City of Heroes players, we hope you're ready for a flashback because the game's new Retro Sci-fi costume pieces are full of old-school goodness right out of yesteryear's sci-fi classics. Ray-guns, jetpacks, and shiny suits with rings on them are all present in the new costume pieces that were initially conceived with fan input at last year's City of Heroes fan summit. The folks at PC Gamer had the chance to sit down with Paragon Studios' Eric Johnsen to talk a bit about the new additions. Johnsen talks briefly about the creation of the costume set's conception at the fan summit and the process of taking those ideas and turning them into full, in-game costume pieces. If you want to know anything about the design process of the Retro Sci-fi set or about the most recent fan-designed costume set and its release, head on over to the full article and give it a read.

If you weren't in California over the past weekend, you sadly had to miss out on the City of Heroes player summit. That means no voice in the several panels during which the doors were thrown open for new suggestions. But you can at least read through the summary of the weekend's events to find out what nifty new elements will be coming to the game in the near future, including four new powersets and several new costumes. While there's not a firm launch schedule, players can look forward to Water Blast (exactly what it says on the tin), Natural Affinity (healing over time and debuffing), Symbiotic Armor (a new defensive set based around absorbing damage types), and Radiation Armor (again, what it says on the tin). Players can also look forward to another Super Pack as well as the upcoming Retro Sci-Fi costumes and a Cyberpunk set. There's a lot of interesting tidbits, so if you want to get excited about the future, best to read through the event summary at OnRPG.

It was the flying Scrapper on Virtue with a mask! The masses have spoken. For this leg of our Choose My Adventure journey, we will be parking ourselves in Paragon City, fighting the forces of evil, destruction, and movement keys! I must concede that Bree certainly knew her City of Heroes community -- ya'll voted just how she said you would. But Bree, you didn't predict the mask, now did ya?! Ha! It recently came to my attention that I could have easily queried you on the spandex issue, but come on -- what superhero doesn't have to shimmy into that painted-on suit? We want the full experience, right? Right. So let's get to it. All we have left to do to get this show off the road and into some action is whip up a character. But this is me we are talking about here! Thankfully, I am marching into this process armed with your decisions! I mean, how bad can it be? We have three days between close of the last vote and a new set of new ones, so it isn't like there isn't time. Here goes...

In addition to the plethora of new klassic kostumes coming to the male ninjas of Earthrealm and Outworld, two costume-deprived female ninjas are also set to receive additional warrior wardrobe options in the Vita version of Mortal Kombat. In addition to her console outfits, Mileena will be fitted with her leotard getup from Mortal Kombat 2. Skarlet, on the other hand, will receive both Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 outfits, as well as what appears to be an additional alternative costume. Meanwhile, Kitana and Jade have been decked out in old-school digs for months and therefore do not receive new fashion.

Avengers, assemble! In Super Hero Squad Online, that is. The fine folks at Gazillion Entertainment announced today that in order to celebrate the upcoming release of the much-anticipated Avengers film, the latest update to the free-to-play title will allow players to assemble the original Avengers team thanks to the introduction of Ant-Man and a new World-War-II-era costume for Captain America. As comic aficionados know, the original Avengers team (unlike the team featured in the upcoming film) consisted of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and Wasp. Now that Ant-Man has joined the fray, the entire roster of original Avengers characters is now available in SHSO, and not a second too soon. The mischievous trickster-god Loki is back in business, and it's up to players to protect Baxter Plaza and the fallen remains of Asgard from his destructive antics. So what are you waiting for? Assemble your team and get to work; humanity is depending on you, heroes. [Source: Gazillion Entertainment press release]

  • Mortal Kombat Vita to include exclusive klassic kostumes

In addition to having all of the original content from the console version and its character DLC, the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat will include a plethora of klassic costumes exclusive to the little handheld that could. The additional costumes include Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 versions of Ermac, Noob, Rain, Reptile, Smoke, (Unmasked) Sub-Zero and Scorpion. There's also a new alternate costume for Kenshi, as well as Mortal Kombat 2 versions of Ermac, Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Sadly, no new outfits for the female ninjas or any of the non-ninja contingency, but we can't find fault in adding any amount of variety to a year-old game, even if Ermac wasn't actually ever in MK2.

So, remember how SoulCalibur 5 is getting monthly costume DLC starting next month, and how we were absolutely positive it wouldn't be what we were expecting? Well, turns out this first pack is actually exactly what we expected, in that it's mostly random goofiness and fanservice. The new array of costumes will be available for purchase through the "Cepheus Store," which will presumably be added during the game's March 21 system/balance update. The store is divided into categories, the ones listed in the video being "Classic Headgears," "SCV Character Equipment," "Maid Costumes," "Active Wear," Ancient Armor" and "Modern Costumes."No word yet on pricing, or whether the costumes will be sold as complete outfits or individual pieces. The above trailer also teases costumes and accessories coming in future updates, which appear to include fishing regalia, flight attendant outfits, the equipment needed to make King from Tekken, and ... a Pac Man head?

