We knew that Yakuza 7, or Yakuza: Like a Dragon, was going to shakeup gameplay with turn-based combat. Thanks to a trailer released at Tokyo Game Show, we have a better idea of what that will look like. The gameplay preview shows the new combat style, as well as some insane features and RPG silliness.

Watch 48 minutes of 'Death Stranding' gameplay

What exactly is Death Stranding? Thanks to a deep dive at Tokyo Game Show, we're finally able to answer -- or at least, better answer -- that long-standing question. The 48-minute presentation showed Sam Bridges, played by Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, wandering through more of director Hideo Kojima's eerily quiet world. But this time, we got to see a whole bunch of RPG and exploratory mechanics for the first time. These included the menu screen for picking up orders, fabricating equipment and stacking cargo on Bridges' back. Everything has a weight cost, so you'll have to carefully decide what, and where, to equip before heading out.

You'll soon have another fix if you can't get enough of Kingdom Hearts -- you know, Square Enix's other big RPG franchise. The developer has revealed Re Mind DLC that will continue the Kingdom Hearts 3 story this winter. The teaser doesn't say much about what's coming to PS4 and Xbox One players, but it hints at a new battle form for lead character Sora, trouble for Kairi and a fight with the sinister Organization XIII. You'll find a "familiar realm," but new boss fights and the ability to switch characters in some battles.

Square Enix's recent bout of Final Fantasy nostalgia isn't ending any time soon. The publisher has announced that the remastered Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will reach Android, iOS, PS4 and Switch on January 23rd, 2020. The previously GameCube-only action RPG receives the requisite graphics and audio upgrades to drag it into the modern era (including new voiceovers for combat), but also promises its share of functional improvements over the original.

  • Former Last Guardian devs' teaser trailer is so Vane

Friend and Foe Games offered a teaser trailer for one of its two introductory games this week, Vane. The Tokyo Game Show 2014 trailer shows the game's desert-and-ruins environment, following a bird in flight before observing a shadowy sprinting child. The team of five at Friend and Foe Games includes credits on Team Ico's The Last Guardian, Bionic Commando, Battlefield 3 and the Killzone series. Head past the break to check out the trailer. Announced in June, the game's youthful character has an "odd ability" and is stuck in a "strange land." While the trailer doesn't shed any light on Vane's setting other than it being prone to severe lightning strikes, the child does appear to leap off a platform and morph into a bird near the end of the video. Vane is in development for PC with other consoles to follow and does not currently have a release date. [Image: Friend and Foe Games]

  • Joystiq Weekly: Battlefield Hardline, Watch Dogs review, Evil Within preview and more

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. With Sony upping PlayStation Plus to six games per month, we're pretty confident that the service is trying to ruin our lives. We're not obligated to tackle every single title, of course, but in the cycle of starting downloads for games "just in case" we ever feel an inkling to play them, we're losing track of which games we should feel guilty about not finishing and which games we should feel guilty about paying $60 for and not finishing. If not for the bills, assignments and the omnipresence of life's ever-ticking clock, we'd plop down in front of our TVs for a few years and knock out every game we ever felt intrigued by. To hell with "everything in moderation" - moderation wouldn't clear out our shelves of "yeah, maybe one day" RPGs, nor would it help us get the timing for our go-to Street Fighter combos down to the exact frame. Moderation is just a feeble admission that we can't control time (yet), and it ignores our potential to play all the video games, which we'll definitely get to. Eventually. Some day. Unfortunately, getting through every game we've ever wanted to play is still just a fantasy for now. Unless you find a way to break the laws of life's constants - if you do, you should totally let us know. We can do co-op or something. Until we reach that dream state, you can get a glimpse of Battlefield Hardline, read reviews for Watch Dogs and Among The Sleep, and dig into a neat feature on Watch Dogs that explains how legalities ruin everything. It's all waiting for you after the break!

