  • CD Projekt RED talks tentative Cyberpunk 2077 launch window, 'other project' in secret message

If there are two things we love around the Joystiq office, it's clandestine communication techniques and robot ladies with big praying mantis-style arm blades. Obviously, we were chuffed to bits when Cyberpunk 2077's ultra-stylized teaser trailer gave us a big ol' dose of the latter, but it turns the former was in there as well, waiting to chuff our bits even further.A single frame at the end of the trailer contains a message from developer CD Projekt, which states that the game's release date is "currently scheduled way off in 2015, but in truth the delivery date is more like 'when it's done,'" which was the "date" officially given in the trailer. The missive goes on to say that CD Projekt's "other project," which is also a "fully open-world game with an intense story," is much closer to completion and that further information will be delivered on Tuesday, February 5. Here's hoping said information is contained within a floppy disk buried in a secret location that can only be discovered by dialing into a BBS, whose number can only be found by decoding the hexagon string written in Morse code on a scroll strapped to the leg of a pigeon. But which pigeon?!

Cyberpunk 2077, the next game from The Witcher developer CD Projekt RED, slows things down for its first teaser trailer, showing off the public dangers of wrist-scythe implants. The video introduces the Night City police and the elite takedown force known colloquially as the Psycho Squad, whose duty is to exterminate "psychos," people who take body modification too far and lose their humanity.Psychos overdose on implants and substances until eventually their bodies reject all things biological; they refer to humans as "meatbags" and embark on killing sprees like the one above. The Psycho Squad takes them out when the standard police can't cope.Remember, kids: You're beautiful just as you are, and no amount of giant blades sprouting from your arms will change that. Cyberpunk 2077 is slated to drop "when it's ready," as the teaser says.

  • Mac Game of the Week: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Most of the games I've covered for this feature so far have come down on the casual side of things, mostly iOS titles that have made their way over to the Mac App Store. But not so with this pick -- The Witcher 2 is a great game, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart (or GPU power). CD Projekt's epic RPG famously made its way to the Mac a few weeks ago, and we're definitely glad to have the game (and the company) on our platform. But this is a high-end game that comes from a genre background that doesn't just enjoy complexity, it revels in it. The Witcher 2 is part of the tradition of European PC RPGs, which offer up hundreds of hours of notoriously twisty quests and story lines, and lots of combat and crafting mechanics. The game definitely follows in this tradition, telling the continued story of Geralt, a "Witcher" who's been trained and conditioned to fight monsters in all of their forms. The plot starts with Geralt being accused of the assassination of a king, and then winds out from there, with multiple branching paths and options to take. Combat is open -- Geralt can cast spells or slash away with a sword as he sees fit, and as with a lot of these RPGs, there are multiple schools of magic and lots of different specializations to choose from. The Witcher 2 is as far from a small, casual undertaking as it gets. It offers up a huge experience, and will likely demand that you're running a very fast Mac to play it on. If you're interested in a vast, sprawling story with the gameplay chops to keep it interesting all the way through, definitely give it a look. You can buy it from Steam or directly from CD Projekt's GOG.com site for US$29.99.

CD Projekt RED's in-development future-RPG Cyberpunk is now Cyberpunk 2077, the developer has just announced during a GOG livestream. Beyond its new title, the game was also revealed to be a sandbox game set in Night City, a location from the original Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop pen-and-paper RPG on which the new game is based.Cyberpunk 2077's official website launched today as well, containing a development blog and wallpaper-sized pictures of a blood-spattered half-naked robot women with blades coming out of her arms. Think there's a dexterity penalty for using those things?

Everyone's favorite DRM-free digital games distributor, Good Old Games, is now offering support for just over 50 games on Mac OS-based machines. That means that classics like Syndicate and the Wing Commander series are now offered through the service, not to mention new classics like Botanicula and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. To kick off the launch, GOG's offering a variety of discounts (including 50 percent off of SimCity 2000 -- a no brainer if you ask us), as well as an Apple-flavored commercial that we've dropped below the break. If you haven't already headed over to GOG and started madly purchasing things, we'd suggest watching the tongue-in-cheek trailer, for the chuckles alone.

