This week, there is a lot of Xbox 360 new game release deals. So much so, that we'll forgo an overly long intro and just get right to it. So ... Best Buy is giving out a free beanie hat with purchase of Guitar Hero World Tour, selling Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway for $40 and offering Blitz II for $50. Target stores only have one good deal and that's a free $25 gift card with purchase of an Xbox 360 Arcade console. Circuit City is dishing out the gift cards (as has become the norm), giving away a free $10 gift card with purchase of Fable II, Golden Axe, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Saints Row 2, and Hell's Highway. You can score a free $10 gift card and mini strategy guide with purchase of Fallout 3 (CE), a free $15 iTunes gift card with purchase of Guitar Hero World Tour and a free t-shirt with Legendary. Phew ... happy shopping!

A few years ago the gauge for graphical fidelity was how good water looked in engine. Today, it's all about fire. Alone in the Dark, Call of Duty: World at War, Gears of War 2 and now Far Cry 2 all show off its flash by igniting the world in flames. We were able to hit the classy Yorkville area of Toronto, Canada, to launch of Far Cry 2. While we've played around with the map editor and fired a few rounds at other events the launch party was special because we were able to play the entire game projected onto a movie theater screen. Oh boy. Not only are there eight new games hitting the Xbox 360 this weeks (and Portal on XBLA, lest we forget), but several of them look to be good games. Heavy hitters like Far Cry 2 and Fable II undoubtedly top the list, but there are some other big names in there as well. Check 'em out: Fable 2 Midnight Club: Los Angeles Far Cry 2 Disney Sing It Spider-Man: Web of Shadows The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Dance Dance Revolution: Universe 3 Legendary Now, the question is are there any "must have" games on this list for you, or are you strategically withholding your funds for something else?[Via Joystiq]

  • Visit Africa in Home beta's Far Cry 2 space

While sucking down virtual oxygen in Home's over-ripe extended closed beta, players may notice a new addition to the neighborhood in the form of a space dedicated to Far Cry 2's African landscape. Highlights include a dilapidated train station, information about the forthcoming shooter's warring factions and a multiplayer game of Mancala (complete with bullets used as playing pieces). What more could we ask for? How about an interactive map for those who want to plan their attack ahead of the game's release this Tuesday. Yep, it's got that too. However, if the latest rumors are to be believed, most may have to wait until mid-November to see it for themselves.

Even though the release list for this week is painfully long (for our wallets, at least), we can't help but feel that something is missing ... Nevermind. When you see this week's releases you'll have no trouble putting the week-long delay of LittleBigPlanet at the back of your mind. There are literally too many to choose from -- and this is just one week's worth of games. Here's the full release list:US Games Rock Band 2 [Special Edition] Midnight Club: Los Angeles Disney Sing It Eternal Sonata The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon BioShock Far Cry 2 Spider Man: Web of Shadows EU Games Far Cry 2 (Collector's Edition available at GAME) Dead Space MotoGP 08 Midnight Club: Los Angeles Spider Man: Web of Shadows Monopoly Blitz The League II Asian Games NBA Live 09 Release dates are constantly subject to change, so be sure to check with your local store if you're uncertain. Also, feel free to import your games from other regions -- your PS3 loves exotic food. But keep in mind that DLC always needs to be purchased from the corresponding region. So if you have a US copy of Rock Band 2 you're going to be buying your tracks from the US PSN Store.

Ubisoft really loves Home. Not only did they host their "Ubidays" press event in the virtual space, but now a new game space for Far Cry 2 has been added. The weird thing? Home isn't even released yet. Still, those of you in the beta (which seems to be a greater number every day, recently) will be able to access this game space starting now.But what is it? The Far Cry 2 Home space includes mock-ups of in-game levels for you to explore. Within one of these spaces (seen in the image above) you'll be able to play with an interactive map of the Far Cry 2 world as well as learning more about the background story of the game from images and text articles. There's also a multiplayer minigame to play with your Home buddies. The PlayStation Blog post ends with a promise to update the game space regularly, so keep an eye out for developments in the future. Not bad for free, right? Imagine a Home populated with dozens of such game spaces. Doesn't seem quite so boring now, does it? Check out the PlayStation Blog post for more info and screenshots.

Want to build a pyramid from scratch and duke it out with your friends while making your way across the desert? Think building a few serpent rock sculptures would add a nice touch to your multiplayer deathmatch? Well, those examples and anything your creative mind can conjure are all possible using the Far Cry 2 map editor. Yes, the same map editor that made us "oo" and "ah" this past August. Watch Ubisoft's latest map editor trailer and witness its unmatched awesomeness.

Time for 0.2 percent of you to form an "online PR cabal" again? Perhaps. Ubisoft forum manager "bukowski113" has posted details about the Far Cry 2 DRM, which happens to be the same SecuROM technology tied to Spore and other EA PC (and sometimes Mac) titles. According to bukowski113: Purchasers have up to 5 activations on 3 separate PCs Uninstalling Far Cry 2 "refunds" an activation; this process is known as "revoke" (as long as you properly uninstall the game, you'll be able to re-install it an unlimited number of times on the 3 machines) A computer can be upgraded an unlimited number of times (using "revoke") Ubisoft is willing to provide additional activations, if necessary "Ubisoft is committed to the long-term support of our games: you'll always be able to play Far Cry 2" Welcome to "the future of DRM," people. Get comfy.[Via Shacknews]

GameTrailers has five new videos of Far Cry 2 gameplay, all of which can be found after the break, with each showing off a different time of day in the game's African setting. There's really not much more we can say about the title prior to its Oct. 21 release, but from what we've experienced so far we hope it doesn't get totally lost in the midst of release neighbors: Fable 2, Fallout 3 and LittleBigPlanet.