  • Sony to foot the bill for indie exhibitors at Tokyo Game Show

Furthering its efforts to be seen as the console manufacturer that cares about independent game developers, Sony has announced plans to pay exhibition fees for all games appearing in the Indie Game Area at this September's Tokyo Game Show. There's no word on how many development teams will take Sony up on its offer, but according to the company's announcement, indie developers will be able to appear without any cost to themselves, regardless of which platform their game appears on. Sony claims that it will spend 99,900 yen (about $980) on each indie developer during the first four days of the show, as well as 32,400 yen (about $320) for the final two days, in which the Tokyo Game Show is open to the public. Additionally, Sony has agreed to sponsor the annual Sense of Wonder Night, in which 10 "unprecedented" game ideas will be publicly showcased for their originality. Indie developers suddenly itching to attend TGS should keep a few caveats in mind. First, Sony is only allowing developers to exhibit their games at these gratis booths. No one in the Indie Game Area will be allowed to sell their wares directly to visitors. Further, only 50 booths will appear in the Indie Game Area. If you're interested, you should get your application to the TGS Management Office as soon as possible. [Image: Wikimedia Commons]

Sony announced a November release date for the PlayStation 4 companion app for iOS and Android along with its new console at the Tokyo Game Show 2013, reports Polygon. The PlayStation App will launch on November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe. The PlayStation App lets you use your iOS (including the iPad) or Android device as a game controller or use it as a second screen, if that feature is enabled in a particular title. You will be able to download games remotely and the app includes social networking features, such as Twitter and Facebook. In addition, the PS4 will include Twitch support, which is a "live internet-streaming service devoted to video gaming," according to Sony's press release. Users speculate that the iOS or Android device will connect via WiFi, as it is more stable than Bluetooth, but that information has yet to be made available by Sony. • Tokyo Game Show theme this year is 'GAMES: Limitless Evolution'

Tokyo Game Show's annual tagline for 2013 is significantly less wacky when compared to those used in previous years, and we're kinda bummed out about it. Whereas other TGS events have been embodied by excellent phrases like "GAME: Dancing Your Heart" and "Game, it's so energetic!" this year's slogan is "GAMES: Limitless Evolution," which is lacking a certain je ne sais quoi. Japanese artist Ippei Gyoubu's female personification of the event (full-size here) is as fantastic as ever, though: "In this year's main visual," the announcement reads, "character 'She' who is the core of games wears a wide variety of devices and tools as parts and she is now going to transform herself into 'something' beyond the reach of imagination to dynamically represent 'GAMES: Limitless Evolution' which is the main theme of Tokyo Game Show 2013." The conference will take place between September 19 and 22 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, where officials expect an estimated 200,000 visitors. Last year, the Tokyo Game Show broke its previous attendance records by drawing a total of 223,753 folks over the course of four days.

  • Resident Evil 6 TGS trailer shows drama in action

We can't tell you how much of a relief this trailer is. Finally, someone in Hollywood has the vision to make a Resident Evil movie that actually resembles the video games, and it looks to be an action-packed gore fest to rival Liam Neeson's latest – wait, what? This is a trailer for Resident Evil 6, the video game, and not a high-budget action-drama flick? Huh.Well, if you can't have a movie like the game, might as well make the game more like a movie. The above trailer comes directly from the Tokyo Game Show, where it was shown exclusively at Capcom's booth. That must have been intense.

During the Tokyo Game Show Namco Bandai announced a new game in the Macross series called Macross 30. The game will launch some time in 2013.The lone detail known about the game is that its theme song will be sung by Haruka Chisuga, the winner of the 2012 "Miss Macross 30" competition. Had we been aware of the competition that bears the name of the new game, this Macross 30 announcement would have been less of a surprise.

  • Tokyo Game Show 2012 wrap-up: Sony's new PS3, 'Prototype-SR' and assorted gaming peripherals

After a few humid and sweaty days in Tokyo, TGS 2012 is drawing to a close. While the public days continue through the weekend, us media types are headed back to our respective homelands until next September. The lasting impression from the week -- aside from eating massive amounts of gyoza -- will undoubtedly be the news Sony dropped the day before the show started at its own press event. A new, even slimmer PS3 is on the way and two new colors for the PS Vita were outed -- at least for Japan. On the show floor, though, we encountered some peripherals well-suited for other gaming tech like Nintendo's 3DS XL, Xbox 360 and PC rigs. You can peek at those for yourself in the Sony Tokyo Game Show gallery that follows and relive all the action in the wrap-up that lies just beyond the break. Also, don't forget to check out our pals over at Joystiq for more coverage from this week's happenings. %Gallery-166241%

  • Neurowear wants to read your mind, geotag your feelings (video)

