Warface. Warface never changes. Except when it does, such as how it's gone into closed beta today in anticipation of a spring launch. Trion Worlds and Crytek announced that the online shooter has now progressed into the beta phase, where it'll stay for the time being. Crytek General Manager Publishing Dirk Metzger says that players should be drooling over this ridiculously good-looking title: "We look forward to making the experience even more engaging as waves of pre-registered players are invited to join the closed beta and play their part in shaping Warface ahead of its final launch." The studio describes Warface as taking part in "a vast and frequently updated PvE universe." If you're interested in joining the beta test, you can apply on Warface's site. It's a gloomy day for Trion Worlds, as word has come down that the independent developer is handing out pink slips to some of its staff. The studio confirmed the layoffs in an official statement: As a response to market conditions, product timelines and the natural evolution of our company, we have made some organizational changes, which include a workforce reduction. This was a difficult decision and we wish the best for those affected by these changes. At Trion, we remain focused on delivering top quality online game experiences, and are committed to supporting RIFT and launching our highly anticipated new titles Defiance, Warface, and End of Nations in 2013. Twitter was ablaze over the subject, saying that as many as 30 people were let go. One staff member wrote, "I managed to survive this time. Lots of REALLY good people got let go though." Another indicated which jobs were lost: "Not a good day. If anyone has a lead for a Sr. EQ or Assistant Lead QA job, please let me know." Trion recently brought End of Nations in-house after Petroglyph suffered its own round of layoffs. [Source: Trion Worlds press statement]

Warface, Crytek's free-to-play social FPS currently live in Russia, has a deal to launch in western markets, published by Trion Worlds. Warface will hit North America, Europe, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand through Gface, Crytek's social gaming network, and the Trion Platform.Warface has two million registered users in Russia. This marks Crytek's grand entrance into the freemium era, after CEO Cevat Yerli announced in June that all future projects from Crytek will be F2P. The budget for Warface and each of Crytek's other F2P titles is "between $10 million to $30 million... but at the price-point of $0 entry," Yerli said.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli revealed that all future projects from the company will be free-to-play, according to an interview with VideoGamer.com. Yerli noted that "the future is online and free-to-play," and that the company is in a transitional phase, focusing future games and platforms around those models after completing current contracts for games in development.Crytek's first game to venture into the free-to-play market is Warface, first introduced to Asian regions in late 2010 and coming to North America in 2012. Yerli cited Warface as an example of future titles from the company, which "implies budgets of between $10 million to $30 million... but at the price-point of $0 entry."Yerli explained that the free-to-play business model is the most user-friendly, as opposed to premium content structures. "If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it's literally milking the customers to death," he said.Crytek's free-to-play games will be supported by its game streaming network Gface, which went into beta in February.

Holy carp there was a lot going on in shooter circles this week! Between the news blurbs, videos, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. memories (yes, I said S.T.A.L.K.E.R, and damn that takes a long time to type), there was nearly enough information for two editions of The Firing Line. Luckily for you (and for my overworked editor), I managed to keep the word count down. Let's not kid ourselves, though; there's plenty of interesting stuff after the cut. Join me for the latest on dueling World War II aviation MMOs, a new free-to-play shooter from Crytek, the requisite PlanetSide 2 lovefest, and some official dev answers to last week's Taikodom question.

  • Hold on, UE3! Crytek is 'investigating' Flash for CryEngine, 'cross-platform solution' reveal soon

Sounds like we weren't the only ones impressed by Epic Games' announcement of Flash support for the ubiquitous Unreal Engine 3. The crosstown engine peddlers at Crytek have been "looking into supporting Flash" in CryEngine, Edge reports, and will announce a "truly cross-platform solution" soon. With UE3 now supporting Flash, in addition to Mac OS, iOS, Android, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, CryEngine's support of just the big three is beginning to look a tad anemic. "It is an interesting approach we've been investigating as well," Carl Jones, director of global business development for CryEngine, said of Epic's announcement. "We're developing a unifying technology to create high quality social and gaming experiences on all platforms including browser, smartphones, tablets, etc. We hope to be able to tell you more about it soon when we present our truly cross-platform solution." With Crytek Seoul hard at work on the free-to-play FPS Warface, it's not surprising to learn that Crytek is looking to broaden the potential audience for its games as much as possible. What's next, Crysis on your console? Oh ...

Late last month, Crytek revealed its free-to-play FPS for Asian markets, Warface. Today, the developer announced that Tencent has purchased the publishing rights for China and plans to rename the title for that territory. The new Chinese title has yet to be presented. The game runs on CryEngine 3 and offers several different classes, gameplay modes, as well as co-op missions. Hit the jump for some gameplay footage. %Gallery-108299%

Free-to-play in-your-face FPS news now, with Crytek's announcement of a new military shooter "especially dedicated" to Korean and other Asian markets. Powered by CryEngine 3, Warface will serve as the developer's entry into the freemium arena, and a chilling reminder of that poor kid you teased in high school about his terrible, uncontrollable acne. That was me, by the way, and I know where you live now. Warface is co-produced by Crytek Seoul, and will debut on PC in South Korea with class-based, player-versus-player modes, as well as "dramatic" multiplayer co-op missions. Just try to hold the tears back -- it ruins the camo face paint. %Gallery-108299%
