Now playing on your local internet browser, this Far Cry 2 tech demo showcases the technology behind Ubi Soft's second entry into the Far Cry universe. Based on the initial videos we've seen the game looks great, and it's good to see Ubi Soft Montreal trumpetting their graphical horn considering Crytek is no longer involved with the franchise. We wondered what took Ubi Soft so long to go back to the Far Cry well again, but then we remembered they must want to release it alongside the upcoming blockbuster film adaptation. [Thanks, Chris]

  • Far Cry 2 is an impressively nice fit for PS3

Many game developers have found the PS3 hardware difficult to work with ... intimidating even. Ubisoft Montreal, developer of Far Cry 2, was no exception and had some worries about developing for the PS3 in the past; however, those uncertain feelings have apparently been dispelled, according to a recent interview with tech director Dominic Guay. Guay had a lot of positive things to say, calling the raw processing power of the PS3 'impressive' and the hardware architecture a 'nice fit' for their technical designs. He appraises Blu-ray and the PS3's hard drive saying they're ideal for Far Cry 2's continuously streaming open world. The only downside is that the PS3 can't compare to some higher end PC resolutions due to memory size differences, but "it's not a big deal" says Guay. With the PS3 out for more than a year now, and developer kits out way longer than that, developers have had a lot of time getting to know the hardware they'll be developing for in the next few years. If this is a sign for anything, it must mean that we'll be hearing more and more positive comments like Dominic Guay's in the near future.

  • Far Cry 2 teaser debuts Dunia Engine

Much like Crytek began Crysis marketing with sweeping views of a tropical island jungle powered by CryENGINE2, Ubisoft has used this Far Cry 2 teaser to throw a coming out party for its "Dunia" game engine. We see romanticized views of anywhere Africa through a hazy film filter with little indication of actual gameplay, save for the obvious metaphor of brushfire – oh yes, there will be blood.Once you're done gazing at the virtual safari, considering checking out MTV's chat with Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking for some real insight into the FPS-cum-male weepy. "Yes, it's a shooter where you run around and machine-gun a bunch of people. But there are real characters in here who I hope you're going to develop a real relationship with," hopes Hocking.

Ubisoft has released the first official teaser for Far Cry 2, entitled "Mwanzo." The teaser looks to be explicitly aimed at showing of the new Dunia engine built for the game, and we must say it does an admirable job. Sporting grass and trees that wave in the wind, realistic wildlife, and a detailed village, Far Cry 2 is looking very nice indeed. Unfortunately, being the teaser that it is, the video doesn't give us too much more to work with. For instance, the video is done in the style of a film reel, so the colors aren't as vibrant as they should be. Also, there are no humans in sight, so we'll have to hold judgment on actual character models. Next stop: gameplay (we hope).

  • Far Cry 2 announced for 360

Well we never saw this coming. Oh, no, not by a long shot. Never in a million years did we think that ... oh, forget it. Of course, we all pretty much figured Far Cry 2 would be releasing on the Xbox 360. Considering a full three iterations of the franchise have appeared on one Xbox platform or another, it was pretty much a certainty. We do have an official announcement of the game from Ubisoft now, though, and that always makes us feel warm and fuzzy. It is interesting to hear that it is in fact just Far Cry 2 and not Far Cry 2: Bestial Rage or something, so we're assuming this is the same game that will appear on PC in Ubisoft's fiscal 08-09 (sometime between April 2008 and March 2009). • No more tears: Far Cry 2 going to PS3

Previously announced exclusively for PC, Ubisoft has just revealed that Far Cry 2 is also being developed for Xbox 360 and PS3. (Could it be the poor sales of Crytek's much anticipated PC-only Crysis?) Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, this FPS has you running and gunning through the wild fields of Afrika Africa. Ubisoft is touting its custom-made video game engine, and as seen from this old off-screen PC footage, it looks pretty good (albeit familiar). According to the press release, "Far Cry 2 is scheduled to ship fiscal 2008–2009." That's a pretty vague and unhelpful release schedule. For more info on the game, you may want to check out the next issue of Official PlayStation Magazine. They're totally going to crack the game open. We're glad to see yet another good looking FPS head to the PS3, but we're still more interested in what the talented guys at Crytek might be cooking up ...

Similar to spotting a remote outpost far off in the African savanna, we could've spotted this announcement ... oh, nearly six months ago when they first announced the game. Nevertheless, Le Ubisoft today announced that their upcoming FPS, Far Cry 2 – full of all sorts of procedurally generated goodies – will be coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles as well as the originally targeted PC platform. When we spoke with Ubisoft Montreal's creative director, the lovely and talented Clint Hocking, about the possibility of console ports at PAX, he told us, "Our mandate ... was to make Ubisoft a top-tier PC game. That's my mandate, that's what I'm doing. It's obviously Ubisoft's business if they want to do a console version." He elaborated, "The engine is not alien to a console environment just because we have the expertise." So now, Ubi is taking advantage of said expertise to bring the game to consoles. While it's unclear if all three versions will ship simultaneously, the console ports will also ship in Ubi's 08-09 fiscal year, which runs April through March. %Gallery-6687%