Geotagging your photos? Old hat -- Neurowear wants to geotag your mood. The folks that brought animated cat ears to the human race is now using NeuroSky's brainwave-reading headgear to suss out your emotional state and share it with your friends. We dropped in on the group at Tokyo Game Show to take a look at an early prototype. After strapping a familiar Mindwave mobile headset to this editor's skull, a companion iPhone app sprung to life, reading off relaxation levels and assigning cartoon faces to the user's mood. The reading could then be recorded on a map, tagging how the user felt at a given location and time and allowing them to share that information with their friends. Had a great time at a new coffee shop? Now you can prove it, and encourage your social contacts to join you. It's an interesting idea, but its still a long way from hitting the app store -- the demo we were given was only a concept app, and the geotagging portion of the demonstration was simulated. It may be awhile before you can tweet your feelings directly. Need another way to express yourself? Don't worry -- Nerosky is adding a brainwave controlled tail, dubbed Shippo, to its line of cranium controlled animal parts. Check it out (as well as our quick neurotagging demo) after the break. %Gallery-166239%

  • Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL spotted at TGS, we go hands-on (video)

    by

    09.20.2012

Nintendo is starting to make a habit of quietly releasing products at trade-shows they don't attend. Kyoto's premiere gaming outfit still isn't present on the TGS show floor, but Capcom has once again seen fit to trot out the firm's latest kit: The Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL. Just like last year's model, this beefy cradle puts the already large 3DS XL outside the realm of pocket-ability, trading the handheld's slim profile for a luxuriously thick grip. Indeed, the fatty accessory makes the console quite comfortable to hold, adding a smooth, slightly contoured back, larger shoulder buttons and, of course, that all important starboard analog pad. The new Circle Pad's bulk is slightly more forgivable for the size of its host device. Yes, the attachment makes the XL a bit more unwieldily, but its supersized form already made it a non-contender for most pants pockets. Sadly, the accessory still sports its predecessor's greatest fault: it blocks the 3DS' cartridge slot. Gamers will have to get used to undocking their console, or else make a habit of buying more downloadable titles. Mum's still the word on pricing and availability, but the accessory was shown with a copy of Monster Hunter 4, which is due out in March of next year. We wouldn't be surprised to see it show up in early spring. Hungry for more? Check out our gallery below for an eyeful, or peek past the break for quick video overview. %Gallery-166218%

Depending on your interest in consoles, you may have heard of the new streamlined PlayStation 3 that was revealed at the Tokyo Game Show. What you may not have heard is that it will come out in a limited edition bundle that includes $30 of bonus digital content for DUST 514. DUST 514 is receiving some publicity because of this bundle, which certainly can't hurt the upcoming release of CCP's MMOFPS. Players who purchase the $270 console bundle will receive a copy of Uncharted 3 and a voucher to use in DUST 514. The voucher will give players content worth "more than $30" of bonus content, although what said content is has not been specified.

  • Sharp and Fujitsu join PlayStation Certified program, PS Mobile SDK available this November

Move over HTC -- both Sharp and Fujitsu are joining Sony's PlayStation Certified program, allowing games in the PlayStation Mobile marketplace to be purchased and played on various portable devices from the two hardware manufacturers. In Fujitsu's case, its ARROW series of smartphones and tablets will carry the PlayStation Mobile titles, while Sharp isn't getting specific just yet. Beyond the partnership announcement, Sony's PlayStation Mobile SDK comes out of beta this November and becomes available for any developer. Licences cost $100/year, and the SDK becomes available on a region-by-region basis starting with Japan, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, allowing for cross platform development on PlayStation Certified devices and the Vita. Update: The PlayStation Mobile store will launch on October 3rd in nine countries, including Japan, the US, Canada and the UK, carrying 30 titles on the opening day, with more coming as they roll off the production line.

  • PS Vita and PS3 cross-buy: more discounts, less freebies

    09.19.2012

Sony's PS3 / Vita cross-buy program might not be as simple as "buy one, get one" after all. Taking the stage at its pre-TGS press event, Sony announced a new Hot Shots Golf game as one of the program's first adopters -- citing a price reduction, rather then a free game, for users who pick up either the PS3 / Vita version of the title. In contrast, Sony stated at Gamescom that buyers of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault would receive a second copy of the game for free upon purchase, indicating that cross-buy discounts may vary from title to title. Remember kids: just because you bought it once, doesn't mean you won't have to buy it again.
