look at the demo currently on the Xbox Live Marketplace.[Thanks, Kyleia and Justin]

  • Stranglehold delayed, thugs thankful

You know, with a badass like inspector Tequila on the case, we imagine that the Hong Kong thugs are thanking their lucky stars that Stranglehold has been delayed. Xbox 360 gamers, on the other hand, probably not so pleased. Before you collectively turn your local game shop into a pile of debris that John Woo would be proud of, you should know that the game has only been delayed by just over a week. Originally promised for August 27th, GameStop is now informing customers that the game has been pushed to September 5th. See, that's not so bad, is it? You can take that, right? Just promise us you won't go all slo-mo and shoot up the place, m'kay?[Thanks, Peter R. and Kyleia]

This past week had all three of Penny Arcade's comic had to do with 360 titles, namely Stranglehold's demo, BioShock's demo and street date breakery. Soft Targets gives insight into the Precision Tequila Bomb, and Gabe's definition of "headshot," and the Achievement that should be awarded for proficiency therein. Our Continuing Series is a public service announcement to parents and the dangers of their kids splicing with plasmids. Finally, A Dark Recipe goes to show the lengths at which Tycho would go to secure a copy of Bioshock before the street date, obviously he didn't hear about our contest.Read: Soft TargetsRead: Our Continuing SeriesRead: A Dark Recipe

Midway has been showing off a bunch more of their Tequila-infused shooter, Stranglehold, and GameVideos has three of the videos showing previously unseen levels. Embedded above is a video of the Garden level, showing off more wide-open environment than we've seen in previous vids. The gameplay doesn't seem to work as well in the open area as it does in the more closed off places, but still looks pretty solid. Just a little too reminiscent of Max Payne.Hit the jump for two more videos showing off the Restaurant and Garage levels.

  • Stranglehold PS3 still coming to Europe this year [update]

    by
    Ross Miller

    08.09.2007

Update: Alright, that's enough of this "delay" rubbish. Though still due out August 27 for Xbox 360 and PC, and on September 17 for PlayStation 3 in the US, some confusion has arisen regarding the European version of John Woo's Stranglehold. Dutch site PS3 Only obtained a statement from Midway that didn't feature a release date but noted (translation via N4G) that the game is "definitely [coming] out this year." That's the news -- the misinterpretation implied a delay to the European PS3 release. 1UP confirms that Stranglehold for the PlayStation 3 has not been delayed and will retain its September 17 release date. The lack of a release date in the European Midway statement was simply due to human error (those humans are always messing things up). Our sincerest apologies for the confusion -- we've been tasked with cleaning the repeatedly destroyed fruit stalls in your favorite action film.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Stranglehold NOT delayed indefinitely for PS3 [UPDATE]

    08.09.2007

[UPDATE] 1Up is now reporting that Midway goofed. Someone forgot to add the PS3 release date to the press release. The game is not delayed. Anywhere. Look for it on shelves on September 17th. No, not the sort of "delayed indefinitely" that really means it's been cancelled. The PC and Xbox 360 versions are still due out for the 27th of August but a PS3 release date was suspiciously absent from the press release. Dutch site PS3Only.com contacted Midway for a statement. They replied saying that Stranglehold is "definitely out this year" but it has "no confirmed street date as yet."We're a bit confused about why this would happen, but we're not as disheartened as you might expect. The estimated release date before the delay was September 17th. We'll still be incredibly busy with Lair and Heavenly Sword at that point. Still, it's not a good precedent to set. This sort of thing had better not become a trend.[Via N4G]

Right now, available on the Xbox Live Marketplace to all countries except Germany, is an action packed demo for John Woo's upcoming game Stranglehold. The Stranglehold demo weighs in at a rather hefty 1.28GB and features a taste of the campaign's Hong Kong marketplace gameplay as well as some intense combat and shooting fun. We advise giving the the demo a try to see if the "cinematic firefights" are something that are worth dropping your jaw over or if you can live up to John Woo's badass'icity. Go ahead, make Mr. Woo's day.

There's a demo for Stranglehold, the video game sequel to John Woo's Hard Boiled, now on Xbox Live, and we couldn't be more excited. And it's not just that its cinematic gun battles are a little bit of fresh air after being locked in the hot station wagon that is the summer game release schedule. We're also really excited, if only for a few moments, to get to be Chow Yun-Fat, uncanny valley be damned. And honestly, if you're going to be Chow Yun-Fat, Hard Boiled Chow Yun-Fat is the one to be, though Better Tomorrow Chow Yun-Fat would have also been acceptable. Can you imaging having to play as Anna and the King Chow Yun-Fat? Or even The Postmodern Life of My Aunt Chow Yun-Fat? We probably wouldn't even download the demo for that. ... Oh, who are we kidding? It's summer, we'll play anything.

  • Stranglehold becomes region-free (as it should be)

    08.04.2007

With its $30 million budget, Stranglehold may be one of the most expensive games ever made. Ever since we played the game at E3, we've been somewhat enamored by this John Woo-inspired effort. The PS3 Collector's Edition, which includes a Blu-ray version of "Hard Boiled," is what we're keeping our eye on.After upsetting some of its fan base by announcing the game would be region protected, Midway has listened to the consumer and has removed region protection from the PS3 version of the game -- even the version with the movie on it! "Please be clear that the Collector's Edition with the movie is only available in North America, so if you live elsewhere, you'll have to buy it as an import. I guess the higher ups do listen to you guys on the forums!"[Via NeoGAF]
