  • Joystiq Discussions: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and the deliceous typo

Everyone makes mistakes. Chances are that in the process of writing this I've misspelled a word, mucked up my punctuation or grammar, at least once. Language is a tricky beast, make no mistake! The beauty of publishing on the Internet, though, is that typos can be repaired the moment they're spotted. If you print something and send it out into the world, especially on a physical product that stands to sell hundreds of thousands of copies, there's no fixing that sucker. So you'd think Square-Enix's production team would at some point in the proofing process catch a juicy one like "inlcudes" on the cover of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. On the one hand, mistakes like these indicate a level of disinterest. "Oh, who cares what the cover says! No one's going to pay attention," say the phantom production managers in the diehard fan's brain. Than again, it's fun! I personally love a good wacky game package, though. A certain Resident Evil for Nintendo 3DS will never, ever leave my library thanks to its hilarious spine. Sometimes the flubs aren't even typos. Okami on Wii had star Amaterasu on the cover, but it also had an IGN watermark on it. Capcom didn't even use its own art to make that cover! Do you dig having these oddities in your library? Take the poll, discuss in the comments. Those sweet typos, yay or nay? [Images: Square-Enix]

It's not exactly red-nosed, but we'd say Japan's new PS4 glows. The red-and-black system is coming to the country on March 19, 2015 alongside HD-ified action-RPG Final Fantasy Type 0. Sony unveiled the new livery over the weekend, and today it became available for pre-order in limited quantities. The asking price is 46,980 yen (around $392) plus tax, and for that you get the special system, a matching DualShock 4 and 15 days of PS Plus. It also comes with codes for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, the Episode Duscae demo of FF 15 and a unique PS4 theme.

Relations can get a bit dramatic between Final Fantasy Type-0 HD's 12-pack of young heroes known as Class Zero, and those flare-ups work well for the above propaganda clip for a dominant Empire. Previously limited to PSPs in Japan, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is coming to PS4 and Xbox One in North America on March 17, 2015, and Europe on March 20. It's priced $60 for the consoles, and as an extra incentive Square Enix is bundling in vouchers for the upcoming FF15 demo. A new trailer - which you'll find below the break - showcases the visual leap from PSP to 1080p on current-gen hardware, while also providing a idea of what to expect from the fast-paced, mission-based action-RPG. While there are recognizable FF themes of magic mixed with sci-fi and a beautiful but war-torn world, the way you control, fight and explore using students from the Class 0 military academy isn't as familiar.

  • Final Fantasy Type-0 launching within the next year

Final Fantasy Type-0 is expected to launch within the next year, Square Enix confirmed to Joystiq during a hands-off demo of the game at PAX Prime. The HD port of the Japan-only PSP game is a "speedy, action-oriented" spin on the series' formula, featuring real-time battles with 14 playable characters, three of which were shown in the demo. "We probably wouldn't age another year until it's released," the game's director Hajime Tabata said. Type-0's move to PS4 and Xbox One was announced at E3 in June. Tabata stressed that Final Fantasy Type-0 is approaching a more mature tone in comparison to other games in the series, including magic and special abilities acting as "devastating attacks" that can cause enemies to burn to death, for example. Additionally, much of the feedback Square Enix received after launching the game in Japan revolved around its steep difficulty. To alleviate those concerns, the developer implemented four difficulty modes and tuned the combat balance so the HD port "makes sense for the big screen," Tabata explained.

