The Lord of the Rings universe just keeps on expanding. Even though the original blockbuster trilogy finished up 16 years ago, and the subsequent Hobbit films sort of bombed, entertainment giants think there's still mileage in the franchise. Amazon has announced a forthcoming TV series, and now Daedalic has revealed it's working on a new game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

Aer is more gorgeous every time I see it. I first ran across it by accident: While waiting in a line at Gamescom 2013, I noticed Robin Hjelte, the game's creator, showing off a video on his tablet to a small, excited crowd. I peeked over his shoulder to see a beautiful pastel landscape with rolling green grass, adorable animals, and, at the center of it all, a young woman -- who suddenly transformed into a bird and soared off the land's edge, aiming for another tranquil island floating high in the sky. I gave Hjelte my card and told him to hit me up if he wanted to talk about the game. The following year at Gamescom, we sat down for a lovely chat. This year at E3, I finally got to play Aer (now with support from renowned German publisher Daedalic Entertainment), and the game sang in my hands as I flawlessly swapped between land and sky, and I wandered through dark, mysterious passageways with even darker secrets. Today, Daedalic and Hjelte's studio, Forgotten Key, released a brand new, infintely more gorgeous trailer for Aer, alongside confirmation that the game is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac and Linux in 2016.

When someone wakes up with a hangover, you'd expect them to hydrate, take aspirin or rest up to get through the day, right? We don't consider selling a friend's engagement ring par for the Regretting Booze course, but apparently Randal does. In Randal's Monday, this choice results in his friend Matt killing himself, leaving Randal cursed to live through the same Monday until he finds a way to fix his mistake. Randal's Monday is a point-and-click adventure game from Daedalic Games and Nexus Game Studios, layered with geek and pop culture references from the past two decades. More than 50 characters will cross paths with Randal in his quest for decency, which is scheduled for a digital release on PCs in Q3 of 2014. [Image: Randal's Monday YouTube channel]

The name alone sets the tone: Gomo. It's an adorable, cartoon-style point-and-click adventure with creepy overtones and a sweet story about a creature and his dog, Dingo, who's been captured by aliens. Gomo comes out on December 6 for PC for £7, published by Daedalic Entertainment and developed by Fishcow Studio. It should be on Steam Greenlight in the near future. And yes, even the aliens are cute in Gomo.

Daedalic Entertainment once told us its fantasy adventure game, The Night of the Rabbit, was a mix of Alice in Wonderland and Doctor Who – a combination that seemed almost too good to be true. Turns out it's entirely true, and the game is now available on Steam for $20, for both PC and Mac. The Night of the Rabbit throws the main character, Jerry, into a world between worlds, populated by talking animals and dark forces, with overarching magical and scientific twists. Daedalic is behind the Edna and Harvey adventure series and the comedy-adventure franchise, Deponia.

  • Report: Ubisoft, Atari, many other publishers requesting payment from German pirates

Someone in Germany -- perhaps even some people -- illegally pirated a copy of Prison Break: The Conspiracy. Hard to believe as it may be, it appears to be the case according to TorrentFreak, who delved into German public records looking for game publishers who have employed German law to track down (and demand money from) people who allegedly pirated various games. In Germany, Koch Media publishes the Prison Break game, and has been demanding settlements of "several hundred Euros" from offending IP addresses. The records indicate that several major publishers, either directly or through subsidiaries/secondary parties, have been sending out letters to German citizens requesting varying levels of payment in return for not being sued. Where things get murky, however, is how the publishers are seeking out the accused pirates, using not always reliable "IP address-only evidence" -- easily circumvented with proxy domains and such. You know, hacker stuff. TorrentFreak's report indicates that a variety of publishers and distributors are involved, including (but not limited to): Atari, Koch Media (representing Techland's Dead Island and Prison Break, and Eidos/Square Enix's Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well as Dungeon Siege 3 and various Final Fantasy titles), Daedalic Entertainment (representing LucasArts), Codemasters, BitComposer, Ubisoft, Kalypso Media, dtp entertainment, and Aerosoft. It is currently unclear how many settlement notices have been sent out by each company, or if any will continue doing so after these actions have been brought to light. Witcher 2 developer CD Projekt Red was recently pursuing similar cases in Germany until it announced the end of the practice last week.

  • A New Beginning for environmental adventure games

Daedalic Entertainment, the German publisher of adventure games like Ankh, is developing a new adventure game for the PC, Wii, and DS with a preachy twist. A New Beginning is being billed as an "eco-thriller" in which the player, as five teenagers with elemental rings a scientist and a time traveler, is responsible for stopping an "impending global climate cataclysm."Remarkably, A New Beginning uses hand-drawn 2D art and animation. We'll hopefully find out how it looks when Daedalic debuts the game at the Games Convention in Leipzig.[Via Game|Life]
