Today, let's take a moment to stop and revel in how amazing, terrifying and grand the world is. Our lives are composed of dark, light and every shade in between. That's why, when we get serious shade thrown our way, we can absorb it and move on. Welcome to Barely Related, a conversational Friday column that presents the non-gaming news stories that we, the Joystiq staff, have been talking about over the past week. And no, we're not stopping our focus on industry and gaming news. Think of this as your casual weekly recap of interesting (and mostly geeky) news, presented just in time to fill your brain with things to discuss at all of those weekend shindigs. Grab a fresh drink, lean back in your armchair, and get ready to talk nerdy with us.

As if any superhero could exist in a fighting game without his or her perennial antagonist to become embattled against, Shazam's ancient Egyptian arch-enemy, Black Adam, has been revealed as a playable character in Injustice: Gods Among Us.As seen in the solitary screenshot above, Black Adam shares Shazam's lightning-bolt motif, which makes sense considering that they were both given their powers by the same wizard, who was also named "Shazam." Additionally, Black Adam has to say "Shazam!" in order to activate his magical powers, which embody aspects of the Egyptian gods Shu, Heru, Amon, Zehuti, Aton and Mehen, or S.H.A.Z.A.M. Comic books, everybody.

Riddle me this: what do an ex-Buffy villain, Wonder Woman, and Black Adam have in common? The answer is, not much, aside from the fact that they're all starring in a pair of new DC Universe Online promotional videos. Now, before any purists get up in arms, the ex-Buffy villain in question is James Marsters, better to known to some as the vampire Spike. While he won't be bringing his fangs and smashing British accent to Metropolis or Gotham City, he will be voicing the nefarious Lex Luthor, and SOE has released a two minute clip featuring gameplay footage and interviews with the actor. Wonder Woman and Black Adam take center stage in the second clip, which focuses on the iconic armor suits available to players in the game. Whether your DC legend is a hero or a villain, unlocking the power and prestige of one of these endgame suits looks to be one the game's progression goals according to the video narrated by game director Chris Cao.

Anti-hero following a strange ethical code, or power-crazed villain? Either way you look at it, today's unveiling of Black Adam as the newest character in DC Universe Online doesn't bode very well for metahumans on either side. Originally introduced as a character in 1945 and later retconned, Adam was granted his powers by the wizard Shazam during the time of Rameses the second. Once Shazam realizes the enormity of his mistake in unleashing the insanely powerful -- and evil -- Teth-Adam ("Mighty Adam") upon the world, he tricks his evil protege. Having placed Teth-Adam's spirit in a scarab to save the world, the old wizard goes into hiding. He resurfaces over 3,000 years later and decides to try one last time to pass his heroic powers of Shazam on to a young man named Billy Batson -- or Captain Marvel, as you may know him. %Gallery-92999%