  • Square Enix squashes Final Fantasy Type-0 fan translation

Publisher Square Enix has issued a cease and desist order to a romhacker calling his or herself "Sky," effectively ending work on an English-language patch for the PSP's Japan-exclusive Final Fantasy Type-0. "Unfortunately I'm forced to remove my posts and pages related to the popular Final Fantasy Type-0 fan translation project," Sky wrote in a recent blog update. "That's right, certain game company thinks that threats and false accusations are the way to treat its biggest fans." Despite Sky's outrage, this move should come as no surprise. Square Enix recently revealed plans to launch Final Fantasy Type-0 in the West on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A free patch for a PSP game solely available to importers and software pirates would hinder sales of the new-generation game, which will undoubtedly be a more lucrative release for the publisher than its original incarnation. Final Fantasy Type-0 is heading west for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Square Enix announced today. The PS4 version is confirmed for a North American launch, and Director Hajime Tabata notes both Xbox One and PS4 versions in a trailer. Xbox One and PS4 versions are confirmed in a European press release. Type-0 originally launched on PSP in Japan in 2011. Final Fantasy Agito, the free iOS and Android game set in the same world as Type-0, is also on its way to North America and Europe. "The voice of our Western fans was instrumental in the development of Final Fantasy Type-0, and we're very excited to release this title soon," Director Hajime Tabata said in the release. "The new PlayStation 4 system and Xbox One platforms have really helped to re-envision this dynamic and turbulent world of Orience." [Image: Square Enix]

Square Enix's "Fabula Nova Crystallis" returns from the abyss, once again, with the company's recent trademark registration of Final Fantasy Agito. Gematsu took note of the registration – or re-registration depending on your perspective – of the trademark with the similar name to the game once known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII, which eventually launched in Japan as Final Fantasy Type-0 in 2011 on PSP. Whispers of a western release for Type-0 have been around for two years, but never really went anywhere. All we know for certain is that Square Enix Presents is scheduled for E3 and some Final Fantasy news is planned... because there's always Final Fantasy news planned. Always.

Back in the day, used to be that when a game wasn't released in a certain area, that area never got to experience that game. After a year and a half of being on Japanese store shelves, Final Fantasy Type-O doesn't look like it's getting localized in the US. Luckily, a few fans are up to the immense task of translating the PSP RPG.GBA Temp forum poster SkyBladeCloud has laid bare all his programming work on the Final Fantasy Type-O ROM on the forums, producing the above shaky-cam video of his work so far. He's not necessarily soliciting translators for assistance, but has made it much easier for fan translation to succeed by reverse-engineering a majority of the game engine. Now Japanese-fluent gamers can help make a translation a reality.Final Fantasy Type-O launched on the PSP in Japan in October of 2011, at the tail-end of the PSP's life cycle. Type-O uses a hybrid battle system not unlike Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and The 3rd Birthday – a mixture of turn-based and real-time action combat.

Square Enix's "Fabula Nova Crystallis" world – the occasionally bizarre and often beautiful universe of several Final Fantasy XIII titles – is scheduled for a big exposé as part of Square's 25th anniversary celebration for the Final Fantasy series. A stage presentation on September 1 in Tokyo's Shibuya district titled, "Final Fantasy XIII Lightnight Saga: New Developments Presentation" apparently features "details on the future of the FFXIII project" (via Andriasang's translation).Beyond Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, the Fabula Nova Crystallis series extends to Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (renamed Final Fantasy Type-0). Of the planned "trilogy" of games, the only one yet to see release is Final Fantasy Versus XIII. In fact, nothing has been heard of the title in quite some time – it was a no show both at last year's Tokyo Game Show and this year's E3 Expo. A demo of the next-gen technology supporting Versus, the Luminous Engine, was given at E3, but Versus wasn't part of the presentation.Kotaku's reporting that the game may be in flux or cancelled, though Square Enix reps refused to comment on the status of the title. With any luck, we'll find out more this September.

According to Andriasang, Square's Ultimania guide for Final Fantasy Type-0 includes an interview with director Hajima Tabata, who reportedly reveals that his team is currently working on the international version of the PSP title. This would be the first official confirmation of the game's upcoming arrival in Europe and North America -- though the interview doesn't bring up any details about the timetable for said localizations. Andriasang also reports that the interview contains Tabata's plans for the franchise's future. He reportedly wants to make a direct sequel to the game, titled (what else?) Type-1, and would like to see the next installment on a home console. We've contacted Square for a comment on ... well, everything you just read.