CD Projekt RED has enough announcements to fill up an entire Facebook wall post, and is streaming a live Special Event on October 18 at 2 p.m. ET, with news regarding Cyberpunk, The Witcher 2 modders and Mac users. The stream will be available on The Witcher Facebook page and on GOG.com.CD Projekt RED will announce the official name of its Cyberpunk project, hopefully as something that doesn't sound like a dangling adjective when spoken. Mac users can expect "a bunch of thrilling announcements" and details about The Witcher 2 on OSX. Last we heard, The Witcher 2 was scheduled to hit Mac this fall.Modding news may involve the REDkit mod tools program, which is accepting beta applications through September 30.The Special Event also includes news from GOG.com: GOG will officially announce plans to bring its lineup of classic PC games to "a new operating system," which we can only assume is Gentoo. OK, fine – it's probably OSX.

  • Recent retail listings for first Witcher on consoles a 'mistake'

The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was never coming to consoles this year, according to Adam Badowski, managing director at developer CD Projekt Red. Back in May, retail listings for the game, popularly believed to be deceased, popped up on a Danish retail site and Blockbuster.dk."It's not true; that's a mistake. It's not even rumor, it's a mistake," Badowski told us at Gamescom. Asked if the console version was, in fact, cancelled three years ago he definitively exclaimed, "Yes! You never know, but we are busy and have two different games."Those two different games are one unannounced project and Cyberpunk. CD Projekt Red announced modding tools for The Witcher 2 at the show this week.

  • CD Projekt Red's 'Cyberpunk' inspired by System Shock, Blade Runner [Update]

The Witcher series developer CD Projekt Red is deriving its latest game, Cyberpunk, from the pen-and-paper game of the same name – but that's not where all of its direction is coming from. Cyberpunk draws inspiration from William Gibson novels, Blade Runner, the Ghost in the Shell anime and manga, System Shock and "the first part of Deus Ex," community manager Marcin Momot says.Cyberpunk will remain faithful to its source material, traversing the world but focusing on a specific venue pivotal to the franchise, Night City. Cyberpunk will have an "open, living world" with more customization options than players had with Geralt in The Witcher games. Players will be able to change their stats, equipment, implants and more. The role system comes straight from the pen-and-paper Cyberpunk, and "as opposed to the regular fantasy set-up with mages, warriors and archers, we're going for something different," Momot says. "In Cyberpunk, each character role will offer a set of special skills that will impact your stats in many different ways."Update: Yes, what was first written in the interview as "Shellshock" was supposed to be "System Shock," and CD Projekt Red has altered the text to reflect this. If you don't believe it really said "Shellshock," ctrl+f the comments in the source. We were just as confused as you.

The "Multiplayer Programmer" job being filled by CD Projekt Red shouldn't necessarily be taken as evidence of multiplayer, CDP marketing head Michal Platkow-Gilewski told Eurogamer. "We want to bring to the team someone experienced in this field to evaluate our concepts and ideas," he said. "He will be one of backbone elements of our R&D."Platkow-Gilewski said the multiplayer programmer is part of CDP's desire to "explore all possible directions, check what would be cool, what's feasible and - always the most important for us - what suits our games the best."In other words, the multiplayer programmer is there to help CD Projekt Red determine whether multiplayer would work in any upcoming games. We hope, for the sake of the person hired for that position, that it ends up working in at least one.

A job listing for a Multiplayer Programmer over on CD Projekt Red's official site implies that at least one both of the developer's upcoming RPGs (one cyberpunk, the other dark fantasy) may support multiplayer in some capacity or another. The person hired, in addition to be gaining health care, 26 days of annual paid vacation and relocation assistance to Warsaw, will also be responsible for designing and implementing networking and multiplayer capabilities into CD Projekt Red's proprietary Red Engine, which powers both of its upcoming games. The first to be announced thus far is Cyberpunk, a nonlinear game based on the pen-and-paper RPG of the same name.

