European 3DS owners hoping to flip some 3D notes this week will have to wait a bit longer. Flipnote Studio 3D was coming to the continent this week, but Nintendo postponed the animation software's launch in light of "unexpectedly high" uptake in Japan after last week's launch over there. Nintendo of Europe provided us with the following statement: "Nintendo of Europe regrets to announce that Flipnote Studio 3D, originally due for a European launch on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS on 1st August, will be delayed. Due to unexpectedly high levels of user activity since the launch of the application in Japan on 24th July, we decided to postpone our European launch until we can deliver the best possible service to users. We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause, and will announce a new launch date as soon as possible." We've reached out to Nintendo of America to find out if the European delay will impact the North American launch, which remains listed as "early August" on the software's website. When it does launch, the free 3DS successor to Flipnote will bring with the ability to use 3D effects, doodle in six colors - yes, six - and export creations as AVIs and GIFs. And if there's anything the Internet needs, it's more GIFs ... No, we're not joking.

Flipnote Studio 3D, Nintendo's free, three-dimensional animation software for the 3DS, will be available on the North American eShop sometime in "early August," according to the software's newly launched official English website. As is the case with Flipnote Studio 3D's Japanese counterpart, users will be able to export their animations to one of two networks: Flipnote Gallery: Friends and/or Flipnote Gallery: World. Usage of the Friends network is free and allows the user to share their animations with their 3DS buddies, whereas the World network is a paid service accessed by a global community of users. The subscription fee is $0.99 for 30 days of access. Additionally, the app comes with a free 30 trial period, and the World network is freely available every day between 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. local 3DS time. The user can also earn Coin Points and Collector Points by submitting and evaluating Flipnotes, which can lead to free months of playtime if they're awesome enough at either activity.

Flipnote Studio 3D has marked out July 3 for its arrival in Japan. There's no word yet on exact release timing for western eShops, though the free portable doodler was earmarked for the summer in a mini Nintendo Direct (above) released earlier this year. The 3DS successor to Flipnote lets handheld artists create animations with 3D effects, and users can export their works as GIFs and AVIs. Those GIFs and AVIs won't just be in black, red, and blue, as the new Flipnote features a welcome six colors. You'll also be able to show off your kaleidoscopic animations via Friend Flipnote Gallery and World Flipnote Gallery services, although the latter carries a monthly fee. The news comes on the day Flipnote community support is set to end on DSi.

The DSi's beloved animation software Flipnote Studio is finally getting a 3DS version, which is both good news and bad. Flipnote Studio 3D allows users to draw animations with three different layers for a 3D effect, and export them to GIF or AVI. It'll be released in Japan this summer for free, with the ability to upload either to a "Friend Flipnote Gallery" service or a wider "World Flipnote Gallery" that connects you to a global community of artists. That worldwide gallery carries a monthly fee to cover server costs, and comes with a 30 day free trial. That fee may be waived if your animations prove to be popular! Check out more sample animations on the Nintendo Direct site. The bad news: Flipnote community support on the DSi will end May 31.
