  • 'VC' Friday: WiiWare takes over again

For the second time in three weeks, those rapscallions at Nintendo have decided to forgo releasing old, lovable Virtual Console games and have instead opted for WiiWare. Grr. Still, at least it means that Europe and Australia get Arkanoid-style puzzler Block Breaker Deluxe, which we deemed to be rather good, despite its cast of grinning, lifestyle pillocks. At the other end of the quality pool bobs the questionable floating object that is Cocoto Fishing Master, which we wouldn't buy for our worst enemies. When Pong evolved, we got Breakout. When Breakout evolved, we got Arkanoid. Then, when Arkanoid evolved, we got ... Block Breaker Deluxe? Not that we'd call Block Breaker Deluxe revolutionary in any way, even though it's fun to play. Take Breakout, slap on some tacky '80s visuals, then throw in '70s disco/porn music for good measure, and you pretty much know what to expect from Gameloft's WiiWare offering.

The Nintendo Channel has received its weekly infusion of new videos. Sure, the weekly updates usually feature more videos than this, and the Samba de Amigo trailer is actually one we've already seen, but there's interesting new stuff contained within. Especially if you want to see what Block Breaker Deluxe looks like without having to buy the thing. Aside from the WiiWare videos, this week's update is entirely musical. The aforementioned Samba de Amigo trailer is still enjoyable, and two other trailers focus on upcoming Guitar Hero games: the new DS iteration and the Aerosmith version. Far too often we don't know what the heck we're looking at when we load up the new WiiWare entries for the week, so it's nice to see some familiar names this week. You're sure to remember Block Breaker Deluxe from its appearance on cell phones all over this great land. And Cocoto Fishing Master originally appeared on the PS2. Welcome home, guys, welcome home. Block Breaker Deluxe (Gameloft, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): They say: "Prepare for the frenzy of the coolest block-breaker game ever. Block Breaker Deluxe is a reinvention of the classic arcade brick-breaker game with a trendy graphical style, fun atmosphere and an exclusive multiplayer mode. Lively characters and amazing graphics provide distinctive settings of the jet-set nightlife, including a cool bar, dance club, casino and more." We say: If you wanted to pay $8 to play Arkanoid, you should just invent a time machine and go buy it in the Sears bargain bin in 1986. Cocoto Fishing Master (Neko Entertainment, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 700 Wii Points): They say: "Welcome to the adventures of Cocoto, Fishing Master. Get ready for a completely new experience on Wii. Play the role of Cocoto and travel the world to find five millennial fish. Only they can stop the magic cauldron from overflowing with lava and prevent the world from being destroyed. Thanks to Cocoto Fishing Master for Wii, fishing has never been such fun. Use the Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™ controllers like a real fishing rod to catch more than 30 different fish." We say: At least it's a buck cheaper than Arkanoids: Urban Nights.

  • Block Breaker Deluxe breaks out onto Japanese WiiWare

In what may be Japan's only WiiWare release for May (much like Minna de Puzzloop was the only April release), Gameloft's Block Breaker Deluxe is now available for download in Japan. For 800 points, Japanese gamers can now play a decent-looking Breakout/Arkanoid clone with a neon visual theme and goofy images of "cool" people that make it look so much like a cell-phone game (which it was). Or Miami Nights. We'd like to see this one soon within the U.S. launch of WiiWare, because we're perfectly willing to overlook all the posing jerks -- and the inauspicious origin of the game -- for a chance at a new big-screen Breakout game.[Via Inside-Games]

We know we had a WiiWare-centric Wii Warm Up recently, but with all the news of some new games hitting WiiWare that we weren't all aware of before (uh, hello Alien Crush sequel), we felt the topic needed to be revisited. Of course, we don't have to tell you how excited we all are for the sequel to Alien Crush. What about you all, though? What WiiWare title excites you most? Are you down with the sequel like we are, or are you looking forward to something else? Tetris, perhaps? Dr. Mario? Block Breaker Deluxe? Where do you stand right now?

  • Gameloft phoning in more WiiWare ports

Well, actually, they're remaking cell phone games, but the title kinda works. We actually approve of the population of the WiiWare service with new games from anybody. Mobile developer Gameloft has announced three more WiiWare games in addition to Block Breaker Deluxe. TV Show King is actually an original made-for-WiiWare quiz show game. Midnight Pool and Midnight Bowling are, well, pool and bowling games that use motion controls. Gameloft intends to release games in Japan, Europe, and the U.S.TV Show King sounds like a great idea to us -- a trivia game with a low barrier to entry (price). We could totally see ourselves downloading something like that while bored some night or in preparation for a party or something. [Via Siliconera]

  • Wii getting cell phone shovelware, thanks Gameloft

In companies' rush to capitalize on the industry's fascination with waggle, the Wii has become no stranger to games we'd sooner use to prop up the short leg of our coffee table than play. Much as it seems counterintuitive, novelty has not been par the course for the console so much as it has been quick cash-ins, though we continue to look to the Wii's digital download service WiiWare as the platform's saving grace. It seems, however, that even WiiWare will not be immune to its share of shovelware, with mobile game developer-publisher Gameloft planning to use the service as a receptacle for cell phone games. We wouldn't mind so much if the company had originality on the brain, but its first effort, a Breakout clone going by the name of Block Breaker Deluxe, doesn't give us much hope. The download will be released in Japan in April before launching in other regions at a later date, giving us one to watch out for, if only to know what to avoid once WiiWare launches in North America on May 12.[Via Wii Fanboy]

  • Gameloft brings cell phone gaming to WiiWare

Gameloft Japan has announced a new WiiWare game, a Breakout/Arkanoid-style game called Block Breaker Deluxe, to be released in Japan in April, with U.S. and European releases to follow. It looks perfectly adequate for an $8 WiiWare game -- we like Breakout, and this one has powerups and stuff -- but two aspects of this game serve as sticking points.First, Block Breaker Deluxe is a remake of a cell phone game. Is Gameloft really setting this precedent one day after the launch of the service? This is, frankly, alarming. Second, for whatever reason, Gameloft decided that eye candy, in the form of some "sexy" female mascots, would be a good idea for the Arkanoid knockoff. This only has the effect of making us feel uncomfortable about buying it.

Gameloft debuted their new iPod game called "Block Breaker Deluxe" last night on the iTunes Store. This game puts a twist on the older "Breakout" game. The game is compatible with iPod nano (3rd gen), iPod Classic, and iPod with video (5th gen) only. "We revamped the graphics of Block Breaker Deluxe for iPod to make it the most feature-rich, action packed wall breaker game ever created," said Gameloft. This isn't Gameloft's first iPod game, as you may recall, they have also created Brain Challenge and the LOST game. You can download the new "Block Breaker Deluxe" from the iTunes Music Store's game section for $4.99 (US).
