var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playstation_3/PS3s_Stranglehold_coming_with_Woos_Hard_Boiled_in_HD'; Good news for PS3 owners, and a synergistic slap in the face to Xbox 360 lovers: the PlayStation 3 Collectors Edition of John Woo's Stranglehold will have the HD Blu-ray version of his classic film (and Chow Yun-Fat's classic firing-two-guns-whilst-jumping-through-the-air starring role) included on the game disc.Midway had to work out a special deal with the Weinstein's Dragon Dynasty imprint, which owns the rights to John Woo's Chinese-language films. They'll be releasing a new special edition of Hard Boiled sometime later this year under that banner, so this may be the only way you can see the movie in HD for some time.Mind you, the fancy version of Stranglehold will cost you $10 on top of your standard "next-gen" fee, resulting in a steep $70 price tag. No word on special features, or if the disc will play in regular Blu-ray players ... but we'll take our game with a shot of Inspector Tequila. Thank you very much.%Gallery-3187%

  • Best Special Edition ever? Stranglehold SE exclusive to the PS3

Wow. After years of videogame special editions including nothing more than a making-of DVD or a lame in-game item, Midway Games has decided to up the ante considerably. Included with the exclusive PS3 special edition of Stranglehold is a full-length high-def remastering of John Woo's greatest movie (and Stranglehold prequel), Hard Boiled.A stunning example of 90's Hong Kong cinema, Hard Boiled pretty much put John Woo on the map. Starring Chow Yun Fat as the hardened Hong Kong cop Tequila, the violent action movie has some of the most memorable shoot-outs in the genre. The finale, a 30 minute gun fight in a crowded hospital remains one of the most intense scenes in an action movie to this very day. A classic in every sense of the word, the movie has had a bumpy release history in the US. The DVD has been out of print for many years, and the Criterion Edition will command prices upwards of 100 dollars on eBay. But now, thanks to Midway, for just 10 extra dollars ($70US total), you can get the special edition of Stranglehold with the first ever HD remastering of Hard Boiled. Suddenly, my interest in this game just went from moderate to INSANE. [via blu-ray.com]

Or else he gonna break yo' neck, man! So, was that intimidating? At all? Well, we've stumbled across some new screenshots of John Woo Presents: Stranglehold and they're looking pretty nice. We have yet to see a ton of white doves flying behind any protagonist, but we're almost certain that those will be edited in to the point where the PS3 will begin to fly, itself. John Woo loves his doves. While all three of the new screens come with that "new" label, we feel like we've seen at least one of them before. Maybe they're just updated and shined up? Perhaps they better reflect a finished product? Maybe we can actually expect more than a handful of titles in the next two months? Come on, John Woo, be the hero and don't leave us hangin' here!

We just got sent the brand new trailer for John Woo's Stranglehold which is set to release early next year on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. What's so special about this video is that it contains footage that is beyond what we've been seeing and playing since E3. Previously, all we got to plant our eyes on and experience was the same restaurant level that Midway has been throwing our way for months.Because of that and a release date delay, we were starting to get worried this title may not make its way to the public. It's a cool concept and controls beautifully, so we'd hate to see it not be released.

By way of Fraggerock, we bring you this video of Stranglehold from the Games Convention in Leipzig. The game, naturally, is wall to wall action. The video shows off the game's many weapons, stylish moves, and some very destructible environments. Players are rewarded for playing stylishly. Play well enough and you'll earn death dealing special moves, or, as I call them, "Instant Doves." If you weren't excited about this game before, this video just might convert you.

If there's one game that will excite you in the right places for the PS3, you can count on it being John Woo Presents Stranglehold. Inspector Tequila (starring Chow Yun-Fat) will jump, spin, kick and shoot your socks off in this "loose followup" to the Hard Boiled series. So here's some good news: PlayStation 3 fans can expect this title on launch day. Come November 17th, it will invade shelves along with the new console. Still no official word on the Xbox 360 or PC release dates, but we're sure you can come up with a reasonable guess.
