ASUS upgrades its crazy ROG liquid-cooled gaming laptop
ROG, ASUS' well-respected gaming PC arm, likes to unveil a barrage of weird systems at Taipei's Computex -- and this year is no different. To start with, its insane liquid-cooled GX700 gaming laptop is coming back for another round. The GX800 still has the giant attachment at the rear, but will now be powered by an NVIDIA SLI GPU, along with Intel's K-series CPU. There are two 330W power supplies to ensure all that liquid-cooled overclocking you'll be doing. Indeed, if you're not planning to overclock, you're probably looking at the wrong gaming machine.
The latest ROG laptop comes with a giant water cooler
ASUS is one of a rare few companies that's both a mainstream PC manufacturer and a respected name among the gaming community. Its ROG (Republic Of Gamers) line is a favorite, with giant laptops like the G751 earning top marks from gamers and reviewers alike. We're looking forward to its replacement, the ROG G752, but first let's talk about the GX700 in the image above. ASUS is only teasing this laptop, but it's going to have an overclockable Intel K-series Skylake processor, the latest graphics from NVIDIA and, a 17-inch 4K display. Oh... and that giant thing you see next to it? That's apparently a water-cooling system. Details are scant, but an educated guess would suggest you'll only be able to overclock the GX700's processor and graphics when you're docked to it. I don't know whether to laugh or take out my wallet.
MSI's GX700 gives way to Intel 965PM and NVIDIA NB8P
It's no secret that CES gave way to a smorgasbord of new kit for us all to drool over, but it seems that MSI showcased two forthcoming technologies that weren't exactly set for public unveiling. NotebookReview happened to take a gander at the innocent looking 17-inch GX700, and in the process of admiring its expansive WSXGA+ display and Core 2 Duo processor, they also noted the strange black line crossing out the Intel 965PM chipset feature, which is supposedly the yet-to-be-disclosed "Crestline" chipset that will support the Santa Rosa (er, Centrino Pro) processor platform. Additionally, the lappie sports a full-size keyboard, dual-layer DVD burner, 4-in-1 card reader, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth, an optional DVB-T tuner, ExpressCard slot, audio in / out, and curiously enough, an NVIDIA NB8P graphics card, which also lacks a formal announcement of its existence. Of course, both of these mysterious components could face naming changes or technical revisions before getting official, but it's fairly safe to assume that we'll be seeing a new chipset / graphics card finding homes in laptops here before too long.[Via Laptoping]