Though much of Final Fantasy Type-0 is still shrouded in abstract mystery, one thing is known for sure: It is more than 12 minutes long. How do we know? Well, that's the length of the trailer above, which, while substantial, doesn't appear to be all-encompassing.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is finally coming out in Japan on October 27, and Square Enix is observing the long-awaited occasion with an absolutely gorgeous collector's edition. This limited release of the PSP game packs a book of postcards and a three-disc soundtrack set, and looks damn good doing it. Here's a bummer: this super pretty set is only going to be available on the Japanese Square Enix e-Store, for ¥12,760. So, there's very little chance of actually encountering one of these in real life. We're addressing this situation by just gazing languidly at this picture, and the others on Andriasang. It'll also be possible to buy the soundtrack and postcards later, if you're the proactive type.

Final Fantasy Type-0 arrives in Japan on October 13, after years and years of waiting -- you might have read about it in history class, under its original name of Final Fantasy Agito XIII. It was first announced as a mobile game in 2006, then officially moved to PSP in 2008, then renamed this year. Now that Square Enix is absolutely certain it's shaken off anyone who might have been paying attention, the publisher is going to release it. In Japan, at least -- no announcements have been made for other territories. But first, it's planned a demo. Starting August 11, Japanese PSP owners (and anyone with a Japanese PSN account, hint hint) can download the demo, titled "Natsubi," which will both introduce players to the content of the action-RPG and unlock special outfits for use in the final game. Even better, unlike the Dissidia Duodecim demo, this one's free. Even better than that, this one's not called "Prologus."

Final Fantasy Type-0 (formerly known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII) will launch in Japan on October 13. Andriasang says the game, which comes on two UMDs, will cost ¥7,700 -- a hike from the regular ¥5,040 for most PSP games. Square Enix also released a new trailer, but to get a better idea of Type-0's fast-paced battles (one of its facets that prompted the change in name) you should check out the 20-minute demonstration. The game currently has no announced launch plans for North America.

    01.18.2011

Early this morning, Square Enix announced that the game formerly known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII would now be called Final Fantasy Type-0 -- possibly as the result of the company-wide syllable shortage caused by the development of Dissidia 012 [Duodecim] Final Fantasy. Along with the new name, the company premiered a new trailer, featuring lots of depressing, epic CG war footage (warning: wounded Chocobo) along with actual gameplay. The rest looks pretty much like it did two years ago, at least in terms of the third-person action-style gameplay; the look seems to have gotten a bit darker. However, this version has something "Agito XIII" never did: a release window (specifically, summer). Update: Square Enix has blocked the trailer from YouTube.

What was to be the PlayStation Portable entry in Square Enix's "Fabula Nova Crystallis" series is now considered a spin-off title with a new name: Final Fantasy Type-0. Director Hajime Tabata resolved the mysterious trademark filings at Square Enix's 1st Production Department event in Japan today, noting that the change from "Final Fantasy Agito XIII" seemed appropriate given how different the more action-oriented design of Type-0 had become from Final Fantasy XIII. Though it will now distance itself from XIII, Type-0 will continue to embrace the PSP -- in fact, when it ships in Japan this Summer, it'll come on two UMDs. According to Siliconera's translation, the doubled storage will accommodate over 30 voiced characters. Judging by earlier trailers, Final Fantasy Type-0 will also feature multiplayer battles. We'll contact Square Enix to learn more about its plans for North America. [Image credit: 4Gamer.net]

We're pretty sure you'd need one of those bulletin boards from TV crime dramas -- you know, the ones with pictures of mafioso higher-ups with multicolored strings and push pins connecting them -- in order to keep track of all of Square Enix's upcoming games. The studio's resident star designer, Tetsuya Nomura, recently gave an update on these projects -- a laundry list which includes Final Fantasy Versus and Agito XIII, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Re:Coded, The 3rd Birthday, and "a number of unannounced titles." According to Andriasang's translation, Nomura explained the dearth of news on Versus XIII was due to a number of hardships which have rendered the company's old developmental tricks "completely inapplicable," but that progress is being made. He couldn't be any more specific than that, due to Square Enix's policy of promoting games in the order they'll be released. In that case, we may not hear more on Versus or Agito for some time -- Nomura explained that some of the company's unannounced games would arrive before the next installment in the Fabula Nova Crystallis franchise. For more info on the fate of Square Enix's future projects, check out Andriasang's translation of the 3rd Birthday Twitter feed.