Konami's making sure NeverDead lives up to its name with the first downloadable content pack, available on February 21. "NeverDead Expansion Pack Volume 1" will let you try a new playable character and play co-op challenges with pop star Nikki Summerfield. The pack will also let you visit an expanded version of the Asylum level, with three new challenges, including taking hold of "score zones," racing across the map through a series of traps and hazards, and a mode called Onslaught, in which you unlock the zone section-by-section by defeating enemies. The expansion will also give segmented hero Bryce Boltzmann two new costumes to dress up in, and you can see some shots of the content in the gallery below. Our NeverDead review called Summerfield a "whiny pop singer," but hey, maybe spending a little more time with her will make you see her in a whole new light.%Gallery-146738%

To celebrate the upcoming release of Allods Online's patch 3.0, gPotato is giving away prizes to players who log in on the days leading up to and following the patch. The event starts on February 7th and will run until February 21st, with the patch arriving in the middle on February 14th. Players who log in for a full hour each day during the event will receive progressively valuable rewards, with the best reward saved for those who log in for an hour during all 14 days. Prizes start with special coins for the first day and rapidly ramp up to consumables and costumes, with a Sinister Lion mount for players who log in during all 14 days. To qualify each day, one hour must be spent playing the game before midnight by your server's clock; the time can be split across multiple characters on your account and the prizes are limited to one set per account. gPotato requests that all players entering the contest log out before midnight each day as staying logged in may make you ineligible for that day. As this is a tiered event, players who miss even a single day will never be able to get the top prize of a Sinister Lion mount. For a full list of prizes and contest terms, head over to the official contest announcement.

It's the most wonderful time of the year in Tyria because Wintersday 2011 has begun. And there's certainly no shortage of events for Guild Wars players looking to get into the Wintersday spirit. Lion's Arch, Kamadan, Ascalon City, and the Eye of the North will all provide players with holiday quests, while more pugnacious revelers can get into the spirit of the season with 8v8 snowball tournaments. As usual, players can take part in the annual Grenth vs. Dwayna holiday event in order to receive a spiffy Wintersday mask, and two new costumes are also available for purchase in the NCsoft store. The new costume sets, known as Augur of Kormir and Vision of Lyssa, are available for $6.99 US each. Players can also buy them as a bundle for the discounted price of $9.99 US, or they can shell out $29.99 US for the Limited Edition Pantheon Pack, which includes six deity-themed costumes. But act quickly! The limited edition pack is available only until January 16th. For the full details, head on over to Guild Wars' official Wintersday site. [Thanks to Tanek for the correction!]

  • Newest Ask Cryptic for Champions Online covers the flames of fashion

There are many components to making a great superhero game, but one of the key elements is ensuring that players can be astonishingly good-looking. So it's no surprise that the latest installment of Ask Cryptic sees several questions from Champions Online players about current, upcoming, and conceptual costume sets. That includes promises of more beast-oriented sets and a hard look at any powersets with major clipping issues (although minor clipping issues for certain poses are to be expected). Equally interesting to players will be the promise that the staff is hard at work trying to give players more options for power emanation points, such as staves or wands for magical characters. While some of the answers given will be seen as a bit disappointing, such as the fact that tattoos and scars will not be usable outside of the chest pieces already featuring them, overall the answers promise all sorts of ways for players to look as good as possible while fighting crime.

  • City of Heroes aims at accessorizing with the new Gunslinger Set

Do you find yourself frequently dealing in lead in City of Heroes? Then perhaps your hero could use the accoutrements to match his or her habit of solving every problem with gunplay. The Gunslinger Set is a new featured item in the market, and it brings with it the usual assortment of costume pieces for making your perfect Western-themed hero, including a fine selection of new firearms for any would-be gunslinger looking to snipe at some criminals. The whole package is available for 400 points in the store, but if you'd rather buy items piecemeal the option remains as always. And if you've mostly been kept away from the game's subscription fee by the lack of proper gunslinging attire, you'll be happy to know that the game is also offering players a special subscription deal through the end of December, giving players extra VIP subscription time when purchasing a membership for six months or a year at a time.

Just like any relationship, the one between player and game can grow stale after a while. Eventually the fire dies down, even with a title as good looking and engaging as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and a little extra something may be required to bring back that spark. As it turns out, the key to reigniting that passion is, just like any relationship, costumes. Separated into (loosely) themed packs of 4 to 5 characters, UMvC3's Costume DLC will be gradually released between November 22 and February 21 at $4.00 (320 MSP) a pop. A "Value Pack" containing all 48 outfits will drop on March 6 at $20.00 (1,600 MSP) for the extremely patient fighters out there; everyone else should peep the gallery below, and hop past the break for a complete character/pack configuration breakdown.%Gallery-139921%

    11.13.2011

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 may be out in less than 48 hours, but that doesn't mean you can't cancel your existing pre-order and re-pre-order somewhere else in order to snag one of the exclusive costume packs Capcom detailed on Capcom Unity last Friday. People willing to pre-order from Gamestop will receive the Femme Fatale pack, which provides protective and/or provocative outfits for Morrigan, Chun Li, Storm and X-23. Amazon pre-orders grant the New Age of Heroes pack, which reskins Strider, Sentinel and Doctor Doom in their classic garb, while transforming Akuma into Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter's Cyber Akuma. Best Buy patrons will receive the Villains pack, which includes an Elvis MODOK, as well as less confusing alternates for Wesker, C. Viper and Super Skrull. Capcom also announced two new skins for vanilla MvC3's DLC characters Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorrath, which will be automatically included with new purchases, as well as made available to those who purchased the characters in MvC3. Jump past the break for galleries of each costume pack, and remember to choose wisely. No pre-order bonus is worth buying multiple copies of a game, no matter how unbuttoned Morrigan's shirt is.
