Europe's seasonal batch of PlayStation Plus freebies comprises Borderlands 2, DmC: Devil May Cry, Soul Sacrifice, and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, and in what's very much a case of Christmas coming a day early, they'll all arrive on December 24. PlayStation 4 owners have to wait a bit longer for their next Plus-wrapped pressie, because Klei's survival forager Don't Starve is due on January 8 - it'll probably hit North America the day before, but a release date hasn't been confirmed. It's a cracking line-up of games to dig into on Christmas Eve - forget all that quality time with family nonsense, amirite? However, Christmas isn't just a time of giving, but also a time of taking, in this case games removed from the Plus service: Grid 2, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, and Sonic and Allstars Racing Transformed head off on December 24, while PS4 platformer Contrast exits stage left on January 8. One final bit of PlayStation Europe news: The 12 Deals of Christmas continues to chuck discounts at continentals, with Battlefield 4 bombing to £25 (€35/AU$45) and The Walking Dead on Vita sliced to £7 (€10/AU$15) - with a further 10 percent off the latter for PS Plus members. If those deals take your fancy, you have until the end of tomorrow to grab them.

Finally, the complex and compelling story of BlazBlue is getting the anime treatment with BlazBlue Alter Memory. According to Anime News Network, the story centers on Ragna the Bloodedge – you might know him as "humongous sword guy" – and the ragtag gang of pugilists determined to collect the bounty on his head. Somehow, a fox lady, a little vampire girl and a weird, anthropomorphic cat person figure in there as well. BlazBlue Alter Memory is set to launch this fall.

My experience with BlazBlue doesn't stretch beyond a few hours with the Xbox 360 version of the original, dramatically subtitled Calamity Trigger. Having pumped a few more hours into BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, I can at least confirm that it remains a beautiful and eminently playable fighter with lots to offer and plenty to keep players busy.%Gallery-136395%

  • Japanese BlazBlue tournament wants to humiliate US players

Aksys Games is hosting BlazBlue Revolution, the world's largest BlazBlue tournament, early next year in Japan, and it wants the best three-person team from the United States to be there, enough to offer them full airfare to Japan, complimentary hotel stay and a special monetary prize exclusive to the U.S. team if it wins. The U.S. tournament will be Feb. 25 in southern California, with the finals in Japan on March 24. The BlazBlue Revolution prize is still "to be announced," but if the U.S. wins it will definitely get that special bonus prize -- emphasis on if. With all this hype to get a U.S. team to a Japanese tournament for a Japanese game, we think this may be a clever ploy to show us yanks just how terrible we truly are at motherland fighting games. We try, Japan. We try. If you're brave enough to compete (or if you want a free trip to Japan), read the details below and check the BlazBlue Revolution site on Dec. 17 for more information.

Back at E3, Aksys mentioned it was open to the possibility of offering BlazBlue as a PlayStation Vita launch title. Today, the company announced BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend is coming to North America and will be available simultaneously on PlayStation Vita, PS3 and Xbox 360. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend will feature balance tweaks for the entire roster of characters -- which includes previous DLC-only fighters, a new character, and complete story modes for these guys -- plus some online tweaks. There are also some new single-player modes to indulge in, such as Abyss mode and Unlimited Mars mode. As for the latter, no, we don't think it just plays Total Recall on loop. Sorry. %Gallery-136395% %Gallery-136396%

At E3, we saw a PlayStation Vita version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2. Arc System Works has now officially announced that version, along with new PS3 and Xbox 360 games based on the same revision of the HD arcade fighter. Due in Japan this winter, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend adds a new playable character, Relius, new online modes, and all the DLC from the previous console release, among other tweaks. The PS3 and PlayStation Vita versions will share save data for use in the story mode, but Arc System Works has yet to determine whether they'll be able to interact directly in multiplayer. All three versions will be playable at Tokyo Game Show, if you happen to be nearby and want an early look.