Achievement lovers gather 'round, we have some freshly new achievements to share that are solely related to Far Cry 2 and Spider-man: Web of Shadows. Intrigued? If so, you can click your way to the complete list of achievements via the links below, but be warned. The Spider-man achievements are yawn inducing and Far Cry 2's are, well, aren't all that bad. • Far Cry 2 dev diary goes to Africa

Okay, forget the Halo 3 ViDocs. Forget the Too Human Goblin Man of Norway. We're prepared to call the first installment of the Far Cry 2 developer diary the best developer diary ever. It's not every day that a development team -- in this case Ubisoft Montreal -- travels to Kenya for research. The first in a series of developer diaries about the trip, this video covers the events leading up to departure. Even preparing for the trip sounds like it was quite an ordeal. In addition to briefings about what to expect (wild animals, corruption, etc.), each member was given over a dozen shots to prepare them for the possibility of disease. Risking malaria to make sure you get those tree bark textures just right? That's dedication.

  • Ubisoft to add subtitles to in-house games

Ubisoft has announced (in text format on gamesindustry.biz, appropriately enough) that it plans to begin supporting subtitles to its internally developed games, beginning with Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, and Shaun White Snowboarding. The addition is being made in order to make the company's games more accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing. According to Ubisoft, this will require modifications to game engines already in use and also "inclusion of subtitles in the conception phase of game development."Frankly, we can't live without subtitles (some people have to sleep at night, after all) and we're surprised that Ubisoft iis only now catching on to their necessity for many gamers. Still, it's a good move and we're sure many gamers will be happier as a result.[Via Joystiq]

Recently, over on the official Far Cry 2 blog, Ubisoft made the announcement that Far Cry 2 (and it's jaw dropping map editor) will release to stores on October 23rd. In the same post, Ubisoft answers a few questions regarding the map editor including a description of the map sharing system and how the map rating system will work. Ubisoft sent out a press release this morning confirming that Far Cry 2 will hit European retail shelves on October 24th. The company also announced a collector's edition, which comes in a wooden box. The fine wooden case, sure to be made from only the finest trees (not really), will deliver the game, t-shirt, art book, collector's map and "making-of" DVD.We're still waiting to hear back officially from Ubisoft if North America should plan on getting the game on October 21st, which is what many retailers are currently showing as the release date. Update: GameSpot confirms the date is the 21st.

  • Into Africa: Far Cry 2 dev talks about, shows immersion

It seems that even Ubisoft wants to know what an average day is like for our very own Ludwig Kietzmann. Is life in Africa really as crazy as he makes it out to be? Clint Hocking and his team have dedicated themselves to finding that out. They are going to great lengths to put players into Ludwig's shoes via a variety of immersion-enhancing elements in Far Cry 2, which Clint himself talks about in a brand-new video after the break. As an added bonus, we've included a new, all-gameplay video of Sony's Afrika (Hakuna Matata outside of Japan) after the break as well, since Ludwig assures us that this game is also highly representative of his daily routine.

  • Far Cry 2 trailer talks player immersion

The for Far Cry 2 has us wondering just how immersive we want our games to be. In the video above, Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking explains that the player avatar in Far Cry 2 does everything. In other words, the player avatar physically performs every action in the game. There is no magic healing when you pass over a med kit. The camera doesn't simply teleport into a car when you enter it. Every action is accompanied by an animation, whether it be fixing a jammed weapon or (sickeningly) fixing a dislocated joint (seriously, it's gross). Speaking of jammed weapons, Hocking notes that all of the game's weapons and vehicles degrade over time. As guns are used they begin to accumulate dirt and rust and eventually they will simply break in a player's hands. Likewise, vehicles will break down, requiring players to hop out and work on the engine before continuing. The only question we have now is whether or not players will have to hunt down an in-game Porta-Potty every few hours.

  • Far Cry 3 probably sticking with African setting

    08.27.2008

Far Cry 2's Narrative Designer Patrick Redding informs VG247 that Ubisoft Montreal has started work on the next Far Cry game. He tells the site that Africa still has a "huge amount of promise" and there are still things they'd like to do with the setting, but he hedges it all by saying that the team is still in "preliminary stages" of development.Redding expresses that the Far Cry 2 engine could be used to make other locales, but that to save time the team will probably build on the sequel's African setting. He wants to stick with the series' exotic settings, but feels that jungle islands aren't as exciting as when the original Far Cry released four years ago.

Download to PSP Ubisoft made quite an impression with its latest console footage of Far Cry 2. While we'd like to say that it's simply the gameplay that caught our attention, we'll admit that this is purely for the eye candy. We're impressed to see that the console version looks just as good as the PC. Word to Ubisoft, though: can we please have a little bit of color into this unusually bleak representation of Africa?%Gallery-30357%