CD Projekt Red, developer of the Witcher series, is looking into the fictional future for its next game, announcing development of a new "triple-A" game based on the Cyberpunk pen-and-paper game by Mike Pondsmith. Players will build a character from a series of classes including mercenaries or the cyberpunk-standard "hacker," load that character up with tech implants, and work through a non-linear storyline.A new CDP team, made up of Witcher vets, is working on the game, and staffing up for additional help. There's no release window yet, and it seems early in development, so don't go buy a new video card for it yet.

CD Projekt Red is working on something new in partnership with GOG.com, who had been traditionally much more apt at handling older things. Tomorrow a livestream press conference will reveal a new RPG with a futuristic setting, evidenced by Rayban Charles up there. He's some concept art that CD Projekt Red released to tease tomorrow's stream, which you can catch over on Facebook or at thewitcher.com. And with the stream taking place over on the latter, that blip about The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf from earlier today seems like another candidate for an announcement tomorrow. The plot thickens. The livestream takes place tomorrow at 1pm ET. To see the rest of Rayban's centerfold, you'll need to grab the hoverboard and cruise past the break.

Over three years since its initial cancellation, it looks like The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf may be rising again. The game has been spotted in Danish retail listings, specifically a PS3 listing at CoolShop and both PS3 and Xbox listings at Blockbuster. Neither site has a release date listed, though each advises eager fans to place pre-orders now. (If you're looking for a deal, go with CoolShop to save a cool 100 krone.)Witcher fans will remember Rise of the White Wolf as the console-specific version of CD Projekt's first Witcher game. It was slated to feature completely reworked controls for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though the project was canceled in April of 2009. At the time, developer Widescreen Games complained of missed payments, while publisher CD Projekt claimed that all milestone payments had been made to Widescreen.CD Projekt Red's Summer Conference is slated to take place tomorrow, and promises a major announcement. That announcement, however, will not be Rise of the White Wolf, reports Eurogamer. CD Projekt told the site that it will instead be announcing its next RPG, which was revealed in recent job listings. That said, the company does have some Witcher-related "surprises" planned for this year and next year.

CD Projekt Red, the makers of The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, has posted a boat-load of job openings for an unannounced "RPG in a brand new setting" over on its official blog. "We're looking for people who would rather work on an entirely new and different IP," reads the listing, "a vast RPG for which we want to assemble the best possible staff. It represents an opportunity for you to create a grand new project from the ground up!"The listing also makes reference to the developer's existing "mature dark-fantasy world," distinguishing this new project as likely separate from The Witcher (at least in location), and as one for those who "can't stomach dwarves, elves or sorceresses who put their ample charms on display in Playboy magazine."If you're an artist, programmer or designer looking for work in Poland, give it a shot! There's never any harm in trying. Well, unless you're trying to teach synchronized swimming to an uncooperative bear – there's probably a lot of harm in that.

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has always been a console game in disguise. The PC version remains superior, capable of more clarity and sophisticated effects, but plug in a controller and the Riveting Polish Game transforms into something you'd rather play ensconced in a couch. The "Enhanced Edition" feels authentic and comfortable on the Xbox 360. That isn't to say it's been streamlined to a fault. The Witcher 2 is a gorgeous, thoughtful and brassy adventure with a surprising number of sharp edges. The original game had a deadly gauntlet for a tutorial, a misstep which got it lambasted while a dragon roasted players again and again. It was frustrating, yes, but it worked as a charming wake-up call of sorts, and as a crucial component of the game's mature personality. To succeed, you must think and do as Geralt of Rivia does, and that's precisely what you want in a role-playing game.%Gallery-145685%

Geralt of Rivia ventures to the Xbox 360 next week, with a refined experience of the adventure that debuted on PCs last year. The horrifically painful-to-play opening act of the game, which was a stumbling block for so many, has been tweaked for accessibility and to get players involved in one of the best RPGs in recent memory. Here's the launch trailer before next week's Xbox 360 debut.
